How to Stop Hair Loss on GLP-1 Medicines: A Guide for Women (October 2026)

You cannot switch hair shedding off completely on a GLP-1 medicine, but you can reduce the risk: keep protein and overall nutrition balanced, avoid losing weight faster than your prescriber advises, and keep up resistance exercise. Hair shedding is a recognised side effect that is linked to rapid weight loss itself rather than a direct drug effect, and for most people it settles as weight stabilises.1

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Hair shedding is a recognised, common side effect that is linked to rapid weight loss rather than a direct drug effect.
  • For most people shedding settles as weight stabilises, so it is usually temporary.
  • Protein and balanced nutrition matter most; a very restricted diet works against your hair.
  • Slower, prescriber-guided dose steps can help you avoid the fastest weight loss.
  • See your prescriber or GP if shedding is heavy, patchy, or not settling.
In this guide

01 · The short version

What you can actually do about GLP-1 hair loss

The most useful steps are practical ones: eat enough protein, keep your diet balanced rather than extremely restrictive, keep up resistance exercise, and let your prescriber set the pace of weight loss. Protein intake and overall nutrition matter, which is another reason a reduced-calorie diet should stay balanced.1

Anyone promising to stop it outright is promising more than the evidence supports. What the evidence does support is that the shedding is linked to rapid weight loss itself, that it is described as temporary, and that for most people it settles as weight stabilises.1

If you are a woman noticing more hair in the shower, on your brush or on your pillow, the steps are the same, and the reassurance is the same: for most people this passes.

02 · How likely is it?

How common is hair loss on tirzepatide?

Hair loss is listed among the common side effects of Mounjaro, so it is not rare, but most people do not experience it. In the trials, the figure was this: Hair loss was reported by 4.9% of people taking tirzepatide in the weight-management trials, compared with 1.0% on placebo.1 Individual results vary, and trial averages do not predict your own experience.

That gap between treatment and placebo is a reminder that weight loss, not just the injection, sits behind the shedding. It is also why a slower, steadier approach is sensible, and why your prescriber guides dose steps rather than pushing straight to the highest strength. You can read more in our guide on stopping hair loss on Mounjaro.

03 · Your next step

Is this relevant to you, and what should you do next?

If you have not started treatment, hair shedding should be one item on your list of possible side effects, not a reason to avoid a licensed medicine that suits you. Prepare by planning protein-rich meals and resistance exercise from the start. If you are already treating and noticing shedding, do not stop abruptly or cut your food right back. Instead, talk to your prescriber about your intake and your pace of loss.

If you want to understand whether treatment is right for you, our free online consultation is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, and you can read about the Mounjaro pen. Our wider weight loss clinic page explains the service.

One more honest point: hair shedding is distressing, particularly for women, and the worry itself is valid. Wanting to protect your hair is a reasonable thing to raise at a review. You are not being vain, and a prescriber would rather hear about it than have you quietly stop treatment or under-eat in response.

04 · Why hair sheds

Why hair sheds on GLP-1 treatment

Hair shedding on Mounjaro is a recognised side effect that is temporary for most people and linked to rapid weight loss itself rather than a direct drug effect.1

Think about what changes when you start treatment. Tirzepatide activates two natural gut-hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1, which help regulate appetite and slow how quickly the stomach empties.1 In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals. That is the point of the medicine, and it supports a reduced-calorie diet. But eating much less can leave gaps, so protein intake and overall nutrition matter.

The medicine does not do this to you directly. The risk comes from the combination of fast loss and a thin diet. That is why protein and balance matter, and why a balanced reduced-calorie diet is better than the smallest possible intake.1

It also explains why the shedding is not usually the first thing people notice. Digestive effects such as nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort are the most common effects, while hair shedding appears among the common ones.13 Side effects such as these tend to appear in the first days after a dose change and settle as the body adapts.

If you want to dig into the timeline question, our page on whether Mounjaro hair loss is temporary goes deeper.

Understanding the cause changes how you respond. You are not trying to counteract a toxin. You are trying to keep your body well supplied while it loses weight, and to avoid a pace of loss that is faster than it needs to be.

05 · Protein and nutrition

Protein and nutrition: the main lever you control

Protein intake and overall nutrition matter, so they are where to put your effort.1 The practical difficulty is that the medicine reduces appetite, so it is easy to drift into skipping meals or eating only small snacks. That is the pattern to watch for.

Make each meal count. Build meals around a protein source first, such as eggs, fish, poultry, lean meat, dairy, pulses or tofu, then add vegetables and whole grains.

Because you will feel full sooner, eating slowly and stopping at the first feeling of fullness is sensible advice for managing nausea and digestive effects, along with favouring plain lower-fat foods while you adjust.1 The tension is obvious: you are told to stop when full, yet you also need enough protein. The answer is to put protein on the plate first, so the small amount you eat is the most useful part.

