Are UK weight loss injection prices going down?

Eli Lilly announced on 14 August 2025 that list prices would rise from £92–£122 per month to £133–£330 per month from 1 September 2025, up to 170% on the highest dose.¹⁰

Pharmacy sell prices also differ from list prices because of confidential discounts, so the price you see depends on where you shop. If you are asking whether weight loss injections will come down in price, nobody can say with certainty.

What a Mounjaro pen costs with us today

What a year of treatment costs

If you step up after 4 weeks on each dose, your first four pens (2.5mg to 10mg) cost £879.96 at standard prices. A first year (13 pens) costs £2,399.88 if you stay on 5mg after your 2.5mg starting pen, up to £3,279.88 if you step up through every dose to 15mg.

Reports of falling cash prices describe the US market, where manufacturers sell directly to patients under different rules. They do not change what a UK pharmacy pays for stock.

05 · Free or NHS access

Getting weight loss injections for free

The route to a free prescription is the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends Mounjaro for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition. The NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.⁴⁶

06 · Cheaper alternatives

Are there cheaper alternatives to Mounjaro?

Other licensed options exist, and their cost differs. Wegovy (semaglutide) is the main injectable alternative. Its pens are 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg once weekly, stepping up after at least four weeks to the 2.4mg maintenance dose from week 17.¹⁸ Your first Wegovy pen with us costs £99.99 on a first order.

Liraglutide products such as Saxenda are daily injections at 6mg per millilitre, whereas Mounjaro and Wegovy are once weekly. Wegovy tablets and Foundayo are also available, and you can see current prices on the product pages in our weight loss treatments hub.

Supplements marketed as "nature's Ozempic" are low-cost, with no clinical oversight and dosing that is not standardised. Their dramatic weight-loss claims are not a like-for-like alternative to a licensed medicine, and cheap is not the same as effective. Your prescriber can tell you which licensed option fits your health and budget.

Shortcuts that are not savings

Very low prices from social media, beauty salons or unverified websites are a warning sign. The MHRA has seized thousands of fake weight-loss pens in the UK, and some fakes contained insulin rather than tirzepatide and caused hospitalisations. Only buy from a pharmacy you can verify on the GPhC register. Genuine treatment always involves a prescription and a clinical consultation.⁷¹²

08 · Is it worth the cost?

Judging value, not just price

Value depends on whether treatment suits you and whether you can sustain it. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people on tirzepatide with diet and exercise lost on average 15% of body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, against 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone. These are trial averages and individual results vary.²

Progress is gradual. Think in months, not days.
