What does Mounjaro 5mg cost after the price increase?

The standard price of one 5mg pen is £189.99. A pen is four weekly doses, so that is £47.50 per week. This is the standard price, and it is what a repeat order costs before the reorder discount is applied. We show our prices live, so the figure you see on the Mounjaro pen page is the one you pay. Prices were checked 25 October 2026.

What actually changed on 1 September 2025?

Eli Lilly raised the UK list price of Mounjaro. List prices rose from £92–£122 per month to £133–£330 per month depending on dose, an increase of up to 170% on the highest dose.¹⁰ The rise applied to the price pharmacies pay for supply. It did not change the medicine, the pen or the licensed dosing.

03 · Planning

What does a year on Mounjaro cost with 5mg as the maintenance dose?

Everyone starts on 2.5mg and steps up, so the first year is not twelve identical pens. A new customer's first order is £40 less, and every later order is £25 less.

A first year costs £2,399.88 if you settle at 5mg, up to £3,279.88 at 15mg. Other maintenance doses are simply that dose's monthly price: £244.99 at 7.5mg and £289.99 at 12.5mg.

How does ordering work?

Ordering takes three steps. First, complete the free online consultation, a short health questionnaire with no charge and no obligation. Second, a GPhC-registered prescriber reviews it. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. 05 · List price versus pharmacy price

List price versus the price you pay

The list price is what the manufacturer sets for supply, and the pharmacy price is what you are charged. They are different numbers. Lilly's statement of 14 August 2025 set out the agreement to raise the UK list price of Mounjaro, effective 1 September 2025.¹⁰ List prices rose from £92–£122 per month to £133–£330 per month depending on dose. The highest dose saw an increase of up to 170%.

Why does that matter for a 5mg buyer? Because the headlines quote the largest percentage, which applied to the top of the dose range. The rise was not a single flat uplift across every strength. A reader who sees "170%" should not assume their own pen rose by that much.

06 · What 5mg is for

What the 5mg dose is for

The 5mg pen is the first step up from the starting dose. Everyone starts Mounjaro on 2.5mg once a week. That dose is about letting your body adjust, not about weight loss itself. After at least 4 weeks the dose increases to 5mg, and it can then rise by 2.5mg at a minimum of 4-week intervals, through 7.5mg, 10mg and 12.5mg, up to a maximum of 15mg weekly.¹

Many people settle at a maintenance dose of 5mg, 10mg or 15mg. Higher is not automatically better, and your prescriber will guide the right pace.

Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly. In the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes, in a pre-filled multi-dose KwikPen with six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.¹

What can 5mg deliver? In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone. At 72 weeks, 85% of participants on 5mg had lost at least 5% of their body weight.² These are trial averages and individual results vary. Treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them. As a worked example only, for someone starting at 100 kg, 15% is about 15 kg.

Progress is gradual by design. The first weeks on 2.5mg are an adjustment phase and losses are usually modest. Most measurable progress builds from 5mg onward, month by month. Think in months, not days, and judge progress by trend rather than single weigh-ins.¹¹ Your prescriber reviews response: if you have lost less than 5% of your starting weight after 6 months on the highest dose you can tolerate, they will discuss whether continuing or stopping is right for you.

On side effects: mild nausea, altered appetite and tiredness in the first days after each injection are the commonest early effects and usually settle.

07 · Costing a full year

Costing a year of treatment properly

A realistic year budget starts with the first four pens and then the dose you settle on. If you step up after 4 weeks on each of 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg and 10mg, your first four pens cost £879.96 at standard prices.

The cost after that depends on where you settle. A first year costs £2,399.88 if you settle at 5mg, up to £3,279.88 at 15mg. Those are 52 weeks and 13 pens at standard prices, before any discount. Your first order is £40 less, and every later order is £25 less. Settling at 7.5mg, 10mg or 12.5mg gives a monthly cost of £244.99, £274.99 or £289.99 respectively.