Foods that support a balanced diet

What a varied diet does is avoid shortfalls. Eggs, fish, meat, dairy, beans, lentils, nuts, seeds, leafy vegetables and fruit all contribute protein and other nutrients. Aim for variety rather than any single food.

Hydration and gut health

Staying well hydrated helps with nausea and constipation, which are both common on treatment.1 Constipation in particular is made worse when people eat and drink less, and fibre from vegetables and whole grains, fluids and daily movement help. These are not hair treatments, but a body that is comfortable and well fed is better placed to eat enough.

What to avoid

Avoid crash dieting on top of the medicine. Cutting food to the bare minimum because your appetite is already low, or because you want faster results, is the situation most likely to leave you short of protein. The medicine is licensed for use alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.13

If you struggle to eat enough, say so at your monthly review. That is exactly the kind of thing the aftercare team is there for. You can also read our related guide on what to take to stop hair loss on Mounjaro for how nutrition and supplements fit together.

06 · Pace of weight loss

Pace of weight loss and your dose ladder

Because the shedding is linked to rapid weight loss, the pace of your loss is the second lever. The counter-measures that protect lean mass include adequate protein, resistance exercise and a loss pace guided by your prescriber rather than maximum speed.1

Mounjaro is built around a gradual ladder. Everyone starts on 2.5mg once a week, and this starting dose is about letting your body adjust, not about weight loss itself. After at least four weeks the dose increases to 5mg, and can then step up by 2.5mg at minimum four-week intervals (7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg) up to a maximum of 15mg weekly, depending on how you respond and tolerate it.1 Many people settle at 5mg, 10mg or 15mg. Higher is not automatically better, and your prescriber will guide the right pace.

This matters for hair because there is no prize for climbing the ladder as fast as the minimum interval allows. If a new dose is hard to tolerate, prescribers can hold the current dose longer before stepping up.1 The same flexibility is available if your weight is falling quickly and you are worried about your hair or your eating. Raise it, and ask whether holding your dose for longer would suit you.

What this does not mean

It does not mean you should stop treatment on your own, or skip doses to slow things down. If you miss a dose, there is a clear rule: take it as soon as you can within four days (96 hours) of the scheduled time, then carry on with your usual day. If more than four days have passed, skip the missed dose and take the next one on your normal day.1 Never take two doses within three days (72 hours) of each other.

Changing the dose, or the pace, is a conversation for your prescriber, not a DIY adjustment.

A realistic expectation

Even with a considered pace, some shedding may still occur, and that is not a sign you did anything wrong. The figures show that most people on tirzepatide did not report hair loss, but some did. Pacing and nutrition reduce the odds; they cannot remove them. For a broader look at prevention before it starts, see how to prevent GLP-1 hair loss.

07 · Muscle and exercise

Resistance exercise and protecting lean mass

Resistance exercise is one of the counter-measures for protecting lean mass during significant weight loss, alongside adequate protein and a prescriber-guided pace.1 It is not a hair treatment in itself, but it works on the same underlying problem: losing weight in a way that your body copes with well.

The so-called "Ozempic face" is a useful comparison. It is not a drug effect. It is what losing a significant amount of weight quickly can do to facial volume, on any method including diet or surgery. The same applies to loose skin, which commonly adapts gradually after weight stabilises.1 Hair shedding belongs in the same family of effects: they follow from the speed and scale of weight change, and the remedy is steadiness, not panic.

Starting where you are

You do not need a gym membership. Bodyweight exercises, resistance bands, free weights and carrying shopping all count as resistance work. If you are new to exercise, begin gently and build up. Fatigue is a recognised common side effect, most noticeable in the first weeks and after dose increases, and for most people energy returns to normal within a few weeks.1 Keep gentle activity going while energy is low, and add resistance sessions as you feel able.

If tiredness is severe or is not settling, tell your clinical team. Low energy combined with low food intake is a situation where hair, mood and strength can all suffer together, so it is worth acting early.

Why it fits the hair question

Women researching hair loss often focus only on the scalp. The more useful view is whole-body: protect muscle, eat enough protein, and lose weight at a pace you can sustain. Whatever shedding remains is, for most people, temporary.

Combine with sensible habits

Keep a regular meal pattern, drink water through the day, and avoid lying down straight after eating, which helps with reflux and nausea.1 Comfortable digestion makes it far easier to eat the balanced meals your hair needs. You can track doses, weight and symptoms with our free GLPTrackr companion app, which is available for iOS and Android, so you have a clear record to share with your prescriber at reviews.

