Is It Safe to Use GLP-1 for Weight Loss? (October 2026)

GLP-1 medicines for weight loss are licensed, prescription-only treatments, and whether one is safe for you depends on your medical history and a prescriber's review. Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention, and some people should not use these medicines at all.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Safety is individual: a prescriber checks your history, medicines and pregnancy plans before any GLP-1 treatment starts.
  • Serious side effects are uncommon, but severe stomach pain, upper right abdominal pain or throat swelling need medical help straight away.
  • Severe vomiting or diarrhoea can cause dehydration, which is the main indirect strain on the kidneys.
  • Regulators reviewed mood and suicidal-thought concerns and found no causal link, but tell your prescriber about any history of depression.
  • Never buy GLP-1 pens from anyone offering to supply without a consultation or prescription.
In this guide

01 · The core answer

Is it safe for me to use GLP-1 for weight loss?

It is safe enough to prescribe when a clinician has checked that you are not in one of the groups who should avoid it and you know what to watch for. That is why these medicines are prescription-only. Safety is a judgement about you, not a blanket yes or no.

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is the worked example here. It is a once-weekly injection made by Eli Lilly, licensed in the UK for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1 It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, and individual results vary.

The broader category question is covered in our pages on whether GLP-1 medicines are safe to use and weight loss injections more generally.

02 · Weighing it up

Is GLP-1 worth the risk?

Whether it is worth it comes down to what the medicine can do for you against what could go wrong for you. Neither side is the same for everyone.

On the benefit side, in the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 These are trial averages, and individual results vary. In trials, weight loss also came with average improvements in waist size, blood pressure, cholesterol and blood-sugar measures.2 These are trial-average secondary outcomes, not promises.

On the risk side, there are digestive side effects, a short list of serious but uncommon problems, and some groups for whom treatment is unsuitable.

03 · Your next step

Should I take GLP-1 for weight loss?

That is a decision to make with a prescriber, because it depends on your health, your goals and what you have already tried. Two practical questions help. Do you meet the licensed criteria? And can you commit to the diet, activity and follow-up that treatment is designed to sit alongside?

If the answer is yes to both, a free online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber is a sensible way to find out. You can see current options on our weight loss clinic page.

04 · Who should avoid GLP-1

Who should avoid GLP-1 medicines?

Some people should not use them at all, and others need extra care. Using Mounjaro as the worked example, you should not take it if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, and it should not be used during pregnancy or while trying to conceive.1 Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. If you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly.

Your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems.1 Always share your full medical history and medicine list during consultation.13

That last point matters more than it sounds. Safety problems usually arise when something relevant is left out, such as a past gallbladder issue or another medicine you take. A good consultation is a safety check, not a formality.

Medicines you already take can also matter. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines because of the risk of low blood sugar. For antidepressants, see our guide to taking Mounjaro with sertraline.

05 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects and when to get help

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for the following warning signs.13

  • Severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting, which could be pancreatitis: stop using Mounjaro and get medical help straight away.
  • Pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of the skin or eyes, which could be gallbladder problems: get medical help straight away.
  • Signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing: get medical help straight away.

If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar: shakiness, sweating and confusion. Your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.13

Do not wait for a scheduled review if any of these appear. For less urgent new symptoms, contact your prescribing team. You can also report any suspected side effect through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19

06 · Digestive effects and dehydration

Kidneys, liver and dehydration

The medicine is not known to damage the kidneys or liver directly, and no dose adjustment is needed for mild to moderate kidney or liver impairment.1 The practical risk is indirect. Severe vomiting or diarrhoea can cause dehydration, which can strain the kidneys.

The sensible response is simple. Keep fluids up, and get medical help straight away if you cannot keep fluids down, as dehydration can strain the kidneys. People with severe kidney or liver impairment need individual assessment by a prescriber.1

This is also why the reviews that come with treatment matter. If digestive side effects are troublesome, your prescriber can advise on the dose and on what to do next, rather than leaving you to push through. Our guide on how to use GLP-1 medicines for weight loss covers day-to-day practicalities.

07 · Thyroid questions

What about thyroid cancer warnings?

The warning comes from animal studies, and it has not been shown in people. In rodent studies tirzepatide caused thyroid C-cell tumours; it is not known whether this applies to humans, and no increase has been shown in human trials.1

As a precaution, tell your prescriber if you or a close relative have had medullary thyroid cancer or the inherited condition MEN 2. They will weigh this in your assessment. Routine thyroid monitoring is not required for most people.1

In practice, this means a family history question is part of your consultation. It is a screening step, not a reason for most people to worry.

08 · Mood and mental health

Do GLP-1 medicines affect mood?

