Why Mounjaro Causes Constipation: What Helps (October 2026)

Yes, constipation is a recognised side effect of Mounjaro. Constipation is very common on Mounjaro for weight management and may affect more than 1 in 10 people, because food moves through the gut more slowly and many people eat and drink less. 1 It usually responds to fluids, fibre and daily movement, and a pharmacist can advise on a laxative if it persists.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Constipation is a listed, very common Mounjaro side effect, linked to slower gut movement and eating and drinking less.
  • Fluids first, then fibre from vegetables and whole grains, then daily movement, is the order that helps most people.
  • If it persists, ask a pharmacist about a suitable laxative rather than guessing.
  • Pain, bloating or more than a few days without a bowel movement means contacting your clinical team.
  • Severe, persistent stomach pain that spreads to your back needs medical help straight away.
In this guide

01 · The core answer

Why Mounjaro causes constipation

Mounjaro causes constipation through two linked routes: it slows the gut, and it changes how much you eat and drink. Tirzepatide activates the GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which help regulate appetite and slow how quickly the stomach empties.1

The second route is behavioural. Most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.1

So the medicine is doing what it is designed to do, and constipation is a side product of that action rather than a sign that something has gone wrong.

02 · Is it relevant to you?

Will you get it, and for how long?

Not everyone does. Constipation is very common on Mounjaro for weight management and may affect more than 1 in 10 people, because food moves through the gut more slowly and many people eat and drink less. Digestive effects overall are the most common group. The most common, affecting more than 1 in 10 people, are nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort.1

Timing matters. Side effects are most likely when starting treatment or moving up a dose, and for most people they ease within days to a few weeks as the body adjusts.1 If you notice a pattern after each dose increase, that is useful information for your prescriber.

03 · What to do next

What to do if Mounjaro causes constipation

Start with the basics and work upwards. Fluid intake comes first: aim for regular water through the day. Next comes fibre from vegetables and whole grains, then daily movement.13 Our step-by-step piece on how to stop constipation on Mounjaro expands on each of these.

If it persists, a pharmacist can recommend a suitable laxative.13 Ask in person, tell them you take Mounjaro, and mention any other medicines. If you are an existing customer, you can also raise it at your monthly review with the prescribing team.

04 · Practical steps that help

Practical steps that help

Small, consistent habits do most of the work. Constipation on a GLP-1 medicine is rarely fixed by one dramatic change; it improves when fluids, fibre and movement all move in the right direction together.

  • Drink regularly. Sip water through the day rather than catching up in the evening. Fluid intake is the first thing to fix.
  • Add fibre gradually. Vegetables and whole grains are the foundation. Build up steadily so your gut can adjust.
  • Move daily. Gentle activity such as walking helps the gut along.
  • Eat smaller meals slowly. Stop at the first feeling of fullness and favour plain lower-fat foods while adjusting.1

For a longer plan, see our constipation on Mounjaro tips, which are written for people who want to keep their progress on track.

05 · Week-by-week pattern

What to expect as treatment continues

Most side effects follow a pattern: they appear in the first days after starting or increasing a dose, peak early, and settle as your body adapts.1

Keeping a short note of bowel habits alongside your injection day helps you spot this. The free GLPTrackr companion app can be used for that kind of tracking.

If a new dose is hard to tolerate, prescribers can hold the current dose longer before stepping up. Speak to your clinical team rather than pushing through severe symptoms.1 Our week by week constipation guide maps this out in more depth.

06 · Eating too little

Eating too little and your bowels

Eating very little makes constipation more likely, because there is less food, fibre and fluid to move through the gut. Because Mounjaro reduces hunger, it is easy to under-eat without noticing.

Aim for balanced meals with protein, vegetables and whole grains, even when appetite is small. Eat smaller meals slowly and stop at the first feeling of fullness.1 Skipping meals or living on snacks tends to leave stools harder and less frequent.

Mounjaro is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of a balanced diet.1 If you cannot manage regular meals or are very tired, tell your clinical team. Fatigue is a recognised side effect, but severe tiredness that is not settling should be checked.

07 · Constipation vs other gut effects

Constipation versus other digestive effects

Constipation is one of several digestive effects, and some people swing between constipation and loose stools. In the weight-management trials, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea were more common while the dose was being increased and became less frequent over time.1

If your problem is the opposite, read what causes diarrhoea on Mounjaro. Burping with a sulphurous smell is a separate topic, covered in our piece on eggy burps on Mounjaro.

08 · When to get help

When to contact your clinical team or seek urgent help

Contact your clinical team for pain, bloating or more than a few days without a bowel movement.13 Do not wait it out if the discomfort is building.

Some symptoms need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis).1 Our page on what causes pancreatitis on Mounjaro explains the context. Pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin or eyes may signal gallbladder problems, so get medical help straight away. Seek immediate medical help for signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing.

If vomiting is persistent or you cannot keep fluids down, contact your clinical team, because dehydration needs medical help straight away.1 You can report any suspected side effect through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19

09 · Is the trade-off worth it?

Weighing constipation against results

For most people, constipation is a manageable nuisance rather than a reason to stop.

Prescriber review, ongoing monthly reviews and side-effect support are part of the service. Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Does Mounjaro cause constipation?
Yes. Constipation is a recognised side effect of Mounjaro. It is very common and may affect more than 1 in 10 people, because food moves through the gut more slowly and many people eat and drink less. It is most likely when starting or after a dose increase, and for most people it eases as the body adjusts.
What is the best laxative for GLP-1 constipation?
If constipation persists despite fluids, fibre and movement, a pharmacist can recommend a suitable laxative. Tell them you take Mounjaro and list your other medicines. Contact your clinical team for pain, bloating or more than a few days without a bowel movement.
Can Mounjaro give you bowel problems?
Yes, digestive effects are the most common side effects. Nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort affect more than 1 in 10 people. They usually appear after starting or increasing a dose and settle within days to a few weeks. Severe, persistent stomach pain needs medical help straight away.
How can I speed up digestion on Mounjaro?
Mounjaro deliberately slows stomach emptying, so digestion will not return to its old pace while you take it. You can support your gut with regular water, vegetables and whole grains, daily movement, and smaller meals eaten slowly. If that is not enough, ask a pharmacist or your clinical team.
What happens if you eat too little on Mounjaro?
Eating very little can worsen constipation and tiredness, since there is less food, fibre and fluid to keep things moving. Keep meals balanced, with protein, and stay hydrated. If you cannot eat regularly or feel very tired, tell your clinical team. If you cannot keep fluids down, contact your clinical team, as dehydration needs medical help straight away.
Is it safe to eat only once a day on Mounjaro?
Mounjaro is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet, not instead of balanced eating. Smaller meals eaten slowly and balanced nutrition, especially protein, help. If your appetite is so low that you are eating once a day, speak to your prescriber rather than managing it alone.
Can I eat chocolate, cheese or crisps on Mounjaro?
No food is banned, but while your body adjusts it helps to favour plain lower-fat foods and eat smaller meals slowly. Rich, fatty or salty snacks can sit heavily when digestion is slower. Prioritise fluids, fibre and protein most of the time and notice which foods upset your stomach.
What are the do's and don'ts when taking Mounjaro?
Do eat smaller meals slowly, stop at the first feeling of fullness, stay hydrated, stay active and avoid lying down straight after eating. Don't push through severe symptoms, and get medical help straight away for severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back. Report anything worrying to your clinical team, and use the Yellow Card scheme for suspected side effects.
