A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Mounjaro is licensed in the UK for weight management and for type 2 diabetes, not as a heart treatment.
  • Tell your prescriber about any heart condition, palpitations or rhythm problems before you start and at every review.
  • Get medical help straight away for new chest pain, a racing or irregular heartbeat, or difficulty breathing; do not wait for your next review.
  • Treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, and individual results vary.
In this guide

01 · The core answer

Does Mounjaro help heart health?

Mounjaro is licensed for weight management and for type 2 diabetes, and heart health is one reason many people want to treat both. Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly. In the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1

For a deeper look at the question itself, our guide on whether Mounjaro helps heart health goes through the reasoning step by step.

02 · Your decision

Is this relevant to me?

It is relevant if you have a heart or circulation condition, a family history of one, or you simply want to know how weight treatment fits with your cardiovascular risk. The decision in front of you is rarely "Mounjaro or my heart". It is whether treatment is suitable given everything your prescriber knows about you.

That is why the consultation matters. At EverydayMeds, a free online consultation is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, not a scoring script, and if the prescriber decides treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. Be specific about heart conditions, medicines you take for them, palpitations, fainting or any previous heart procedures. Get medical help straight away for palpitations, chest pain or fainting. The more complete your answers, the safer the decision.

If you are already on treatment and notice heart-related symptoms, read our page on Mounjaro heart side effects and speak to a clinician. If you are weighing treatment overall, our weight loss clinic explains the pathway, and the Mounjaro pen page shows current doses and prices, with the first 2.5mg pen at £129.99 as a first-order price with code FIRST40 (standard price £169.99).

03 · What the licence covers

What Mounjaro is licensed for

Mounjaro comes as a pre-filled multi-dose pen (KwikPen) in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.1 The licensed uses are weight management in adults and type 2 diabetes. Neither is a heart indication.

That distinction matters for how you read headlines. A regulator in another country can approve a medicine for an additional use based on its own review. A UK licence is a separate decision, and your prescriber works from the UK product information.

Treatment is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. It is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. Individual results vary.

If you would like the wider picture across the medicine class, our pages on weight loss injections and heart health and on this medicine class and the heart compare what is and is not established across the different products.

04 · How it works

How tirzepatide works

Tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1.1 Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin. In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.

This is a metabolic and appetite mechanism.

The same dual action distinguishes Mounjaro from single-action medicines such as semaglutide (Wegovy and Ozempic). That is a description of mechanism, not a heart-outcome comparison.

05 · Weight results

Weight-loss results and your heart

In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2

These are trial averages, and individual results vary. Treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2

What a prescriber can do is look at your own readings before and during treatment and judge the change that matters for you. Our Mounjaro checkup guide covers what is usually reviewed.

06 · Heart rate and rhythm

Heart rate, palpitations and rhythm questions

People often ask whether Mounjaro changes heart rate or can cause atrial fibrillation. A fast pulse is listed as a common side effect (up to 1 in 10 people) in the UK patient leaflet, and your prescriber can go through it with you.13

If you notice a racing, pounding or irregular heartbeat, chest pain, fainting or sudden breathlessness, get medical help straight away.

You can also report any suspected side effect through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme, which helps regulators spot patterns.19 Our page on Mounjaro heart palpitations explains what people describe and how to approach it calmly, and our overview of Mounjaro and the heart collects the related questions.

07 · Existing heart conditions

If you already have a heart condition

An existing heart condition does not automatically rule treatment in or out, but it must be part of the conversation. The answer depends on the condition, how stable it is and what you already take. You should not take Mounjaro if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, and it should not be used during pregnancy or while trying to conceive. Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. If you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly. Your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems.13

Before your consultation, gather the following:

  • Your diagnoses, including any heart failure, rhythm problem, angina or previous heart attack or stroke.
  • A full list of medicines, including blood pressure tablets, blood thinners, diabetes medicines and anything bought over the counter.
  • Any recent hospital letters or test results you can describe.
  • Symptoms you have noticed, even if they seem minor.