Regulators have looked at this directly. The EMA's safety committee reviewed the evidence and concluded in 2024 that it does not support a causal link between GLP-1 medicines and low mood or suicidal thoughts, and the MHRA keeps this under continuous review.17

If you have thoughts of harming yourself or ending your life, get help straight away. Call 999 or go to A&E if you are in immediate danger. In England you can call NHS 111 and choose the mental health option, any time. You can also call Samaritans free on 116 123, day or night. Tell your prescriber about any change in your mood while taking Mounjaro.

That said, any big change in weight, appetite and routine can affect how you feel. Tell your prescriber about any history of depression. Seek help promptly if your mood drops or you have distressing thoughts during treatment.

09 · Results, belly fat and quick fixes

Belly fat, three-month results and quick fixes

The trial results are over long periods: SURMOUNT-1 ran for 72 weeks, and people on higher doses lost more on average.2 Trial averages do not predict your own result.

Dramatic weight-loss claims, especially those attached to a supplement or a single drink, are a warning sign rather than a shortcut. Low-cost supplements have no clinical oversight, and their dosing is not standardised.

Safety here is partly about expectations. A medicine with documented results that works alongside lifestyle change is a different proposition from a product promising effortless loss.

10 · Stopping and long-term use

What happens when you stop?

Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system. There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1 Mounjaro manages weight; it does not cure the biology behind it. In SURMOUNT-4, people who stopped tirzepatide after 36 weeks regained on average 14% of body weight over the following year, while those who continued treatment lost a further 5.5% on average.

Because treatment is meant to be reviewed, stopping is a conversation to have with your prescriber rather than a decision to make alone. Our aftercare includes ongoing monthly reviews, dose-titration and follow-up assessments by the prescribing team, plus side-effect support.

11 · Safe supply and NHS access

Getting GLP-1 treatment safely in the UK

The safest route is a regulated one, with a consultation and a prescription. A genuine product from a registered pharmacy removes a whole category of risk. Never buy pens from a seller offering to supply without a consultation or prescription, and check any pharmacy on the GPhC register. Ours is registration 9012878.

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).4 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.

Tablets exist too. If you are weighing an oral option, our page on oral GLP-1 weight loss explains how they differ.

12 · How our service handles safety

How our service builds in safety checks

Our process is built around review before supply. The free online consultation is a short health questionnaire with no charge and no obligation. It is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, not a scoring script. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full.

Mounjaro comes through official LillyDirect supply, direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution, as genuine KwikPens. Delivery is free, next-day and tracked in temperature-controlled packaging, and needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance come with every order. Repeat orders re-check suitability, with no auto-shipping.

Once in use, a pen can be kept out of the fridge at a temperature not above 30°C for up to 30 days after first use; unopened pens are kept in the fridge until first use.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Is GLP-1 worth the risk?
For many suitable adults, a prescriber-supervised licensed GLP-1 medicine can be worthwhile, but that depends on your own history. Trials show substantial average weight loss alongside diet and activity, while serious side effects are uncommon. Some people should avoid treatment entirely, so a consultation is the way to weigh benefit against risk for you.
Who should avoid GLP-1?
Using Mounjaro as the example, avoid it if you are allergic to tirzepatide or its ingredients, or if you are pregnant or trying to conceive. Extra care, or advice against treatment, applies with a history of pancreatitis, severe gut disease, diabetic retinopathy or gallbladder problems. Share your full medical history and medicines with the prescriber.
Should I take GLP-1 for weight loss?
That is a decision for you and a prescriber. These medicines are licensed for weight management in adults and work alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. A free online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber will check whether you meet the criteria and whether treatment is suitable for you.
Will I lose my belly fat on GLP-1?
In trials, waist size improved on average alongside blood pressure, cholesterol and blood-sugar measures. These are trial averages, not promises, and individual results vary.
How much weight can you lose on GLP-1 in 3 months?
Three months in, most people are still on the lower rungs of the dose ladder, so trial-average losses at this stage are modest compared with the headline figures: in SURMOUNT-1, average weight loss built month by month, with the full 15–21% averages measured at 72 weeks, not 12. A sensible 3-month expectation on a standard titration is mid single digits as a percentage of body weight, with wide individual variation. Slower early progress does not predict failure — the dose you respond to may still be ahead of you.
What kills belly fat the most?
No single food, drink or trick is an established fat-burner. In trials, weight management medicine used with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity improved waist size on average. Be wary of supplements making dramatic weight-loss claims, as they come with no clinical oversight.
What drink burns the most belly fat?
No drink is an established way to burn belly fat. Claims about drinks and so-called natural alternatives to prescription medicines are marketing, and supplement dosing is not standardised. Staying hydrated does matter on GLP-1 treatment, because severe vomiting or diarrhoea can cause dehydration that strains the kidneys.
What is the Japanese trick to losing weight?
There is no established Japanese trick supported by evidence, and relying on one is not recommended. Sustainable weight management combines a reduced-calorie diet, increased physical activity and, where suitable, a licensed medicine prescribed after a proper consultation. Dramatic weight-loss claims should be treated with caution.
