How to Reverse Mounjaro Hair Loss (October 2026)

You cannot force hair back overnight, but Mounjaro hair shedding is temporary and usually settles as your weight stabilises. It is linked to rapid weight loss itself rather than a direct drug effect, so the practical steps are adequate protein, balanced nutrition and a loss pace your prescriber is comfortable with.1 Persistent or heavy shedding deserves a conversation with your prescriber.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Hair shedding is a recognised side effect, linked to rapid weight loss itself rather than a direct drug effect, and it usually settles as weight stabilises.
  • Protein and balanced nutrition are the most useful things you can control while eating less.
  • Speed matters: a loss pace guided by your prescriber, not maximum speed, is kinder to hair and lean mass.
  • Do not stretch, skip or alter doses on your own to protect your hair; talk to your clinical team instead.
  • Shedding that is severe, patchy or not settling should be checked, as other causes of hair loss exist.
In this guide

01 · The short answer

Can Mounjaro hair loss be reversed?

For most people, yes: the shedding is temporary and settles as weight stabilises. Hair shedding is a recognised side effect that is linked to rapid weight loss itself rather than a direct drug effect.113 That framing matters, because it tells you where to act. You are not trying to counteract a toxin in your follicles. You are trying to support your body through a period of fast change.

Hair loss was reported by 4.9% of people taking tirzepatide in the weight-management trials, compared with 1.0% on placebo.1 So it is a minority experience, but a real one, and it is more common on treatment than on placebo. Our guide on whether Mounjaro hair loss is temporary goes into the timeline question in more detail, and the broader picture is covered in our GLP-1 hair loss overview.

02 · What to do

What actually helps hair recover

The levers are the ones within your control: what you eat, how fast you lose, and how you manage your treatment with your prescriber.

ApproachWhat it doesStatus
Keep protein intake upSupports lean mass and overall nutrition while appetite is lowSupported: protein and overall nutrition matter for hair shedding1
Keep the reduced-calorie diet balancedAvoids stacking nutritional shortfalls on top of fast weight lossSupported: the diet should stay balanced1

Over-the-counter supplementsLow-cost supplement, no clinical oversight, dosing is not standardisedTalk to a pharmacist first
Stretching doses or skipping themUnlicensed, with no safety dataNot advised — talk to your clinical team instead

03 · Your next step

Is this relevant to you, and what next?

If you are already on treatment and noticing more hair in the shower or on your brush, the next step is to tell your clinical team, review your protein and meals, and ask whether your pace of loss and current dose are right. Our prescribing team offers ongoing monthly reviews and side-effect support for customers, so you do not need to wait for a problem to become severe.

If you are still deciding whether to start, hair shedding is worth knowing about but should be weighed against the whole side-effect profile, which is mostly digestive. For wider context on treatment, see our weight loss clinic page.

Wondering whether stopping is the answer? The shedding is linked to the weight loss rather than the drug directly, so stopping is a decision to make with your prescriber, not a hair-saving shortcut.

04 · Why hair sheds on Mounjaro

Why hair sheds on Mounjaro

Hair shedding on Mounjaro is a recognised side effect, and understanding its cause is the key to reversing it.

Common effects (up to 1 in 10) include indigestion, reduced appetite, dizziness, reflux, burping, hair shedding and injection-site reactions.13 That means most people do not notice significant shedding, but it is more frequent on treatment than on placebo, and it should not be dismissed if it happens to you.

The mechanism of the medicine helps explain the context. Tirzepatide activates two natural gut-hormone receptors at once, GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1 Most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals. That is precisely the point of the treatment, but it also means it is easy to under-eat protein and other nutrients without noticing.

What this means for you: the shedding is generally a response to the pace and the nutritional quality of your weight loss, not a sign that the medicine is damaging your follicles. That is why the practical advice focuses on protein, balanced meals and sensible pace. If you want the timeline discussion, our page on how long hair loss lasts on Mounjaro covers what to expect, and whether Mounjaro hair loss is reversible covers the recovery side.

It also helps to know what hair shedding is not. Hair shedding is not one of the serious side effects. Serious side effects involve severe stomach pain, signs of gallbladder problems or allergic reactions, and need medical help straight away. If you are unsure whether a symptom belongs to either group, ask your clinical team.

05 · Protein and nutrition first

Protein and nutrition: the first thing to fix

The most useful step is to keep your nutrition balanced, with protein in particular. Protein intake and overall nutrition matter, which is another reason the reduced-calorie diet should stay balanced.1

Why is this hard on Mounjaro? Because the medicine makes you feel full sooner, protein-rich foods can feel like too much effort. Practical ideas that fit the general advice for digestive comfort include smaller meals eaten slowly, stopping at the first feeling of fullness and favouring plain lower-fat foods while you adjust.1 Within those limits, build each meal around a protein source first, then add the rest. Easy options include eggs, fish, poultry, dairy, pulses, tofu and similar foods, chosen to suit your tastes and dietary needs.

Hydration also matters. Fluid intake is the first-line step for constipation, and staying well hydrated is part of managing nausea and digestive effects. If nausea or vomiting is persistent or you cannot keep fluids down, contact your clinical team — dehydration needs prompt attention.1

A word on the missing meals problem. If you are skipping meals because you are simply not hungry, try to keep your nutrition balanced. Small, regular, protein-led snacks are often easier than large meals. Fatigue can be part of the same picture: it usually reflects the body adjusting and simply eating less, so keep meals balanced, protein especially, stay hydrated and keep gentle activity going.1

If you are worried your diet is too restricted to be safe, say so at your next review. Our prescribing team can talk through pace and food intake with you, and you can find more preventive habits in our guide to Mounjaro hair loss prevention.