If your condition is heart failure specifically, read our dedicated page on Mounjaro and heart failure. For anything complex, your GP or cardiology team knows your history best and should be told you are considering treatment.

08 · Long-term and stopping

Long-term effects and stopping treatment

On stopping, tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system. There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1

If you are thinking about stopping, speak to your prescriber first so you can plan diet, activity and monitoring. Ongoing monthly reviews, dose titration and follow-up are part of the aftercare we provide, and repeat orders re-check suitability, with no auto-shipping.

09 · NHS and private routes

NHS or private: how to get assessed

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).46 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.

If you go private, choose a pharmacy that is on the GPhC register. EverydayMeds is GPhC-registered (9012878), and our Mounjaro comes through official LillyDirect supply, as genuine KwikPens. Delivery is free, next-day, tracked and temperature-controlled, with same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm. All six doses are in stock.

Wherever you are treated, tell every clinician about every medicine you take.

10 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

11 · Questions to ask

Questions to ask your prescriber

A short list helps you get the most from a consultation or review. Consider asking:

  • Does my heart history change whether this is suitable for me?
  • Which readings, such as blood pressure, should we track, and how often?
  • Which symptoms should make me contact you or seek urgent help?
  • How will my other medicines be reviewed as my weight changes?
  • What is the plan if I want to pause or stop?

Those questions turn a general topic into a plan for you.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Which is better for heart health, Ozempic or Mounjaro?
No licensed medicine is better for everyone on heart health. Ozempic is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes; it is not a UK weight-loss medicine, and the licensed weight-management options are Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and Wegovy (semaglutide 2.4mg). Tirzepatide acts on two gut-hormone receptors, while semaglutide, the medicine in Ozempic and Wegovy, acts on one. That describes mechanism, not heart outcomes. Your prescriber can advise which licensed option suits your history and goals.
Who cannot take Mounjaro?
You should not take Mounjaro if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, and it should not be used during pregnancy or while trying to conceive. Your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems. Tell your prescriber about every condition and medicine, including heart problems. Unsuitable orders are declined and refunded automatically after review by a GPhC-registered prescriber, so full, honest answers protect you.
Does Mounjaro impact heart rate?
A fast pulse is listed as a common side effect in the UK Mounjaro patient leaflet, affecting up to 1 in 10 people, so tell your prescriber about any change. If you notice a racing, pounding or irregular heartbeat, get medical help straight away, and report suspected side effects through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19
Can Mounjaro cause atrial fibrillation?
A fast pulse is listed as a common side effect in the UK patient leaflet. Tell your prescriber if you have a rhythm problem, and get medical help straight away for an irregular or racing heartbeat, fainting or chest pain. Report suspected reactions via Yellow Card.19
What are the long-term effects of Mounjaro?
The product information and your prescriber are the right places for this. Ongoing monthly reviews let the prescribing team monitor how you are doing and adjust or stop treatment if needed.
Are there any irreversible side effects of Mounjaro?
Report any new or worrying symptom to your prescriber, and use the MHRA Yellow Card scheme for suspected side effects.19 Your prescriber can discuss your individual risks.
What should I avoid while taking Mounjaro?
Avoid starting treatment without telling your prescriber about all your medicines and conditions, and avoid buying from sellers offering to supply without a consultation or prescription. Use it alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Do not use a pen that has been above 30°C or has been frozen, and tell your prescriber about any history of pancreatitis, gallbladder problems or other conditions.
Can you keep weight off after stopping Mounjaro?
Mounjaro manages weight; it does not cure the biology behind it. In SURMOUNT-4, people who stopped tirzepatide after 36 weeks regained on average 14% of body weight over the following year, while those who continued treatment lost a further 5.5% on average. Plan diet, activity and monitoring with your prescriber before you stop, rather than stopping suddenly without a plan.
