01 · The core answer
Do women get different benefits from Mounjaro?
Mounjaro is licensed for the same purpose in women and men: weight management in adults. Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly, and in the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1 There is no separate licensed "women's benefit". What women gain is the same effect on appetite and weight, which may matter for the health conditions that run alongside excess weight.
Anyone who tells you women respond in a specific, predictable way is going beyond the data.
This matters because the best decision comes from realistic expectations. The medicine works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2 For a broader overview, see our page on benefits for men, which shows how closely the evidence overlaps.
02 · Evidence check
What is proven, and what is not
The proven part is weight loss. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 These are trial averages, and individual results vary.
| Claim you may have seen | Where it stands |
|---|---|
| Significant weight loss alongside diet and activity | Supported by the SURMOUNT-1 trial; individual results vary |
| Targeted loss of menopause belly fat | Not an established effect of the medicine |
| Improvement in PCOS or hormone imbalance | Not an established effect; discuss with your prescriber or GP |
| Less anxiety, better mood | Not an established effect; report any new symptoms to your prescriber |
| Feeling fuller and less hungry between meals | Described in the mechanism evidence: most people feel fuller sooner |
Our benefits and risks guide sets the upsides beside the downsides.
03 · Your next step
Is Mounjaro relevant to you?
It is relevant if you are an adult looking at weight management and are prepared to change eating and activity habits alongside the medicine. It is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.1 Our consultation is free, with no obligation, and a prescriber, not a scoring script, decides whether treatment is suitable.
Speak to a prescriber first if you may be pregnant, are breastfeeding, are planning a pregnancy, use hormonal contraception or are going through menopause. Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. If you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly. If you use the oral contraceptive pill, switch to a non-oral method or add a barrier method for 4 weeks after starting and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.
When you are ready to look at doses and cost, the Mounjaro pen page has live prices and the consultation. For other support options, see our weight loss clinic. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a prescription-only medicine used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.
04 · Weight-loss results
What weight-loss results can women expect?
Women can expect results in line with the trial averages, but your own result may be higher or lower. The headline evidence is: in the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 Those are trial averages, and individual results vary.
The same trial reported how many people reached particular thresholds. At 72 weeks, 85% of participants on 5mg, 89% on 10mg and 91% on 15mg had lost at least 5% of their body weight.2 Half of participants on 10mg and 57% on 15mg lost at least 20% of their body weight.2 Notice the pattern: higher doses were associated with larger average losses, but most people on the lower dose still lost a meaningful amount.
A worked example helps. For someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg. That is arithmetic on a trial average, not a promise, and it does not tell you how quickly you will get there.
What shapes your own result? The dose you reach, how consistently you inject, and how well you pair the medicine with a reduced-calorie diet and regular activity. Stopping treatment is a separate question, which we cover in our guide on what happens when use stops.
Is weight loss different for women in practice? Many women tell their prescribers about hormonal factors, life stage, medication changes or sleep, and these can affect how the whole process feels. The monthly reviews that come with your treatment are the place to raise it.
Treat the trial numbers as a range of what is possible under trial conditions with support, not a target. Some people lose less than average and still benefit. Some lose more. Plan around steady habits rather than a single number on the scales.
05 · How it works
How does Mounjaro work in the body?
Mounjaro works by acting on gut-hormone signals that influence appetite and digestion. Tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1.1 Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1
In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.1 That is the mechanism behind the weight loss, and it is the same in women and men. There is no separate pathway aimed at female physiology.
This dual action is what distinguishes Mounjaro from single-action medicines such as semaglutide (Wegovy and Ozempic).1 If you are comparing medicines, SURMOUNT-5 was the first large head-to-head trial of tirzepatide and semaglutide for weight loss. Our prescribers can talk through which option suits you.
Why does the stomach-emptying effect matter for you as a woman? Slower emptying is part of why you feel full, and it is also the reason certain other medicines, including some oral contraceptives, may be absorbed differently. The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.1 For now, remember that the pen is a once-weekly injection, supplied in six strengths from 2.5mg to 15mg, and a prescriber reviews your dose as you go.
How long does it stay in your system? Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear the system — there is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1 That is useful to know if you are planning a pregnancy or a change in treatment, and it is why we encourage a conversation with your prescriber well before you stop.
