Another is a possible gallbladder problem: pain in the upper right abdomen, fever, or yellowing of the skin or eyes needs medical help straight away.¹ Again, the discomfort can be felt around the side or back, which is why location alone is a poor guide. Both are uncommon, but if either is suspected, get medical help straight away.

This is also why the prescriber asks about your history before treatment. Mounjaro may not suit you, or needs extra care, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, or gallbladder problems.¹³ Sharing your full medical history and medicine list at consultation is part of keeping you safe.

Other causes of back or side pain exist that have nothing to do with the medicine. If your pain has a clear pattern, comes with a fever, or you simply feel something is wrong, a GP or urgent care service is the right place to start.