08 · Supplements and products

Supplements, shampoos and "hair vitamins": an honest view

People often ask what the best supplement is for hair loss caused by a GLP-1 medicine. The honest answer is that no supplement is known to prevent or reverse this shedding.

Hair vitamins and low-cost supplements are widely marketed and available without any assessment. That convenience cuts both ways. A product that is easy to buy comes with no clinical oversight, dosing is not standardised, and it cannot tell you why you are shedding. Dramatic hair-regrowth claims on packaging or social media should be treated with caution.

Food first

Because protein intake and overall nutrition matter, a food-first approach is the best-supported place to begin.1 If you are struggling to eat enough, the better fix is to address the eating, with help from your clinical team or a dietitian.

Talk before you add anything

If you do want to take a supplement, ask a pharmacist or your prescriber first, especially if you take other medicines. Some products interact with other treatments, and more is not better.

Shampoos, serums and treatments

The same principle applies to topical products. Gentle hair care, such as avoiding tight hairstyles and excessive heat, is common sense.

If your hair loss looks different from general shedding, for example distinct bald patches, a widening parting that began before treatment, or scalp symptoms, see your GP or pharmacist. Those patterns may have causes unrelated to your medicine. Our pharmacy also offers hair loss treatments through a separate consultation, which is a different question from shedding that follows weight loss.

Report what you notice

If you experience a side effect, you can report it through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19 Reporting helps regulators monitor medicines. For the full picture on this topic, our guide on what to take to stop hair loss on Mounjaro covers the same ground from a Mounjaro angle.

09 · Will it grow back?

Will hair grow back, and how long does it take?

For most people, yes. Hair shedding settles for most people as weight stabilises.1

Hair also grows slowly, so visible thickening tends to lag well behind the point at which the shedding stops. Expect to wait, and judge progress over a long period rather than week to week.

What "stabilising" looks like

Weight tends to stabilise once you reach a maintenance dose and your intake settles. Many people settle at a maintenance dose of 5mg, 10mg or 15mg.1 Your prescriber will guide this. In the trials that supported the licence, treatment ran for long periods, such as 72 weeks in SURMOUNT-1, so weight change is gradual and continues for a long time for many people.2 That does not mean shedding continues for that whole time, only that the pace of loss slows as you approach your own plateau.

Should I stop the medicine?

Do not stop on your own because of shedding. Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system, and there is no way to speed this up.1 Stopping will not immediately change your hair, and it ends the treatment you started for good reasons. If the shedding is distressing, discuss options with your prescriber, including pace and nutrition.

When regrowth does not come

If shedding does not settle once your weight has stabilised, or if it is heavy or patchy, see your GP or prescriber. Other causes of hair loss exist and are worth ruling out. For a deeper look, read whether hair loss from GLP-1 is permanent, and our overview of how to stop Mounjaro hair loss as a woman.

Patience is genuinely part of the answer. The honest message is reassuring but unspectacular: for most people the shedding is temporary, the best action is to protect nutrition while weight settles, and regrowth takes time.

10 · Other effects to watch

Other effects to watch alongside hair shedding

Hair shedding rarely arrives alone, and noticing the wider picture helps you and your prescriber judge how well treatment is going. Most side effects are digestive: nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort are the most common, while indigestion, reduced appetite, dizziness, reflux, burping, hair shedding and injection-site reactions are common.1 Side effects are most likely when starting or moving up a dose, and for most people they ease within days to a few weeks.

Nausea and eating enough

Nausea matters for your hair indirectly. If nausea stops you eating protein, you are more exposed to the nutrition shortfall behind shedding. Practical steps include eating smaller meals slowly, stopping at the first feeling of fullness, favouring plain lower-fat foods while adjusting, staying hydrated and avoiding lying down after eating. If nausea or vomiting is persistent or you cannot keep fluids down, contact your clinical team — dehydration needs prompt attention.1

Mood and wellbeing

Visible changes such as shedding hair can affect how you feel. Regulators have looked specifically at whether GLP-1 medicines are linked to low mood or suicidal thoughts. The EMA's safety committee reviewed the evidence and concluded in 2024 that it does not support a causal link, and the MHRA keeps this under continuous review.17 Even so, big changes in weight, appetite and routine can affect how you feel. Tell your prescriber about any history of depression, and seek help promptly if your mood drops or you have distressing thoughts during treatment.

If you have thoughts of harming yourself or ending your life, get help straight away. Call 999 or go to A&E if you are in immediate danger. In England you can call NHS 111 and choose the mental health option, any time. You can also call Samaritans free on 116 123, day or night. Tell your prescriber about any change in your mood while taking Mounjaro.

Serious effects are different

Hair shedding is not an emergency. Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting; pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin or eyes; or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. Seek immediate medical help for those.1 If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea, watch for low blood sugar and let your prescriber adjust those medicines.

