How do you get Mounjaro from a pharmacy?

You get Mounjaro from a pharmacy by obtaining a prescription first, because it is a prescription-only medicine. Walking in and asking for a pen over the counter will not work at any registered pharmacy. A prescriber must first judge that it is suitable for you.

There are three realistic routes. An NHS prescription is possible for people who meet the NHS criteria, though access is phased. A private prescription from your GP or a private clinic can be taken to a pharmacy that stocks the pen. Or you can use an online pharmacy such as ours, where the consultation, prescribing and dispensing happen in one place.

Not every high-street branch holds Mounjaro in the cupboard, and whether a local branch will dispense a private prescription is the branch's decision. If you want to go in person, phone ahead and ask whether they can supply the strength you need. How does ordering from our pharmacy work?

Ordering takes four steps: payment is taken when you place the order, and if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. The first is a free online consultation: a short health questionnaire with no charge and no obligation.

03 · Who can be prescribed

Who can be prescribed Mounjaro?

Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition. Examples are high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. It must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.¹

A prescriber assesses your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether it suits you. That clinical assessment is why a pharmacy that skips it is a red flag. Mounjaro is also licensed for type 2 diabetes, but it is not suitable for everyone: you should not take it if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, and your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems. Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. If you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly.

Tell the prescriber about every medicine you take, including insulin, sulfonylureas and the contraceptive pill, and about any past stomach, pancreas or gallbladder problems. Complete answers are what make the decision safe, and our prescribing team would rather ask a follow-up question than approve an order that does not fit.

04 · How Mounjaro works

How does Mounjaro work?

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) activates two natural gut-hormone receptors at once, GIP and GLP-1. Together they help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties and improve how the body responds to insulin. Most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.¹

This dual action distinguishes it from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide (Wegovy and Ozempic). Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly 4 to 5 weeks to clear the system. Nothing needs doing while that happens.¹

It is made by Eli Lilly and supplied as a pre-filled multi-dose KwikPen in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg. Each pen contains four weekly doses.

05 · Dose ladder and injecting

How do the doses and injections work?

Everyone starts on 2.5mg once a week. That starting dose is about letting your body adjust, not weight loss itself. After at least 4 weeks on each dose, depending on how you respond, the dose can step up to 5mg. It can then rise by 2.5mg at a time, never faster than every 4 weeks, through 7.5mg, 10mg and 12.5mg to a maximum of 15mg weekly.¹

Many people settle at 5mg, 10mg or 15mg. Higher is not automatically better, and your prescriber guides the pace. Our consultations and monthly reviews cover dose-titration and follow-up assessments, so you are not left to decide alone.

Mounjaro is injected under the skin once a week, on the same day each week, at any time of day, with or without food. Licensed sites are the stomach area (at least 5cm from the belly button), the front of the thigh, or the back of the upper arm if someone else gives the injection. Rotate the site each dose.¹

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can within 4 days (96 hours) of the scheduled time. If more than 4 days have passed, skip it and take the next one on your normal day. Never take two doses within 3 days of each other. You can change your injection day if at least 3 days (72 hours) have passed since your last dose.¹³

06 · Results and realistic pace

What results can you expect from Mounjaro?

In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone. These are trial averages. Individual results vary.²

At 72 weeks, 85% of participants on 5mg, 89% on 10mg and 91% on 15mg had lost at least 5% of their body weight. Half of those on 10mg and 57% on 15mg lost at least 20%.² As a worked example, for someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg. Trial averages do not predict your own result.

Weight loss on Mounjaro is gradual by design. The first weeks on 2.5mg are an adjustment phase and losses are usually modest. Most measurable progress builds from 5mg onward, month by month. Early loss includes water weight, so judge progress by the trend, not single weigh-ins. Think in months, not days.¹

Your prescriber reviews your response. If you have lost less than 5% of your starting weight after 6 months on the highest dose you can tolerate, they will discuss whether continuing or stopping is right for you.¹

07 · Side effects and safety

What side effects should you know about?

Most Mounjaro side effects are digestive. The most common, affecting more than 1 in 10 people, are nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort. Common effects (up to 1 in 10) include indigestion, reduced appetite, dizziness, reflux, burping, hair shedding and injection-site reactions. They are most likely when starting or moving up a dose, and for most people they ease within days to a few weeks as the body adjusts.¹³

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for:

• severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis);
• pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of the skin or eyes (possible gallbladder problems);
• signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing.

If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion). Your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.¹³ You can report any suspected side effect through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.¹⁹

Does Mounjaro affect the contraceptive pill?

Yes, it can. Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which can reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed. The advice is to switch to a non-oral method, or add a barrier method such as condoms, for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase. This applies to the pill only. Implants, coils and injections are unaffected.¹⁷ Tell your prescriber which method you use.

08 · Storage and travel

How should you store and travel with your pen?

Keep Mounjaro pens in a fridge at 2 to 8°C and never freeze them. Once in use, a pen can be kept out of the fridge not above 30°C for up to 30 days, which suits short trips, after which it should be discarded. Keep the cap on to protect it from light, and never use a pen that has been frozen.¹³

You can fly with Mounjaro. Carry pens in hand luggage, because hold luggage can fall below freezing, ideally in a cool bag with the prescription label or a copy of your prescription. In-use pens tolerate up to 30 days not above 30°C, so most holidays need no special arrangements. For hot climates, use an insulated pouch, and check destination rules for prescription injectables before you fly.¹³

Unopened pens stay in the fridge and keep until the expiry date printed on the box. If an unopened pen has been out of the fridge, check with the pharmacy before using it rather than relying on a remembered day limit.¹³ Our order packaging is temperature-controlled for exactly this reason.

09 · NHS or private pharmacy

Should you wait for the NHS or go private?

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition. The NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40 or above with four or more qualifying conditions.⁴⁶

Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting. Ask your GP first about NHS eligibility. If you do not qualify yet, or would rather not wait, a private prescription through a registered pharmacy is the other route. The NHS prescription charge in England is £9.90 per item where it applies, while a private prescription is paid for at the price shown.

Private does not mean unregulated. A UK pharmacy supplying Mounjaro must be registered, and its prescribers must be registered professionals. You can check any pharmacy on the GPhC register, where ours appears under registration 9012878.¹²

10 · Spotting a genuine pharmacy

How do you spot a genuine Mounjaro pharmacy?

A genuine pharmacy is on the GPhC register, requires a consultation and prescription, and supplies a genuine Lilly KwikPen. Counterfeit and unlicensed weight-loss injections have been the subject of MHRA alerts, so where you buy matters as much as what you pay.⁷

• Look up the pharmacy's registration number on the GPhC register before you pay.¹²
• Walk away from anyone offering to supply without a consultation or prescription.
• Be wary of social-media sellers, unusually low prices and dramatic weight-loss claims.
• Expect the product to arrive in pharmacy labelling, with a patient leaflet, in a sealed pen box.

11 · Delivery and aftercare

What happens after you order?
