Is It Safe to Use Mounjaro for Weight Loss? (October 2026)

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a licensed UK medicine, and for most suitable adults it is generally safe when prescribed after a proper assessment and monitored over time. It is not safe for everyone: pregnancy, allergy and certain medical histories rule it out or need extra care. Serious problems are uncommon but need urgent attention.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Mounjaro is licensed in the UK for weight management in adults, and safety depends on a proper medical history review.
  • Gut side effects such as vomiting or diarrhoea are the everyday risk; dehydration is the practical danger to watch.
  • Do not use it in pregnancy, if allergic to tirzepatide, or without prescriber review of pancreatitis or gallbladder history.
  • Regulators reviewed mood concerns and found no causal link, but tell your prescriber about any history of depression.
  • Only use a prescribed, genuine pen from a registered pharmacy; supply without a consultation is a red flag.

01 · The core answer

Is Mounjaro safe for you?

Whether Mounjaro is suitable for you depends on your own health history, which is why a prescriber has to review it first. Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary.

The medicine is licensed in the UK for weight management in adults.1 It is not a shortcut to be taken lightly, and it is not a supplement. Treat it as a serious medicine with real benefits and real risks.

The decision you are facing is usually one of two things: whether you are suitable at all, and whether you can be supervised properly. The weight loss clinic explains how assessment works with us.

02 · Exclusions

Who should not take Mounjaro

Some people should not take Mounjaro at all, and others need extra care. The table sets out the main groups.

SituationWhat it means
Allergy to tirzepatide or its ingredientsYou should not take it
Pregnant or trying to conceiveIt should not be used
History of pancreatitisExtra care, or your prescriber may recommend against it
Severe gut or digestive diseaseExtra care, or your prescriber may recommend against it
Diabetic retinopathyExtra care, or your prescriber may recommend against it
Gallbladder problemsExtra care, or your prescriber may recommend against it

Always share your full medical history and medicine list during consultation.1 Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. If you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly. Your medicine list should include anything you take for mood or blood sugar. For one example, see our guide to taking Mounjaro with sertraline.

03 · Next step

Getting it safely

Safe supply means a genuine pen, a prescriber review and follow-up. At EverydayMeds the consultation is free and reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, and unsuitable orders are refunded automatically. We supply genuine KwikPens through official LillyDirect supply, and ongoing monthly reviews are included.

04 · Side effects and warning signs

Side effects: what to expect and when to act

The most common problems are digestive, because the medicine slows how quickly the stomach empties. Severe vomiting or diarrhoea can cause dehydration, which can strain the kidneys, so keep fluids up and get medical help straight away if you cannot keep fluids down.1 The most common side effects, affecting more than 1 in 10 people, are nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort.13

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting, which could be pancreatitis. Get medical help straight away for pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin or eyes, which could be a gallbladder problem. Swelling of the face or throat with difficulty breathing is a sign of severe allergic reaction: get medical help straight away.1

If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea, watch for low blood sugar: shakiness, sweating or confusion. Your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1 You can report any suspected side effect through the Yellow Card scheme.19

05 · Thyroid, kidneys and liver

Thyroid, kidney and liver safety

In rodent studies tirzepatide caused thyroid C-cell tumours. It is not known whether this applies to humans, and no increase has been shown in human trials.1 As a precaution, tell your prescriber if you or a close relative have had medullary thyroid cancer or the inherited condition MEN 2. Routine thyroid monitoring is not required for most people.

Mounjaro is not known to damage kidneys or liver directly, and no dose adjustment is needed for mild to moderate kidney or liver impairment. People with severe impairment need individual prescriber assessment.1

06 · Mood and mental health

Mood and mental health

Regulators have specifically examined whether GLP-1 medicines are linked to low mood or suicidal thoughts. The EMA's safety committee reviewed the evidence and concluded that it does not support a causal link, and the MHRA keeps this under continuous review.17

If you have thoughts of harming yourself or ending your life, get help straight away. Call 999 or go to A&E if you are in immediate danger. In England you can call NHS 111 and choose the mental health option, any time. You can also call Samaritans free on 116 123, day or night. Tell your prescriber about any change in your mood while taking Mounjaro.

Tell your prescriber about any history of depression, and seek help promptly if your mood drops or you have distressing thoughts during treatment.17

07 · Benefits and long-term use

Benefits, and what we know about long-term use

Safety is a balance against benefit. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 These are trial averages, and individual results vary.

In trials, weight loss came with average improvements in waist size, blood pressure, cholesterol and blood-sugar measures, and most participants with prediabetes returned to normal blood-sugar levels. These are trial-average secondary outcomes, not promises.2

Our page on long-term Mounjaro use covers it in more depth, and the weight loss curve shows how loss typically unfolds. If you stop, tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so it takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system. Nothing needs doing while it clears.1

08 · Safe use in practice

Using it safely in practice

Safe use comes down to a few habits. Be honest in your consultation, follow your prescribed dose schedule and keep in touch with your prescriber. Never use a pen from a seller offering to supply without a consultation or prescription, because a counterfeit pen has no assured contents.

For comparison, you may also want to read how safety looks for weight loss injections.

Access on the NHS is being phased in over several years, with the primary-care rollout starting in June 2025 for the highest-need groups first.6 Whichever route you take, the safety principles are the same.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Do doctors recommend Mounjaro for weight loss?
Prescribers do recommend it for suitable adults. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and NHS access is being phased in over several years. Whether it is right for you depends on your history, which a prescriber must review first.
What are the side effects of taking Mounjaro for weight loss?
Digestive effects are the everyday concern, and severe vomiting or diarrhoea can lead to dehydration. Seek immediate medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain, upper right abdominal pain with fever or yellowing of the skin or eyes, or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. Check the patient information leaflet and report suspected effects through Yellow Card.
What reasons can you not take Mounjaro?
You should not take it if you are allergic to tirzepatide or its ingredients, or if you are pregnant or trying to conceive. Pancreatitis, severe digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy or gallbladder problems need extra care and may mean your prescriber advises against it.
What are the long-term effects of Mounjaro for weight loss?
Thyroid tumours seen in rodents have not been shown in humans, and kidney or liver damage is not a known direct effect. Your prescriber reviews you regularly while you are treated.
Should I be scared to take Mounjaro?
Caution is sensible, but fear is not necessary. It is a licensed medicine with known risks, most of which a proper consultation screens for. Be open about your history, learn the warning signs, and keep in contact with your prescriber so problems are caught early.
Is it worth taking Mounjaro?
For adults who meet the licensed criteria, trials show substantial average weight loss alongside diet and activity, plus improvements in blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar. Results vary and side effects are possible, so the decision should be made with a prescriber, and cost matters too.
Does Mounjaro affect mood?
The EMA's safety committee reviewed the evidence on GLP-1 medicines and suicidal thoughts and found it does not support a causal link. Big changes in weight and routine can still affect how you feel, so mention any history of depression and seek help promptly if your mood drops.
Is it safe to use tirzepatide for weight loss?
Tirzepatide is the active ingredient in Mounjaro and is licensed in the UK for weight management in adults. It is generally safe for suitable people when prescribed and monitored, but not suitable in pregnancy or with allergy, and some medical histories need individual assessment by a prescriber.