There are a few honest planning points. First, the highest dose is not the goal. The licence says higher is not automatically better, and many people settle at 5mg, 10mg or 15mg.

Second, think about what happens when treatment stops. Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear the system.¹ Stopping should always be planned with your prescriber, with diet and activity habits ready to carry the load.

08 · NHS versus private

NHS or private: where does the price rise matter?

The Lilly increase affected the price pharmacies pay for private supply. It is a private-market issue. Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition.⁴ The NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.⁶

Full rollout is expected to take years. That is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting. If you are in a higher-need group, ask your GP what is available locally. NHS prescriptions in England carry the standard prescription charge of £9.90 per item where it applies, though your own exemption status may differ. Who is licensed for private treatment? Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition. Examples include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. It must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. A prescriber assesses your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether it is suitable.¹

So the choice is not simply NHS or private. Some people meet NHS criteria and wait for local access. Others meet only the licensed criteria and use private care. Others use the NHS for some support, such as GP monitoring, and private supply for the medicine. None of these is a wrong answer. What matters is that supply comes through a regulated route.

09 · Saving money safely

Saving money without leaving the licence

Mounjaro is licensed as a once-weekly medicine, and its blood levels are designed around a 7-day cycle. Talk to your clinical team rather than self-adjusting.

• Plan the year using the year totals so no order is a surprise.

The medicine slows stomach emptying, and it can reduce absorption of oral contraceptives for that reason.⁷ The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.¹ If you take insulin or sulfonylureas, doses may need adjusting because of the risk of low blood sugar. Do not stop or change them yourself. Tell the prescriber about every medicine you take, including over-the-counter ones, so they can advise. 10 · Genuine pens and storage

Buying a genuine pen and storing it properly

Price rises create room for fakes, so verify your source. The MHRA has seized thousands of fake weight-loss pens in the UK and has issued alerts after falsified Mounjaro pens were identified. Fake pens have caused hospitalisations, and some contained insulin rather than tirzepatide.⁷ Only buy from a pharmacy you can find on the GPhC register, never from social media, beauty salons or unverified websites.¹² Be wary of anyone offering to supply without a consultation or prescription. Genuine treatment always involves both.

Genuine UK stock is supplied through Lilly's official distribution to licensed pharmacies. Every pen carries a batch number and expiry date that can be checked.¹³ A genuine pen comes from a registered pharmacy, arrives cold-chain packaged, and the solution inside is clear and colourless. Do not use a pen that has been frozen, looks cloudy or discoloured, has particles in it, is past its expiry, has been above 30°C, or has been in use for more than 30 days. If supply or packaging ever seems wrong, check the pharmacy on the register and contact it before injecting.

Storage is simple. Keep pens in a fridge at 2–8°C and never freeze them. Once in use, a pen can be kept out of the fridge not above 30°C for up to 30 days, useful for short trips, after which it should be discarded. Keep the cap on to protect it from light. Unopened pens should be kept in the fridge and keep until the expiry date printed on the box. If an unopened pen has been out of the fridge, check with the pharmacy before using it rather than relying on a remembered day limit. Figures circulating online often come from other countries' labels.

When travelling, you can fly with Mounjaro. Carry pens in hand luggage, because hold luggage can fall below freezing, ideally in a cool bag with the prescription label or a copy of your prescription. For hot climates use an insulated pouch.

Using the pen correctly protects the money you spend on it. Inject under the skin once a week, on the same day each week, at any time of day, with or without food. Licensed sites are the stomach area at least 5cm from the belly button, the front of the thigh, or the back of the upper arm if someone else gives the injection. Rotate the site each dose.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can within 4 days (96 hours) of the scheduled time. If more than 4 days have passed, skip it and take the next on your normal day. Never take two doses within 3 days of each other. You can change your injection day if at least 3 days (72 hours) have passed since your last dose. 11 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.¹
