Is GLP-1 Over the Counter in the UK? (October 2026)

No, GLP-1 weight-loss medicines are not available over the counter in the UK. Mounjaro is prescription-only and supplied after a consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.1 The newly licensed GLP-1 tablets are prescription-only too.20 Anything on a shelf or website claiming to be a "natural GLP-1" is a supplement, not a medicine.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • No GLP-1 medicine licensed for weight loss in the UK can be bought over the counter; all need a prescriber's assessment.
  • GLP-1 tablets now exist in the UK, but they are prescription-only and are not the same as shop-bought pills.
  • "Natural GLP-1" supplements such as berberine are not medicines and have no comparable trial evidence.
  • Anyone offering GLP-1 injections without a consultation or prescription is a safety red flag.
  • The legitimate route is a free online consultation, with a first 2.5mg Mounjaro pen at £129.99 using code FIRST40.

01 · The answer

Is GLP-1 available over the counter in the UK?

No. Every GLP-1 or GLP-1-based medicine licensed for weight management in the UK is prescription-only. That includes Mounjaro (tirzepatide), which is supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.1 It also includes the two GLP-1 tablets now licensed here.2021

Products you can buy without a prescription do not contain a licensed GLP-1 medicine, and they do not match the evidence behind the prescription treatments. Our wider guide to weight loss medication over the counter covers what is sold on the high street.

If you specifically want to know about tirzepatide, we answer that directly in is Mounjaro available over the counter and can you buy Mounjaro over the counter in the UK.

Product typeOver the counter? What it is
Mounjaro (tirzepatide) injectionNo, prescription-onlyLicensed weekly injection acting on GIP and GLP-1 receptors
Wegovy tablets (oral semaglutide)No, prescription-onlyLicensed daily GLP-1 tablet
Foundayo (orforglipron)No, prescription-onlyLicensed daily GLP-1 tablet from Eli Lilly
Wegovy and Saxenda injectionsNo, assessed by a prescriberLicensed injectable weight-management medicines
"Natural GLP-1" supplements, berberineSold without a prescription, but not medicinesLow-cost supplement, no clinical oversight, no comparable trial evidence

02 · Your decision

What should you do if you want a GLP-1 medicine?

Start with an honest check of whether treatment is suitable for you, then choose between NHS and private routes. The licensed weight-management criteria centre on body mass index (BMI) and weight-related health conditions, and a prescriber confirms those during the consultation.

If you decide on private treatment, our weight loss service begins with a free online consultation, reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber rather than a scoring script. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. Your first Mounjaro 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40; the standard price is £169.99. Prices checked 10 October 2026. You can see the full range on our weight loss clinic page.

03 · Why GLP-1s need a prescription

Why GLP-1 medicines are prescription-only

GLP-1 medicines are prescription-only because they are powerful, with real side effects, and need a clinician to judge whether they suit you. Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly. In the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1

Tirzepatide activates two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin. In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.1

That effect on the stomach and on blood sugar is exactly why a prescriber needs to be involved. Your other medicines, your medical history and your goals all affect whether a GLP-1 medicine is appropriate and which dose to start on. Mounjaro is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, and individual results vary.1

A shelf product cannot do any of this. A pharmacy counter sale has no clinical review, no dose-titration plan and no follow-up. That is the practical reason these medicines sit behind a prescription, rather than any bureaucratic quirk.

04 · GLP-1 tablets in the UK

GLP-1 pills: now licensed, still prescription-only

A GLP-1 pill does exist in the UK now, but it is not an over-the-counter product. Two GLP-1 weight-loss tablets are now licensed in the UK: Wegovy tablets (oral semaglutide, made by Novo Nordisk), approved by the MHRA in June 2026, and Foundayo (orforglipron, made by Eli Lilly), approved in August 2026.2021 They are different medicines from Mounjaro, with their own dosing, eligibility checks and trial results, and both are prescription-only.

The existence of a tablet does not mean you can pick one up with your shopping. Each needs a prescriber to check your suitability, and each has its own routine.

