What has actually changed in Mounjaro prices?

The one confirmed change is Eli Lilly's list-price increase, announced on 14 August 2025 and effective 1 September 2025.¹⁰ That is an increase of up to 170% on the highest dose.¹⁰

The list price is what Lilly charges the supply chain. It is not the price printed on your pharmacy checkout. Treat any headline that quotes a single "new Mounjaro price" with caution. List price, pharmacy price and the price you pay after a discount are three different numbers.

How much will a year of Mounjaro cost?

If you step up after 4 weeks on each dose, your first four pens (2.5mg to 10mg) cost £879.96 at standard prices. A first year of 13 pens costs £2,399.88 if you stay on 5mg after your 2.5mg starting pen, up to £3,279.88 if you step up through every dose to 15mg. These totals are before discounts: a new customer's first order is £40 less, and every later order is £25 less.

Why did the Mounjaro list price go up?

Lilly's announcement came as part of a statement on America's leading role in biopharmaceutical innovation, which included an agreement to increase the UK list price of Mounjaro.¹⁰

04 · Why pharmacy prices differ

Why do pharmacies charge different prices?

Pharmacy prices differ because discounts off the list price are confidential and each provider sets its own selling price.¹⁰ Two pharmacies buying the same pen from the same supply chain can charge you different amounts.

That is why we track an index rather than quoting a single "UK price". Across the UK pharmacies we track, the biggest gap between providers for the same dose is £36.03 per month, and the smallest is £20. Over a year, a gap at the top end adds up to a lot.

When you compare providers, check four things:

• The dose you will actually be on, not just the starting pen.
• Whether the price shown is the price paid. Ours is, and the consultation is free with no hidden fees.
• Whether a headline price is a first-order price or a standard repeat price.
• Whether the pharmacy is on the GPhC register.¹²

05 · NHS and private pricing

How does NHS access to Mounjaro work?

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years.⁴ NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition. The NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.⁶ Full rollout is expected to take years.⁶

Private prescribing follows the licence. Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. It must be used with a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity.¹¹¹ A prescriber assesses your BMI, medical history and current medicines first.

Is Mounjaro expected to get cheaper?

Future prices cannot be predicted, and no reduction has been announced. Any article promising a specific future drop is speculation.

Do not delay treatment on the hope of a lower price if your prescriber thinks you should start. Equally, do not rush: a free consultation costs nothing and commits you to nothing. How can I lower my Mounjaro cost safely?

The safe levers are the discounts and the provider, not changing how you use the pen. Talk to your clinical team rather than self-adjusting.

Some fake pens contained insulin rather than tirzepatide and caused hospitalisations.⁷ Buy only from a pharmacy you can verify on the GPhC register, never from social media, beauty salons or unverified websites. Anyone offering to supply without a consultation or prescription is not offering genuine treatment.¹²

A genuine pen has a batch number and expiry date, arrives cold-chain packaged, and holds a clear, colourless solution. Do not use a pen that has been frozen, looks cloudy or discoloured, has particles, is past expiry, or has been out of the fridge for more than 30 days in use; in-use pens must stay not above 30°C.¹³