Doses step up gradually, with at least 4 weeks on each dose depending on how you respond, which lets your body adjust and gives your prescriber time to review how you feel before each increase. Our first week guide describes what the beginning typically involves.
06 · Menopause and PCOS
Does Mounjaro help with menopause belly, PCOS or hormones?
Mounjaro is not licensed or proven to treat menopause symptoms, menopause belly or PCOS. Its licensed use is weight management in adults and type 2 diabetes.1
The honest picture is as follows. Many women gain weight around the middle during and after menopause, and understandably want to know whether a weight-management medicine helps. Because Mounjaro reduces appetite and supports a reduced-calorie diet, you may lose weight overall, and some of that may come from the abdomen.
PCOS is similar. Weight and PCOS are linked for some women, and losing weight may be part of a wider plan. But Mounjaro is not a treatment for the condition itself, and it is not a replacement for specialist care. If you have PCOS, tell the prescriber during your consultation so your history is considered, and keep your GP or specialist involved.
What about hormone replacement therapy or other menopause treatments? Do not stop or change any of them on the strength of an article. Mention everything you take in your consultation so the prescriber can review the full picture. If you notice a new symptom after starting any medicine, tell your prescriber, and you can report it yourself through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19
A fair summary: if your goal is weight management and you meet the criteria, Mounjaro may help with the weight. Whether that eases how menopause feels in your body is something to discuss personally rather than assume. Our page on tirzepatide online for women sets out how the service works if you decide to go ahead.
Be wary of promises. Any page that says Mounjaro rebalances hormones or melts menopause fat is selling an outcome, not describing evidence. We would rather you start with accurate expectations and be pleasantly surprised than the reverse.
07 · Mood and feeling good
Does Mounjaro help with anxiety, and why do some people feel so good?
Mounjaro is not an established treatment for anxiety, and improved mood is not a listed benefit of the medicine. If you are dealing with anxiety, low mood or any mental health concern, speak to your GP or prescriber rather than relying on a weight-management injection.
Why might some people feel so good on it? Many people feel a sense of relief when constant thoughts about food quieten, which fits with the described effect that most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals.1 Making steady progress on a health goal can also lift confidence and energy for some people. These are general human observations, not proof of a drug effect on mood.
The opposite can also happen. Some people feel unwell, tired or low in the early weeks or after a dose increase. Because new symptoms matter, tell your prescriber about any change in mood, sleep or wellbeing. Do not wait for the next review if something worries you.
If you have thoughts of harming yourself or ending your life, get help straight away. Call 999 or go to A&E if you are in immediate danger. In England you can call NHS 111 and choose the mental health option, any time. You can also call Samaritans free on 116 123, day or night. Tell your prescriber about any change in your mood while taking Mounjaro.
Is it worth tracking how you feel? Yes. Keeping brief notes on appetite, energy, mood and side effects gives your prescriber something concrete to review. Our free GLPTrackr companion app is designed for tracking a treatment journey on iOS and Android.
Report any suspected side effect to your prescriber and, if you wish, through the Yellow Card scheme.19 To understand the usual side effects, read our side effects guide.
One more point about expectations: weight management is a long-term project. Feeling good in the early weeks is welcome, but the medicine is only part of what keeps you well. Sleep, support from friends and family, and regular check-ins with a clinician all count.
08 · Contraception and pregnancy
Contraception, pregnancy and who should not take Mounjaro
Women who could become pregnant should discuss contraception and pregnancy plans with a prescriber before starting. Tirzepatide slows how quickly the stomach empties,1 and the MHRA has published guidance on contraception with this type of medicine.7 The medicine can reduce absorption of oral contraceptives because stomach emptying slows. The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase. This applies to the pill only.
This is the kind of practical question where a personalised answer beats any web page. Your prescriber will ask about your contraception, any plans for pregnancy and whether you are breastfeeding. Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. If you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly. Be candid. The answers shape whether treatment is suitable and what additional precautions may be advised. Our dedicated guide, is Mounjaro safe for pregnant women, goes into the topic in more depth.
Who should not take Mounjaro? You should not take Mounjaro if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, and it should not be used during pregnancy or while trying to conceive. Your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems. Always share your full medical history and medicine list during consultation. Your consultation questionnaire is designed to surface the relevant conditions, and a GPhC-registered prescriber reviews your answers. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full.