Wegovy tablets. They contain semaglutide, the same active ingredient as the Wegovy injection, taken as one tablet once a day. They are licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 to under 30 with at least one weight-related condition, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity.20 The tablet must be taken on an empty stomach after fasting for at least 8 hours, swallowed whole with a sip of water (up to half a glass, about 120ml), and you then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking or taking other tablets.20

In the OASIS 4 trial, adults taking semaglutide 25mg tablets for 64 weeks lost on average 13.6% of their body weight, compared with 2.2% on placebo. Individual results vary.22 The most common side effects are digestive: nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, indigestion and stomach pain, along with headache and tiredness.22

Foundayo. It contains orforglipron, a once-daily GLP-1 tablet made by Eli Lilly, the maker of Mounjaro. Unlike Wegovy tablets it can be taken at any time of day, with or without food and without water restrictions.21 It is licensed for the same BMI groups as Wegovy tablets. In the ATTAIN-1 trial, people taking the highest dose of orforglipron for 72 weeks lost on average 12.4% of their body weight, compared with 0.9% on placebo.23

Foundayo may make oral contraceptive pills less effective: switch to a non-oral method or add a barrier method for 30 days after starting and for 30 days after each dose increase.21

05 · Tablets versus injection

How do the tablets compare with the Mounjaro injection?

Mounjaro is a once-weekly injection, while Wegovy tablets and Foundayo are once-daily tablets. No trial has compared Mounjaro directly with either tablet, so results from separate trials, with different people, durations and doses, should not be set against each other as if they were head to head.15 SURMOUNT-5 is the trial that compared tirzepatide directly with injected semaglutide.15

The practical differences matter as much as the averages. Wegovy tablets need a strict empty-stomach routine every morning, Foundayo has no food or water rules, and Mounjaro needs an injection once a week. A prescriber will check which option is suitable for your health, your other medicines and your routine.

In SURMOUNT-5, adults on tirzepatide lost on average 20.2% of body weight over 72 weeks versus 13.7% on semaglutide 2.4mg (Wegovy). Both are effective, licensed treatments; which suits you depends on your health profile, tolerance and prescriber advice, not the headline number alone.15

There is no tablet form of Mounjaro. Tirzepatide is injection-only in the UK.1 If you prefer to avoid injections, say so in your consultation; the prescriber can discuss what is appropriate for you.

06 · Natural GLP-1 supplements

Do "natural GLP-1" supplements work?

Not in the way the marketing suggests. "Natural GLP-1" supplements, such as berberine, are not medicines, are not regulated for this use and have no comparable trial evidence to the licensed treatments.20 They are the only things you can genuinely buy without a prescription under a "GLP-1" label.

The nickname is a marketing phrase, usually attached to berberine. It is a low-cost supplement with no clinical oversight, and it is not a cheaper version of a prescription medicine. Dosing is not standardised.

Supplement sellers often make dramatic weight-loss claims. Treat any promise of dramatic results as a warning sign. A licensed medicine is judged on published trials that report average results and side effects honestly; supplements cannot show that.

If you want to understand what is sold on the shelf, our guides on over-the-counter appetite suppressants and the Mounjaro over the counter alternative compare these options plainly.

07 · Strongest over-the-counter pill

Is there an over-the-counter weight loss pill that works like a GLP-1?

No over-the-counter pill comes close to the licensed GLP-1 medicines for average weight loss, and none works through GLP-1. Over-the-counter products work differently, and the effects are far smaller than those seen in the trials of prescription treatments.

Orlistat is a licensed tablet that works by a different route: it blocks some dietary fat absorption and produces smaller average losses. It is a recognised option, but it is not a GLP-1 medicine and does not reduce appetite in the same way.

When comparing, keep these questions in mind:

  • Is the product a licensed medicine, or a supplement?
  • Does it have a published trial with named results, or only marketing claims?
  • Does anyone review your health, other medicines and side effects?
  • Is there a plan for what happens when you stop?

Licensed prescription medicines can answer yes to all four. Shelf products usually cannot. If you want an over-the-counter route for a modest goal, speak to a pharmacist, who can tell you what is suitable alongside your existing medicines.

08 · Mounjaro and the NHS

What about getting a GLP-1 on the NHS?

The NHS route is real, and it is the closest thing to "no charge" for the medicine itself. Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).46

Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting. Your GP is the place to ask where you sit in the local pathway. NHS access to Wegovy runs through specialist weight-management services; ask your GP.

If you are asking when tirzepatide might become a shelf product, our page on when Mounjaro might be available over the counter explains why that is not something to wait for.

