Mounjaro and Scurvy: What the Risk Really Is (October 2026)

Mounjaro does not directly cause scurvy. Scurvy is not listed as a side effect in the UK patient leaflet.13 The concern is indirect: the medicine reduces appetite, and if a much smaller diet crowds out fruit and vegetables, vitamin C intake can fall. This is a nutrition risk, not a drug reaction. Current as of October 2026.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Scurvy is a vitamin C deficiency, not a listed side effect of Mounjaro in the SmPC or patient leaflet.
  • The risk is indirect: eating much less can squeeze out fruit and vegetables if meals are not planned.
  • Mounjaro is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet, not a starvation diet, so food quality still matters.
  • New or unusual symptoms should go to your prescriber or GP, and can be reported through the Yellow Card scheme.
  • Eating a varied diet with fresh produce is the practical safeguard; supplements are a conversation for your clinician.
In this guide

01 · The core answer

Does Mounjaro cause scurvy?

No, Mounjaro does not cause scurvy directly. Scurvy is not listed as a side effect in the Summary of Product Characteristics or the patient information leaflet.113 It is a vitamin C deficiency, and it comes from what is (or is not) in the diet over time.

The link people draw is through appetite. Tirzepatide activates the GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which help regulate appetite and slow how quickly the stomach empties. Most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.1 That is the intended effect. The risk arises only if reduced eating becomes very narrow eating.

02 · Is it relevant to you?

Is this relevant to you?

It is most relevant if you are eating very little, avoiding whole food groups, or living on a handful of bland foods because of nausea or food aversion. If your meals still include a range of fruit and vegetables, this is unlikely to be your situation.

Your situationWhat it suggestsSensible next step

03 · Why eating less matters

Why eating less can create nutrient gaps

Mounjaro is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.1 Reduced-calorie does not mean nutrient-poor. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2

When portions shrink, every mouthful has to do more work. Fresh fruit and vegetables are the foods that tend to be skipped first, because they need preparing, and bland convenience food feels easier when appetite is low.

It is a story about dietary narrowing, and it is not specific to one brand.

04 · Eating well on treatment

How to keep your diet varied on Mounjaro

The practical safeguard is simple: build meals around whole foods, and keep fresh produce in every day. Because you feel full sooner, choose nutrient-dense foods first and leave the plainer items for last.

  • Start each meal with the vegetables or fruit, while appetite is at its best.
  • Keep easy options to hand, such as cut fruit, salad bags, tinned or frozen vegetables and soup.
  • Eat small amounts more often if large plates put you off.
  • Include a range of colours across the week rather than the same two or three items.
  • Notice when a food aversion starts to cut out whole groups, and mention it at your next review.

Our guide to Mounjaro lunches has realistic ideas for small, balanced midday meals. If food aversion is making eating harder, the page on the gag reflex on Mounjaro covers a related problem.

A GP, pharmacist or dietitian can advise on what suits you.

05 · When to seek advice

When to speak to a clinician

Speak to your prescriber or GP if you are eating very little, cannot keep food down, or notice any new symptom you cannot explain.

Scurvy is not listed as a side effect in the UK patient leaflet, so tell your prescriber about any new or lasting symptom. Only a clinician can work out what is going on, and that may involve looking at your diet as a whole.

Suspected side effects can be reported through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme, which helps monitor medicines in the UK.19 The patient information leaflet explains what to do about side effects.13 Our own customers have access to ongoing monthly reviews and side-effect support from the prescribing team, so you do not need to manage food worries alone.

06 · Treatment and healthy eating

Is using treatment compatible with eating well?

Yes. Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, supplied after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, and used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.

Some people ask whether relying on an appetite-lowering medicine is a shortcut; our article is GLP-1 cheating? looks at that question. The medicine helps you eat less, and it is up to you and your clinician to make sure what you do eat is worth eating.

07 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Can GLP-1 medicines like Mounjaro cause scurvy?
Not directly. Scurvy is not a listed side effect of Mounjaro in the product information. The concern is indirect: reduced appetite can mean much less food, and if fresh fruit and vegetables drop out of a narrow diet, vitamin C intake can fall. Keeping meals varied is the practical safeguard.
How can you tell if you are getting scurvy?
Scurvy needs a clinician's assessment, so there is no self-diagnosis checklist. If you are eating very little fresh produce and notice new or unexplained symptoms, speak to your GP or prescriber. Do not rely on online symptom lists, and do not start treating yourself first.
Can scurvy be reversed, and how quickly does vitamin C work?
Scurvy is a vitamin C deficiency, and a clinician can advise on treatment and how long recovery takes. If you are worried, see your GP rather than guessing or self-supplementing.
What fruit gets rid of scurvy, and do bananas help?
A varied intake of fresh fruit and vegetables is the everyday way to keep vitamin C in your diet, and citrus fruit is a familiar example. If you suspect a deficiency, a GP or dietitian can advise on foods and any supplement rather than relying on one fruit.
Is two oranges a day enough vitamin C?
Oranges can be part of a varied diet, but needs depend on your overall food intake and health. Ask your GP, pharmacist or a dietitian what is right for you, especially if your appetite is very low.
What should I do if Mounjaro has made me stop eating properly?
Contact your prescriber or GP promptly. Mounjaro is meant to support a reduced-calorie diet, not very restricted eating. Your prescriber can review how you are coping and whether your dose still suits you. Report suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme as well.
Do I need vitamin C supplements on Mounjaro?
No supplement is required with Mounjaro, but eating much less can leave gaps, so a standard daily multivitamin is a reasonable safety net while losing weight. Food variety comes first. If you are worried about your diet, ask your prescriber, pharmacist or GP whether a supplement is sensible for you.
Is it safe to use Mounjaro if I worry about nutrition?
Mounjaro is licensed for weight management and used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Tell the prescriber about your eating habits so they can support you properly.
