What does a Mounjaro starter kit cost in the UK?

The starter kit starts at £169.99 for one 2.5mg pen, which lasts four weeks, equal to £42.50 per week. A new customer gets £40 off their first order with code FIRST40, so your first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99. That is a first-order price, not a monthly price. After the first order, every future order is £25 off the standard price (code DOSE25, applied automatically). The ongoing monthly cost at any dose is therefore that dose's standard price minus £25. What the first year costs

The starter kit is only the first step. The table uses standard prices before any discount.

A first year costs £2,399.88 if you settle at 5mg, up to £3,279.88 at 15mg. For a 7.5mg, 10mg or 12.5mg maintenance dose, the monthly prices are £244.99, £274.99 and £289.99. These totals are before discounts: your first order is £40 less and every later order £25 less. Your prescriber decides which dose suits you, so treat the table as a planning range, not a promise.

What the price includes

The consultation is free, and the price shown is the price paid, with no hidden fees. Needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance come with every order. Delivery is free, next-day, tracked and sent in temperature-controlled packaging; Saturday delivery is £14.99. Orders placed by 3pm are dispatched the same day.

Ongoing monthly reviews, dose-titration support and side-effect support from the prescribing team are part of the service. Payment is by Visa or Mastercard, Klarna or pay-monthly options, with no subscription lock-in. Repeat orders re-check suitability and nothing ships automatically.

04 · What a starter kit is

What is in a Mounjaro starter kit?

A Mounjaro starter kit is the lowest-strength pen, the 2.5mg KwikPen, supplied with the items you need to start injecting. Eli Lilly does not sell a separate branded "kit". The phrase is shorthand that pharmacies use for the first pen plus supporting items. Our version includes needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance with every order.

Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly. In the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes. It comes as a pre-filled multi-dose pen, the KwikPen, in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.¹

That means the starter kit is the first step on a ladder, not a standalone product. Each pen is a four-week supply, because you inject once a week. Your prescriber reviews you at each stage and decides whether to move up to the next strength. The product page shows current pen prices for each strength.

Be wary of anything marketed as a "starter kit" that bundles unrelated items, or that offers several strengths in one go without a consultation. Prescription medicines should only be supplied after a prescriber has reviewed your health questionnaire. We are GPhC-registered (9012878), and you can check the register yourself. A genuine starter kit is simply the right strength of genuine pen, supplied lawfully, with the guidance to use it properly.

Some pages online use the words kit, bundle and pack interchangeably. We cover the differences in our guides to the Mounjaro kit and the starter bundle. Laboratory items such as a GLP-1 ELISA kit or a GLP-1 screening kit are research or testing products. They are not treatments and have nothing to do with the medicine you inject.

The 2.5mg pen is the starting strength. The six strengths are the whole range, and we stock all six, so you can stay with one provider from your first pen onwards.

05 · How it works

How does Mounjaro work?

Mounjaro works by activating two natural gut-hormone receptors at once, GIP and GLP-1. Tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to do this. Together these actions help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.¹

In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals. That supports a reduced-calorie diet, which is the framework the medicine is licensed within. It is not a replacement for eating differently or moving more.

This dual action is what distinguishes Mounjaro from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide, sold as Wegovy and Ozempic. Why the first pen is a low strength

The 2.5mg pen is the starting strength, and it sits at the bottom of a six-strength ladder. Having a low first pen gives you and your prescriber a chance to see how you get on before moving up. Your first review is a good moment to ask what the plan is.

How long it stays in your system

Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days. After a final dose it takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear the system.¹ There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears. This matters for starter-kit buyers in two ways. First, the effects of a dose are not instant or short-lived. Second, if you stop, your body does not reset the next day. Talk to your prescriber about any plans to pause or stop, rather than making the decision alone.

Because the medicine is once weekly, a pen contains four doses and one pen covers four weeks.

06 · Who can start

Who can start a Mounjaro starter kit?

Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition. Examples include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. It must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.¹

A prescriber will assess your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether it is suitable for you.¹¹ That is why you cannot simply buy a starter kit and begin on your own. You need a prescription, and a prescription needs a consultation.

What the consultation covers

Our consultation is a short health questionnaire. It is free, with no charge and no obligation. A GPhC-registered prescriber reviews it. It is a clinical review, not a scoring script. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full.

Be honest on the questionnaire. Include every medicine you take, including those bought without a prescription, and every condition you have. The prescriber can only make a safe decision with the full picture. If something on your form means Mounjaro is not right for you, you are better off knowing before you inject than after.

Mounjaro is not suitable for everyone. You should not take it if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, and it must not be used during pregnancy; it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. Your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems. Always share your full medical history and medicine list during consultation.

If you are under 18, or your BMI is below the licensed thresholds and you have no weight-related condition, you fall outside the licence. The same goes for anyone looking for a quick cosmetic change. Mounjaro is a long-term medical treatment, not a short-term fix.

07 · Expected results

What results can you expect from the starter kit?

Trial results come from people who stayed on treatment for 72 weeks, not from the starter pen alone. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.²

These are trial averages. Individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them. Trial averages do not predict your own result.

