What Mounjaro injection reviews can and cannot tell you

Reviews are good at describing the experience of treatment, and poor at predicting your outcome. People who write them are self-selected, they started at different weights and doses, and they stayed on treatment for different lengths of time. Ratings on review sites change constantly, so check the platform itself if you want a current score.

What you can rely on is the licensed information and the published trial data.

02 · Cost and value

Is Mounjaro worth it? The cost side of the review

Whether it is worth it depends on your health goals, your eligibility and what you can sustain month to month. On cost, the Mounjaro pen costs £169.99 per month at the 2.5mg starting dose, and each pen holds four weekly doses. Your first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40. Every later order is £25 off the standard price (code DOSE25).

Dose matters more than the starter price, because most people spend longer on maintenance than on titration. At standard prices, if you step up after 4 weeks on each dose, your first four pens (2.5mg to 10mg) cost £879.96. A first year of 13 pens costs £2,399.88 if you settle at 5mg, up to £3,279.88 at 15mg. A new customer's first order is £40 less than these totals, and every later order is £25 less.

If you settle between those two, the monthly standard prices are £244.99 at 7.5mg, £274.99 at 10mg and £289.99 at 12.5mg. 04 · Trial results behind reviews

What the trial data shows beside the reviews

SURMOUNT-1 was a trial of 2,539 adults. Alongside diet and exercise, people lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks. The comparison group, using lifestyle changes alone, lost 3.1%.²

These are trial averages, and individual results vary. Treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.² As a worked example, for someone starting at 100 kg, 15% is about 15 kg, 19.5% is about 19.5 kg and 20.9% is about 21 kg. Lifestyle changes alone, at 3.1%, would be about 3 kg.

The trial also reports how many people crossed certain thresholds at 72 weeks. 85% of participants on 5mg, 89% on 10mg and 91% on 15mg had lost at least 5% of their body weight. Half of participants on 10mg and 57% on 15mg lost at least 20%.² That means some people lose less than the average, so trial averages do not predict your own result.

This is where reviews and trials often disagree. A review describing a very large loss is describing one person, usually at a high dose and over a long period. A review describing a modest loss may be someone still on a low dose. Neither tells you what will happen to you.

05 · How quickly it starts working

How quickly does Mounjaro start working, and how much can you lose in a month?

Weight loss on Mounjaro is gradual by design, so it is best to think in months, not days. The first weeks on 2.5mg are an adjustment phase and losses are usually modest. Most measurable progress builds from 5mg onward, month by month.¹

The trials measured results at 72 weeks and not at four weeks, so a reliable one-month figure is not available. Any review quoting a one-month total describes one person's experience, and early loss includes water weight. The trend over weeks matters more than any single weigh-in.¹

Appetite can change faster than the scales do. Some people notice appetite change and early loss in week one, while others feel little until a higher dose. Both are normal.¹

Your prescriber reviews how you are responding. If you have lost less than 5% of your starting weight after 6 months on the highest dose you can tolerate, they will discuss whether continuing or stopping is right for you.¹

06 · Reviews of 2.5mg and early weeks

Can you lose weight on 2.5mg, and how does it feel at first?

Some people notice a change on 2.5mg, but the dose is designed for adjustment, not weight loss. Everyone starts on 2.5mg once a week. After at least four weeks the dose increases to 5mg, then can step up by 2.5mg at minimum four-week intervals, to a maximum of 15mg weekly.¹

Many people settle at a maintenance dose of 5mg, 10mg or 15mg. Higher is not automatically better, and your prescriber guides the right pace.¹

For how it feels, the commonest early effects are mild nausea, altered appetite and tiredness in the first days after each injection, and they usually settle.¹³ Many people choose a weekend morning so early effects fall on days off, though Mounjaro works the same morning or evening, with or without food. What matters is the same day each week.¹

If a symptom is new or does not settle, speak to your prescriber. For severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis), pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of the skin or eyes (possible gallbladder problems), or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing, seek immediate medical help. You can also report suspected side effects through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.¹⁹

07 · Negative reviews and who should avoid it

Are there negative reviews, and who should not take Mounjaro?

Yes, negative reviews exist, and they are worth reading. They tend to fall into a few honest categories: early side effects, slow early progress, cost, and treatment that turned out not to be suitable. The others are about eligibility and fit.

Mounjaro is not suitable for everyone. You should not take it if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, and it should not be used during pregnancy or while trying to conceive. Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. If you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly. Your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems.¹³ Always share your full medical history and medicine list during your consultation.

On thyroid safety, tirzepatide caused thyroid C-cell tumours in rodent studies. It is not known whether this applies to humans, and no increase has been shown in human trials. Tell your prescriber if you or a close relative have had medullary thyroid cancer or the inherited condition MEN 2. Routine thyroid monitoring is not required for most people.¹³

Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. It must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.¹ People from South Asian, Chinese, other Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African or African-Caribbean backgrounds are at higher risk at a lower BMI, so thresholds are usually reduced by 2.5 kg/m² for these groups.⁴

A review from someone with a different health background may not apply to you. A prescriber will assess your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether it is suitable.¹

08 · What to know before starting

What to know before starting Mounjaro

The practical details are the things reviews most often mention in hindsight. Most of them are simple once you know them.

Injecting. Mounjaro is injected under the skin once a week, on the same day each week. Licensed sites are the stomach area (at least 5cm from the belly button), the front of the thigh, or the back of the upper arm if someone else gives the injection. Rotate the site each dose. Missed doses. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can within 4 days (96 hours) of the scheduled time. If more than 4 days have passed, skip it and take the next one on your normal day. Never take two doses within 3 days of each other. You can change your injection day as long as at least 3 days (72 hours) have passed since your last dose.¹

Storage and travel. Keep pens in a fridge at 2–8°C and never freeze them. Once in use, a pen can be kept not above 30°C for up to 30 days, after which it should be discarded. Keep the cap on to protect it from light.¹ You can fly with Mounjaro: carry pens in hand luggage, ideally in a cool bag with the prescription label or a copy of your prescription. If an unopened pen has been out of the fridge, check with the pharmacy before using it.¹³

09 · How long you can stay on it

How long can you stay on Mounjaro?

There is no single answer, because the length of treatment is a decision you make with your prescriber based on your response and health goals. In SURMOUNT-1, the trial measured results over 72 weeks.² Beyond that, your prescriber reviews how you are responding and whether continuing is right for you.

10 · NHS and private reviews

NHS or private: how the reviews differ

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition. The NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.⁴⁶

Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting. When you read reviews, check whether the writer was prescribed through the NHS or privately, because the route affects how quickly someone starts and how they are followed up.

11 · Other GLP-1 injections

GLP-1 injection reviews beyond Mounjaro

Reviews of GLP-1 injections often mix several medicines together, so check which one a review is about. Tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to activate two gut-hormone receptors at once, GIP and GLP-1. This dual action distinguishes it from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide (Wegovy/Ozempic).¹

Wegovy is also a once-weekly pen. Its doses are 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg, stepping up after at least 4 weeks to the 2.4mg maintenance dose from week 17.¹⁸ You can see the Wegovy pen and current availability on its product page.