Reporting

You can report any suspected side effect through the Yellow Card scheme, run by the MHRA.19

11 · Getting support with us

Getting treatment and support through EverydayMeds

Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, and individual results vary.1 If you are weighing up treatment and hair is a worry, you can discuss that during the consultation.

NHS or private?

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.46 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.

How ordering works

First, you complete a free online consultation, a short health questionnaire with no charge and no obligation. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. Then our registered pharmacy dispenses it, with same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm, and delivery is free next-day tracked in temperature-controlled, discreet packaging. Saturday delivery is £14.99.

Our supply is official LillyDirect supply, sourced directly from Eli Lilly's UK distribution, with genuine KwikPens.

Aftercare that suits hair worries

Ongoing monthly clinical reviews, dose titration and follow-up assessments by the prescribing team are part of the service, along with side-effect support. That is where to raise shedding, appetite and your pace of loss. Repeat orders re-check suitability, and there is no auto-shipping, so your prescriber can slow or hold your dose when that is appropriate.

Support is available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, by email at support@everydaymeds.co.uk, through the account portal chat, or by phone on 0333 207 0413. We are a GPhC-registered pharmacy, number 9012878. Mounjaro pens should be stored in the fridge at 2–8°C, never frozen, and once in use can be kept not above 30°C for up to 30 days.1

12 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
How to stop hair loss on GLP-1 as a woman?
You cannot promise to stop it, but you can lower the risk. Keep protein and overall nutrition balanced, avoid a very restricted diet, keep up resistance exercise, and let your prescriber guide the pace of weight loss and dose steps. Hair shedding is linked to rapid weight loss itself rather than a direct drug effect, and for most people it settles as weight stabilises. If it is heavy or not settling, speak to your prescriber or GP.
Will hair grow back after a GLP-1?
For most people, yes. Hair shedding settles for most people as weight stabilises. Hair grows slowly, so visible improvement tends to lag behind the point where shedding eases. If shedding continues after your weight has settled, or looks patchy, see your GP or prescriber to check for other causes.
How to prevent hair loss on semaglutide as a woman?
For the GLP-1 class generally, the sensible steps match those for Mounjaro: eat enough protein, keep your diet balanced, keep up resistance exercise and avoid the fastest possible weight loss. Ask your prescriber, who can advise on your specific medicine and pace, and report any side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.
What is the best supplement for hair loss due to GLP-1?
Supplements are available cheaply without assessment, dosing is not standardised, and they come with no clinical oversight. A food-first approach built around protein and balanced nutrition is the best-supported route. If you want to take a supplement anyway, check with a pharmacist or your prescriber first, particularly if you take other medicines.
How to thicken your hair after weight loss?
No method is known to thicken hair on a GLP-1. What supports your hair is the same as what supports the rest of you: adequate protein, balanced nutrition, resistance exercise and a steady pace of loss. For most people shedding settles as weight stabilises, and hair then regrows slowly. Be wary of products making dramatic claims, and see your GP if you have patchy loss or scalp symptoms, since other causes can exist.
How long after weight loss does hair grow back?
Shedding settles for most people as weight stabilises, and regrowth follows after that. Because hair grows slowly, it can take a long time before you see a visible difference. Judge progress over an extended period rather than week to week, and speak to your prescriber if shedding has not eased once your weight has settled.
What foods help thicken hair?
Protein intake and overall nutrition matter. A varied diet with protein at every meal, such as eggs, fish, poultry, dairy, pulses or tofu, plus vegetables and whole grains, helps avoid shortfalls. Because Mounjaro reduces appetite, put protein on the plate first so the smaller amount you eat counts.
Should I stop Mounjaro if my hair is falling out?
Do not stop on your own. Hair shedding is a recognised common side effect linked to rapid weight loss, and for most people it settles as weight stabilises. Tirzepatide takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system after a final dose, so stopping will not quickly change your hair. Instead, talk to your prescriber about your protein intake and whether holding your dose for longer would suit you.
Can you reverse hair thinning naturally?
The shedding linked to GLP-1 treatment is described as temporary and settles for most people as weight stabilises, so improvement often happens without any special product. You can support it by eating enough protein, keeping nutrition balanced, exercising and pacing weight loss. If thinning is patchy, began before treatment or comes with scalp symptoms, see your GP or pharmacist, because it may have a different cause.
How common is hair loss on Mounjaro?
Hair shedding is listed among the common side effects, but most people do not report it. In the weight-management trials, hair loss was reported by 4.9% of people taking tirzepatide, compared with 1.0% on placebo. Trial averages do not predict your own experience, and individual results vary. If you notice shedding, raise it at your monthly review so your prescriber can look at your nutrition and pace.
