Mounjaro Thyroid Warning: What It Actually Means (October 2026)

The Mounjaro thyroid warning exists because tirzepatide caused thyroid C-cell tumours in rodent studies. It is not known whether this applies to humans, and no increase has been shown in human trials.1 The warning matters most if you or a close relative have had medullary thyroid cancer or MEN 2. Current as of October 2026.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • The warning comes from animal studies; no increase in thyroid tumours has been shown in human trials.
  • Tell your prescriber about any personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN 2.
  • Routine thyroid monitoring is not required for most people on Mounjaro.
  • A treated underactive thyroid is a conversation to have with your prescriber, not an automatic bar.
  • Other Mounjaro warnings, such as pancreatitis and gallbladder symptoms, need separate attention.

01 · The core answer

Does the Mounjaro thyroid warning apply to me?

For most people it is a precaution rather than a reason to avoid treatment. The warning is based on rodent studies, where tirzepatide caused thyroid C-cell tumours. It is not known whether this applies to humans, and no increase has been shown in human trials.1

What your prescriber will ask about is specific. Tell them if you or a close relative have had medullary thyroid cancer or the inherited condition MEN 2, because they will weigh this in your assessment.1

Your situationWhat it means for the warningWhat to do

02 · Your next step

What should I do before starting?

Be complete and honest in your health questionnaire. Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, so your history shapes the decision.

If you are weighing up whether treatment is right, our guide on whether you can take Mounjaro with thyroid issues goes through the common scenarios.

03 · Where the warning comes from

Where the thyroid warning comes from

The warning reflects animal data, not a pattern seen in patients. In rodent studies tirzepatide caused thyroid C-cell tumours, and it is not known whether this applies to humans.1 No increase has been shown in human trials.1

Our page on whether Mounjaro can cause thyroid tumours covers the question in more depth.

04 · Has anyone developed thyroid cancer?

Has anyone developed thyroid cancer from Mounjaro?

No increase in thyroid tumours has been shown in human trials. The animal finding remains the reason for the precaution.1

If you notice a new lump in the neck, a persistent hoarse voice or trouble swallowing, tell your prescriber or GP. You can also report any suspected side effect through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19

For a longer treatment of the evidence, see our complete UK guide to Mounjaro and thyroid cancer.

05 · Other warnings to know

Other Mounjaro warnings worth knowing

The thyroid warning is not the only one, and for most people the more practical risks sit elsewhere. Mounjaro is not suitable for everyone. You should not take it if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients.13 Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. If you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly.

Your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems.13 Always share your full medical history and medicine list during consultation.

Kidneys and liver are a common worry. Mounjaro is not known to damage kidneys or liver directly. The practical risk is indirect: severe vomiting or diarrhoea can cause dehydration, which can strain the kidneys, so keep fluids up and contact your clinical team if you cannot keep fluids down.1

06 · Symptoms needing urgent help

Serious side effects: when to seek help

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting, which could be pancreatitis: stop using Mounjaro and get medical help straight away.13

Pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of the skin or eyes could signal gallbladder problems: get medical help straight away. Signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing, need medical help straight away.13

If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar, such as shakiness, sweating or confusion. Your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.13

07 · Mood, monitoring and stopping

Mood, monitoring and stopping treatment

Regulators have looked at mood specifically. The EMA's safety committee reviewed the evidence and concluded in 2024 that it does not support a causal link between GLP-1 medicines and low mood or suicidal thoughts, and the MHRA keeps this under continuous review.17 Tell your prescriber about any history of depression, and seek help promptly if your mood drops or you have distressing thoughts during treatment.

If you have thoughts of harming yourself or ending your life, get help straight away. Call 999 or go to A&E if you are in immediate danger. In England you can call NHS 111 and choose the mental health option, any time. You can also call Samaritans free on 116 123, day or night. Tell your prescriber about any change in your mood while taking Mounjaro.

If you stop, tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so it takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system. There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1

Treatment is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, and individual results vary. Our prescribing team offers ongoing monthly reviews, so you have a clinical point of contact if questions come up. If you take thyroid medication, our thyroid medication timeline guide explains how the two can fit together.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Is Mounjaro bad for people with thyroid problems?
Not automatically. The warning concerns thyroid C-cell tumours seen in rodents, and no increase has been shown in human trials. What matters is your history, especially medullary thyroid cancer or MEN 2, in you or a close relative. Share your full medical history and medicines so your prescriber can assess you individually.
Has anyone gotten thyroid cancer from Mounjaro?
The product information says no increase in thyroid tumours has been shown in human trials, and it is not known whether the rodent finding applies to humans. Online stories cannot prove cause and effect. Report any new neck lump or symptom to your prescriber, and any suspected side effect through the Yellow Card scheme.
Who cannot take Mounjaro?
You should not take it if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, or during pregnancy or while trying to conceive. Your prescriber takes extra care with a history of pancreatitis, severe gut disease, diabetic retinopathy or gallbladder problems, and will also ask about medullary thyroid cancer and MEN 2.
What are the worst side effects of Mounjaro?
Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. They include severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); upper right abdominal pain, fever or yellowing of the skin or eyes (possible gallbladder problems); and signs of a severe allergic reaction: get medical help straight away for any of these.
How can I avoid pancreatitis on Mounjaro?
There is no proven way to prevent pancreatitis while taking Mounjaro. Tell your prescriber before you start if you have ever had pancreatitis, gallstones or gallbladder disease, or severe digestive problems. Learn the warning sign: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without being sick, could be pancreatitis, so stop using Mounjaro and get medical help straight away. If it happens, stop using Mounjaro and get medical help straight away.
What are the long-term effects of Mounjaro?
Routine thyroid monitoring is not required for most people. Ongoing reviews with your prescriber are the place to raise anything new, and you can report side effects via Yellow Card.
Can you keep weight off after stopping Mounjaro?
Mounjaro works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, and results vary between people. After a final dose it takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system. In SURMOUNT-4, people who stopped tirzepatide after 36 weeks regained on average 14% of body weight over the following year, while those who continued lost a further 5.5%. Stopping should be planned with your prescriber, with diet and activity habits ready.