If you are planning a pregnancy, timing matters. Remember that tirzepatide takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system after the final dose, and nothing speeds that up. Raise your plans early so a prescriber can advise on the sequence. Do not stop, start or change treatment without that advice.
Other medicines are worth declaring too. Some people take insulin or other diabetes treatments, and doses of those may need adjusting because of low blood sugar risk; this is a prescriber decision, not a reason to avoid the conversation. Tell us about everything you take, including hormonal treatments and supplements.
If you start treatment and later suspect you could be pregnant, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly. Keep the leaflet from your pen box where you can find it, and use the support route we describe in your order for questions between reviews.
09 · Eating and daily habits
What to eat, what to avoid and when to inject
Mounjaro is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, so what you eat still matters. The medicine helps with fullness, but it does not choose your meals for you. Most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.1
What are good things to eat? A sensible approach is to build meals around protein, vegetables and wholegrains, and to eat smaller portions at a steady pace, because you may feel full faster. If you wonder whether salads are good, they can fit well into a reduced-calorie diet, but a salad that is mostly dressing, cheese or croutons may not. A dietitian or your prescriber can tailor advice, particularly if you have other health conditions.
What should you avoid? Because the medicine slows stomach emptying, very large, rich or greasy meals may feel uncomfortable for some people. If a food repeatedly makes you feel unwell, note it and talk to your prescriber. Do not treat that as a rule from us, simply as a practical observation to share. Alcohol and any new supplement are also worth mentioning to your prescriber rather than guessing.
When is the best time of day to take it? Mounjaro is a once-weekly injection, so the key is choosing a day you can remember and keeping to it. For anything more specific, follow the patient information leaflet that comes with your pen and your prescriber's instructions.13
Storage matters too. Keep pens in the fridge at 2–8°C and never freeze them. Once in use, a pen can be kept out of the fridge at a temperature not above 30°C for up to 30 days after first use, and must then be thrown away.13 Needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance come with every order.
Finally, think about habits rather than rules. Regular movement you enjoy, steady sleep and a plan for social occasions all help the medicine do its job. Use your monthly reviews to adjust the plan as your appetite and routine change. If you want a sense of what the early days feel like, our first-week guide is a good companion.
10 · Serious side effects
Serious side effects: when to get help straight away
Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1
11 · NHS, private and cost
NHS or private: how do women get Mounjaro and what does it cost?
Women can get Mounjaro through the NHS or through regulated private treatment, depending on eligibility and timing. Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years.5 NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).46 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.
If you go private, here is how the cost works as of October 2026. The Mounjaro pen at the 2.5mg starting dose has a standard price of £169.99 per month, and a new customer's first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40. After that, every later order is £25 off the standard price with code DOSE25. Prices were checked 11 October 2026, and all six doses are in stock.
The first four pens, covering the 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg and 10mg pens, cost £959.96 at standard prices before discounts. A first year costs £2,711.88 if you settle at 5mg, up to £3,599.88 at 15mg, again before discounts; a new customer's first order is £40 less and every later order £25 less. If you settle at 7.5mg, 10mg or 12.5mg, the monthly standard prices are £279.99, £290.99 and £319.99. Switching from another provider at 15mg? Your first order is £289.99.
What do you get for the price? Our consultation is free, and the price shown is the price paid, with no hidden fees. Supply is official LillyDirect, so you receive genuine KwikPens direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution. A GPhC-registered prescriber reviews every consultation, and ongoing monthly reviews are included. We are GPhC-registered (9012878). Delivery is free, next-day, tracked and temperature-controlled, with same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm; Saturday delivery is £14.99.
Ordering works in simple steps: complete the free online consultation, a prescriber reviews it, and the pharmacy dispenses and dispatches. Repeat orders re-check suitability, and nothing ships automatically. There are no subscriptions, and Klarna and pay-monthly options are available. The NHS prescription charge in England is £9.90 for NHS prescriptions, which is separate from private supply.
Be cautious of anyone offering to supply without a consultation or prescription, or at prices that look too good to be true. Counterfeit pens are a real risk, and the MHRA publishes counterfeit alerts.7 You can check our registration on the GPhC register.12