09 · Avoiding unsafe sellers

How to avoid unsafe "over the counter" GLP-1 sellers

Be wary of anyone offering GLP-1 injections without a consultation or prescription. Those are exactly where counterfeit and mislabelled products circulate. The MHRA publishes counterfeit medicine alerts and runs the Yellow Card scheme for reporting suspected problems.7

Mounjaro must not be combined with other GLP-1 medicines, unlicensed "research" peptides (such as retatrutide, which has no UK licence), or compounded copies. These combinations have no safety data and no regulated supply chain. If something promises faster results outside a licensed pathway, that is the warning sign.1

Before buying anywhere, check the following:

  • The seller is a registered pharmacy. You can search the GPhC register; our registration number is GPhC 9012878.12
  • A prescriber reviews your answers before anything is dispensed.
  • The product is a genuine branded pen, supplied through a legitimate chain. Ours is official LillyDirect supply, sourced directly from Eli Lilly's UK distribution.
  • The seller does not promise specific results.

10 · How genuine treatment works

How getting treatment with us works

The process takes a few steps and never involves buying from a shelf:

  • Free online consultation. A short health questionnaire with no charge and no obligation.
  • Prescriber review. A GPhC-registered prescriber reviews your answers. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full.
  • Dispensing and dispatch. Our registered pharmacy dispenses your order, with same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm.
  • Delivery. Free next-day tracked delivery in discreet, temperature-controlled packaging. Saturday delivery is £14.99.

The consultation is free, and the price shown is the price paid. Needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance come with every order, and ongoing monthly reviews, dose-titration and follow-up are handled by the prescribing team. Repeat orders re-check suitability, and there is no auto-shipping. Payment options include Visa/Mastercard, Klarna and pay-monthly plans, with no subscriptions.

Mounjaro comes in strengths from 2.5mg to 15mg, and your prescriber decides where to start and how to step up. You can look at the Mounjaro pen and its prices when you are ready.

11 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Is GLP-1 over the counter in the UK?
No. GLP-1 medicines licensed for weight loss in the UK, including Mounjaro, Wegovy tablets and Foundayo, are prescription-only. They are supplied after a prescriber has reviewed your health information. Supplements marketed as "natural GLP-1" can be bought without a prescription, but they are not medicines and have no comparable trial evidence.
Where can I buy GLP-1 pills in the UK?
Wegovy tablets and Foundayo are licensed in the UK but prescription-only, so they are not sold on shop shelves. You obtain them through a prescriber, either via the NHS where eligible or through a regulated pharmacy.
How much will GLP-1 pills cost in the UK?
Please see the current Wegovy tablet prices on the relevant product page. For comparison, the first 2.5mg Mounjaro injection pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40, and the standard price is £169.99.
What is known as the "poor man's Ozempic"?
The phrase is a marketing nickname, usually attached to berberine supplements. Berberine is not a medicine, is not regulated for weight loss and has no comparable trial evidence to licensed GLP-1 treatments. Ozempic itself is licensed for type 2 diabetes, not weight loss, so the nickname compares two things that are not equivalent.
How can I mimic my GLP-1 naturally?
There is no supplement that reliably copies a GLP-1 medicine. Supplements sold as "natural GLP-1" are not regulated for this use and lack trial evidence. Sensible habits help appetite and health: protein at each meal, vegetables and fibre, regular fluids, and regular activity. For substantial weight loss, speak to a prescriber about licensed options.
Is there an over-the-counter weight loss pill that works like a GLP-1?
No over-the-counter pill matches the licensed prescription medicines for average weight loss. Shelf products work through different routes and give much smaller effects. Orlistat blocks some dietary fat absorption and produces smaller average losses. A pharmacist can advise what is suitable for you; a prescriber can discuss GLP-1 treatment.
What is the cheapest GLP-1?
Cost depends on the medicine, dose and provider, and a cheaper product is only a bargain if it is genuine and prescribed safely. Across the UK pharmacies we track, Mounjaro pens range from £143.96 to £339.00 per month at standard prices, checked 10 October 2026. Avoid unregulated sellers offering suspiciously low prices.
Can I get a GLP-1 on the NHS instead?
Possibly. Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first. Ask your GP where you fit.
