Mounjaro Is Made by Which Company? (October 2026)

Mounjaro is made and owned by Eli Lilly, a US pharmaceutical company that developed the active ingredient, tirzepatide. Lilly holds the brand, so no pharmacy, clinic or other manufacturer produces genuine Mounjaro. Pharmacies such as ours only dispense it. We source it through official LillyDirect supply from Lilly's UK distribution.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Eli Lilly makes Mounjaro and owns the brand; tirzepatide is Lilly's own molecule.
  • UK pharmacies, including EverydayMeds, dispense Mounjaro but do not manufacture it.
  • In the UK the brand name is Mounjaro, licensed for weight management and type 2 diabetes.
  • Genuine pens come from Lilly's distribution chain; buy only from a GPhC-registered pharmacy.
  • The company behind the pen does not change how it works: it is a once-weekly injection.
In this guide

01 · The answer

Who makes Mounjaro?

Eli Lilly makes Mounjaro. Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly. In the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes. It comes as a pre-filled multi-dose pen (KwikPen) in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.1

Lilly discovered tirzepatide, runs the clinical trials, holds the brand and supplies the finished pens into the UK.

If you are asking because you want to know whether the pen in your hand is real, the maker matters a great deal. The page on the company behind Mounjaro covers Lilly itself.

02 · Your next step

Does the manufacturer change what you should do?

Not for most people. The maker is Lilly whichever UK pharmacy dispenses your pen, so the choice between providers comes down to supply route, clinical oversight, service and price rather than who manufactured it.

If you are considering treatment, the sensible path is a consultation with a GPhC-registered prescriber who can check whether tirzepatide is suitable for you. You can read about our weight loss clinic or see how the Mounjaro pen is priced; for a first order the starter pen is £129.99 with code FIRST40 (standard price £169.99).

03 · Eli Lilly and tirzepatide

Eli Lilly and tirzepatide: who owns what

Eli Lilly owns the Mounjaro brand and developed tirzepatide, the active ingredient. Lilly is a large pharmaceutical company based in the United States, with a long history in diabetes medicines. Mounjaro is its most prominent obesity and diabetes product in the UK.

Ownership matters for a practical reason. Because Lilly is the sole manufacturer, there is no generic tirzepatide on the UK market. Anything sold as cheaper tirzepatide, or as a compounded or research version, did not come through Lilly's licensed supply chain. Treat it with real caution.

Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, made by Eli Lilly, and supplied as a KwikPen.1 The patient information leaflet in the box carries the same details.13

04 · Brand names for tirzepatide

What are the brand names for tirzepatide?

In the UK, tirzepatide is sold under the brand name Mounjaro. That is the only UK brand for the molecule, and Lilly is the only company that makes it.

You may see tirzepatide sold under other brand names in other countries. What matters for a UK reader is that Mounjaro is licensed here for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1

Because the same company makes the medicine for different indications, a pen is the same pen whichever reason it is prescribed for. What differs is the prescribing decision: who it is suitable for, the dose, and how treatment is reviewed. Those decisions belong to a prescriber, not to the brand.

05 · Maker versus pharmacy

Manufacturer versus pharmacy: who does what

The manufacturer makes the medicine; the pharmacy checks the prescription, dispenses it and delivers it.

EverydayMeds sits in the pharmacy row. We are a GPhC-registered online pharmacy (registration 9012878), and our supply is official LillyDirect: Mounjaro direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution, genuine KwikPens, with all six doses stocked. We never manufacture or repackage the medicine.

Pharmacies differ on price, service and aftercare, but not on who made the pen. If you are comparing providers, see our page on the cheapest company for Mounjaro for how to read those differences.

06 · Spotting genuine Mounjaro

How to be sure your Mounjaro is genuine

Genuine Mounjaro comes through a registered pharmacy that dispenses it against a prescription. Counterfeit and unlicensed tirzepatide products have been the subject of MHRA alerts, and the regulator runs the Yellow Card scheme for reporting suspected problems.7

Check the seller on the pharmacy register before you buy. The GPhC public register lists registered pharmacies, and you can look up ours with our registration number, 9012878.12

Warning signs are easy to list. Be wary of anyone offering to supply without a consultation or prescription, of sellers describing tirzepatide as a research chemical, and of anyone who promises specific results. Real Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.

The pen itself is a KwikPen in one of six strengths, and it arrives with a patient information leaflet. If a product does not match that description, do not use it, and ask the pharmacy or your prescriber.

07 · How the Lilly medicine works

What Lilly's medicine actually does

Mounjaro works on two gut-hormone pathways at once. Tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1

In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet. This dual action is what distinguishes Mounjaro from single-action medicines such as semaglutide (Wegovy and Ozempic), which are made by a different company.

Lilly's headline weight-loss trial is SURMOUNT-1. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone. These are trial averages — individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2

08 · Mounjaro and the NHS

Is Lilly's Mounjaro available on the NHS?

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).46

Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting. The manufacturer is the same either way. Lilly supplies the NHS and private pharmacies with the same licensed product.

If you are not sure which route fits you, ask your GP about NHS eligibility first, then compare private options if you do not qualify yet or the wait is too long.

09 · Stopping and clearance

How long does tirzepatide stay in the body?

Tirzepatide stays in the body for some weeks after a final dose. It has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system. There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1

Questions about stopping, changing dose or switching medicine should go to your prescriber. Our team provides ongoing monthly reviews, dose titration and follow-up assessments, and repeat orders re-check suitability. There is no auto-shipping.

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a prescription-only medicine, used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Mounjaro is made by which company?
Mounjaro is made by Eli Lilly, the US pharmaceutical company that developed tirzepatide and owns the brand. No other manufacturer produces genuine Mounjaro. UK pharmacies, including EverydayMeds, dispense pens that originate from Lilly's licensed supply chain after a prescriber has reviewed the patient's consultation.
Mounjaro is owned by what company?
Eli Lilly owns Mounjaro. It holds the brand and the tirzepatide molecule, and it runs the clinical trials behind the licence. Pharmacies, wholesalers and clinics do not own the medicine; they distribute or dispense it. That is why genuine pens look and are labelled the same wherever they are supplied.
What are the brand names for tirzepatide?
In the UK, tirzepatide is sold as Mounjaro, made by Eli Lilly. It is licensed here for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes. The same molecule may carry different brand names in other countries, but those are not UK products and are not supplied by UK pharmacies.
What doses does Mounjaro come in?
Mounjaro comes as a pre-filled multi-dose KwikPen in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg. It is injected once weekly. Your prescriber decides your starting dose and any step-ups, based on your consultation and your response, so do not choose a dose yourself.
Does EverydayMeds make Mounjaro?
No. EverydayMeds is a GPhC-registered online pharmacy (registration 9012878) and does not manufacture Mounjaro. We dispense genuine KwikPens supplied through official LillyDirect, direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution, after a free online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.
Is Mounjaro the same as Wegovy or Ozempic?
No. Wegovy and Ozempic contain semaglutide, which is made by a different company, while Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, made by Eli Lilly. Tirzepatide activates two gut-hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1, whereas semaglutide is a single-action medicine. Your prescriber can advise which suits you.
Is Mounjaro available on the NHS?
Yes, but access is phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first. Ask your GP whether you currently qualify.
Where is Mounjaro manufactured?
Eli Lilly is the manufacturer, but the company and the country are separate questions. For safety, what matters most is that your pen is dispensed by a registered pharmacy against a prescription.