At 72 weeks, 85% of participants on 5mg, 89% on 10mg and 91% on 15mg had lost at least 5% of their body weight. Half of participants on 10mg and 57% on 15mg lost at least 20% of their body weight.²

A worked example

Percentages are easier to picture as weights. For someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg, and 15% is about 15 kg. Your own starting weight, dose and habits will change the number, and the trial figures are averages, not a forecast.²

What the figures do not tell you

The SURMOUNT-1 figures are for 5mg, 10mg and 15mg over 72 weeks. They do not give an average for the 2.5mg starter pen on its own.

A promise like "lose a set amount by a set date" is exactly what you should be suspicious of from a seller. A sensible expectation is gradual progress, tracked over months, with reviews along the way. 08 · Dose ladder costs

How the dose ladder shapes what you pay

Mounjaro comes in six strengths, and each pen has its own price, so your costs change as you move up. The starter kit is the 2.5mg pen at £169.99, or £42.50 per week. The 5mg pen is £189.99 (£47.50 per week), 7.5mg is £244.99 (£61.25 per week) and 10mg is £274.99 (£68.75 per week). The top two are 12.5mg at £289.99 (£72.50 per week) and 15mg at £299.99 (£75.00 per week). These are standard prices for one four-week pen, before discounts.

The strengths are 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.¹ Whether you move through all of them is a clinical decision. Some people settle at a lower strength, others move higher, and your prescriber guides that. This is why we frame costs as a range.

What the first four pens cost

If you step up after 4 weeks on each dose, your first four pens (2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg and 10mg) cost £879.96 at standard prices. Your first order is £40 less with code FIRST40, and each later order is £25 less with code DOSE25, applied automatically. Treat the figure as a ceiling, not a commitment: you pay pen by pen, and nothing renews on its own.

Looking at the year

Over 52 weeks you use 13 pens. Settling at 5mg gives a first-year standard cost of £2,399.88, and settling at 15mg gives £3,279.88. Plan for the dose your prescriber actually recommends, and remember a lower dose is not a worse one. It is simply the dose that fits you.

09 · NHS and private

NHS or private: which route to a starter pen?

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition. The NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.⁴⁶

Full rollout is expected to take years. That is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting. Private treatment uses the same medicine, the KwikPen, and the licence is wider than the NHS criteria, so some people qualify privately who would not yet qualify on the NHS.

How to decide

If you may fit the NHS groups being prioritised now, ask your GP. NHS prescriptions in England carry the standard £9.90 charge, unless you are exempt, which is a different cost structure from private pens. If you do not fit the current groups, or you do not want to wait, a private prescription is a legitimate route when it comes from a regulated pharmacy.

You do not have to pick one for life. People can start privately and talk to their GP about NHS options as access widens. Be open with your GP about any private treatment you are on, because they hold your wider medical record.

What "regulated" means

A regulated route means a GPhC-registered pharmacy and a GPhC-registered prescriber reviewing your questionnaire. You can look up our registration (9012878) on the public register.¹² It is also the line between a safe supplier and a seller offering to supply without a consultation or prescription, which you should avoid.

2. Prescriber review

A GPhC-registered prescriber reviews your answers. It is a genuine clinical review, not a scoring script. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. Declined consultations are refunded in full, and refunds take 5–10 working days.

3. Dispensing and dispatch

Our registered pharmacy dispenses your pen. When you order by 3pm, we dispatch the same day. Your first order carries £40 off with code FIRST40.

4. Delivery

Delivery is free, next-day and tracked with DPD, in discreet, temperature-controlled packaging. Saturday delivery costs £14.99. Your starter kit includes needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance, so you are not left working it out alone.

Returns

Prescription medicines, once dispensed, cannot be returned, except if the item is faulty, damaged or wrong. Contact us within 3 days in those cases. This is standard for prescription medicines and exists to keep the supply chain safe.

11 · Storage and safety

Storing your pen and buying safely

Unopened pens belong in the fridge until first use, and they keep until the printed expiry date. If you have a question about an unopened pen that has been out of the fridge, check the patient information leaflet and ask the pharmacy rather than guessing.¹³

Once you start a pen, UK KwikPens are licensed for up to 30 days (not above 30°C) out of the fridge. That is the in-use window, and it covers the four weekly doses a pen contains.¹ Follow the pen's instructions for each injection, and do not rely on a time you read elsewhere. Beyond the expiry date or the in-use window, sterility and potency are no longer assured, so the pen should be discarded. Your sharps bin is for used needles.

Counterfeit and unregulated sellers

Counterfeit weight-loss injections have been the subject of MHRA alerts, and buying from an unregulated source carries real risk.⁷ Warning signs include a seller offering to supply without a consultation or prescription, prices that seem too good to be true, and sales through social media or marketplaces. Check that the pharmacy appears on the GPhC register. Ours is 9012878.¹²

Side effects and what to do

Read the patient information leaflet before your first injection, and keep it. If you notice a new symptom that worries you, speak to your prescriber. You can also report any suspected side effect to the MHRA through the Yellow Card scheme.¹⁹

Tell your prescriber about any new or lasting symptom.

Contraception

Mounjaro can reduce the absorption of oral contraceptives because it slows stomach emptying. The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.¹ If you use oral contraception, raise it in your consultation, so your prescriber can advise you.⁷ Likewise, if you take insulin or sulfonylureas, your doses may need adjusting because of the risk of low blood sugar, and your prescriber will guide you.

12 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.¹
