Is It Dangerous to Get Pregnant on Mounjaro? (October 2026)

Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, so conceiving while taking it needs action straight away. Stop the medicine and tell your prescriber as soon as you know you are pregnant, and stop it at least one month before trying to conceive.1 Mounjaro can reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed: switch to a non-oral method, or add a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting and for 4 weeks after each dose increase. Information current as of October 2026.

In this guide

01 · The short answer

Is it dangerous to get pregnant on Mounjaro?

The prescribing information says Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, so continuing it after conception is not appropriate.1 If you find out you are pregnant, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly. Do not wait for your next scheduled review.

Stopping and speaking to a clinician is the correct step, and your prescriber or GP can guide what happens next. For more on this situation, see our guide on what happens if you get pregnant on Mounjaro.

03 · Contraception on Mounjaro

Contraception while taking Mounjaro

Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which can reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed.1 The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method such as condoms, for 4 weeks after starting and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.1

This applies to the pill only. Implants, coils and injections are unaffected.7 Because the dose rises step by step, each increase restarts that 4-week window. See also our guide to whether you can get pregnant on Mounjaro.

04 · Planning a pregnancy

Planning a pregnancy after Mounjaro

If you want to conceive, stop Mounjaro at least one month before trying.1 Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear the system. There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1

Discuss your timing with your prescriber, who can also talk through what stopping means for your weight plan.

05 · PCOS, periods and fertility

PCOS, periods and fertility

Mounjaro is not licensed specifically for PCOS, but many women with PCOS meet the licensed weight-management criteria. Weight loss is a first-line recommendation that can improve insulin resistance, cycles and symptoms.1

Improving weight can restore ovulation, which is why contraception matters even if your periods were previously irregular. Mention PCOS and any fertility plans in your consultation. See also whether Mounjaro can help you get pregnant.

06 · Breastfeeding and eligibility

Breastfeeding and eligibility

Current prescribing information indicates minimal transfer of tirzepatide into breast milk. Discuss breastfeeding with your prescriber so the decision reflects your circumstances.1

Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 to 30 with a weight-related condition. A prescriber assesses your history and medicines first.1 If you have already conceived, see what others should know after falling pregnant on Mounjaro. Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

07 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Can I get pregnant while on Mounjaro?
Yes, pregnancy is still possible, and Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy. Mounjaro can also reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed, so switch to a non-oral method, or add a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting and for 4 weeks after each dose increase. If you become pregnant, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly.
What happens if you accidentally get pregnant on a GLP-1 medicine like Mounjaro?
Stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly. Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy. Your prescriber or GP can then advise on next steps.
Does Mounjaro affect egg quality?
The UK leaflet does not list an effect on egg quality. Mounjaro must not be used in pregnancy and should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. Discuss fertility plans with your prescriber.
Does Mounjaro mess with your period?
Weight loss can improve cycles and symptoms in women with PCOS, and improving weight can restore ovulation, so contraception still matters. Discuss any new or unexpected changes with your prescriber.
How long before trying to conceive should I stop Mounjaro?
Stop at least one month before trying to conceive. Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so it takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear the system after a final dose. Nothing needs doing while it clears, and it cannot be sped up.
Does Mounjaro make the contraceptive pill less effective?
It can. Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which can reduce pill absorption. Switch to a non-oral method or add a barrier method (such as condoms) for 4 weeks after starting and for 4 weeks after each dose increase. Implants, coils and injections are unaffected.
Is Mounjaro safe while breastfeeding?
Current prescribing information indicates minimal transfer of tirzepatide into breast milk. Even so, discuss breastfeeding with your prescriber so the decision reflects your circumstances before starting or continuing treatment.