06 · Pace of loss and dose

Pace of weight loss and your dose

Slowing the pace of weight loss, where appropriate, is one of the few levers that addresses the underlying trigger. Because shedding is linked to rapid weight loss itself, a loss pace guided by your prescriber rather than maximum speed is sensible. Adequate protein and resistance exercise are the counter-measures that protect lean mass.1

Everyone starts Mounjaro on 2.5mg once a week. This starting dose is about letting your body adjust, not about weight loss itself. After at least 4 weeks the dose increases to 5mg, and can then step up by 2.5mg at a minimum of 4-week intervals (7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg) up to a maximum of 15mg weekly, depending on how you respond and tolerate it. Many people settle at a maintenance dose of 5mg, 10mg or 15mg — higher is not automatically better, and your prescriber will guide the right pace.1

That last point is useful if you are worried about hair. You do not have to chase the top dose. If your weight is falling quickly and you are noticing shedding, ask your prescriber whether you should hold your current dose rather than step up. Prescribers can hold the current dose longer before stepping up, so speak to your clinical team rather than pushing through severe symptoms.1

What you should not do is adjust things yourself. The missed-dose rule is specific: if you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can within 4 days (96 hours) of the scheduled time, then carry on with your usual day. If more than 4 days have passed, skip the missed dose entirely and take the next one on your normal day — never take two doses within 3 days of each other.1

Our prescribing team handles dose titration and follow-up assessments as part of the ongoing monthly reviews, and repeat orders re-check suitability with no auto-shipping. That structure gives you a natural moment to raise hair concerns before a dose increase rather than after it.

If you are weighing a step down or a pause, our page on whether you can reverse Mounjaro explains what that does and does not mean. For now, the key point is that pace is adjustable through your prescriber, and that is a more controlled route than any do-it-yourself change.

07 · Supplements and remedies

Supplements, shampoos and remedies: an honest view

Supplement dosing is not standardised and supplements carry no clinical oversight, so check with a pharmacist first. Taking something at random could mask a problem that needs proper assessment, or add nothing at all.

If you suspect a nutritional shortfall, the safer route is to ask your prescriber or GP whether any checks are appropriate, rather than self-prescribing. Nutrient deficiencies can contribute to hair loss in general, and eating less can make a shortfall more likely, which is why the guidance emphasises a balanced diet. A pharmacist can also advise on whether an over-the-counter product is suitable alongside your medicines.

On topical products: gentle hair care is reasonable, but be cautious of any product claiming to reverse this type of shedding. Avoid anything that promises rapid regrowth. If you have used hair-loss treatments before, tell your prescriber so your full picture is on record.

What about "natural alternatives" sold as nature's Ozempic, and similar? They are not substitutes for a licensed medicine and they do not address hair shedding. Ozempic itself is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes — it is not a UK weight-loss medicine, and a regulated UK pharmacy will not supply Ozempic for weight loss. Be wary of counterfeits too. The MHRA publishes counterfeit medicine alerts and runs the Yellow Card scheme.7 Be suspicious of any seller offering to supply Mounjaro without a consultation or prescription, and buy only from a registered pharmacy. Ours is GPhC-registered, number 9012878, and supplies genuine KwikPens through official LillyDirect supply.

For a broader list of what people try, our page on a Mounjaro hair loss remedy goes through the options and where the evidence stands.

08 · When to get it checked

When to get hair loss checked

Get your hair loss checked if it is severe, patchy, painful, or not settling as your weight stabilises. Hair loss has many causes, and Mounjaro is only one possible factor. There is no single cause of hair loss that applies to everyone, and a GP can assess the pattern, your history and whether other causes are in play.

Useful things to tell a clinician: when the shedding began relative to starting treatment or a dose increase, how quickly your weight has been falling, how well you are eating, and whether you have had hair loss before. Also mention any other medicines and any new symptoms. This is what the patient information leaflet asks of you generally: discuss new symptoms with your prescriber.13

Reporting is also worthwhile. You can report suspected side effects through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme, which helps regulators monitor safety over time.19 You do not need to be certain the medicine caused the problem to report it.

Separate from hair, know the warning signs that need urgent help. Seek immediate medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing.1 These are uncommon but need medical help straight away, and they are unrelated to hair shedding.

If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1 That is another reason to keep your clinical team informed of changes in eating and weight.

Our support team is available Monday–Friday 9am–5pm at support@everydaymeds.co.uk, through the account portal chat, or on 0333 207 0413. Customers also have ongoing monthly reviews and side-effect support with our prescribing team.

09 · Should you stop Mounjaro?

Should you stop Mounjaro to save your hair?

Stopping Mounjaro is a decision for you and your prescriber, not an automatic fix for hair shedding. Because the shedding is linked to rapid weight loss itself rather than a direct drug effect, removing the medicine does not instantly reverse it, and it also removes the treatment you started for good reasons.1 Mounjaro manages weight; it does not cure the biology behind it. In SURMOUNT-4, people who stopped tirzepatide after 36 weeks regained on average 14% of body weight over the following year, while those who continued treatment lost a further 5.5% on average. Stopping should always be planned with your prescriber, with diet and activity habits ready to carry the load.

If you do stop, the medicine does not vanish at once. Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear the system — there is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1 That fact alone shows why stopping cannot be a quick hair rescue.

A more measured set of options exists before stopping. You can talk to your prescriber about holding your current dose longer, improving protein and overall nutrition, and slowing the pace of loss. These keep the benefits of treatment while addressing the trigger.

Think too about why you are on treatment. Mounjaro is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, and individual results vary.1 Where weight loss supports your health, the decision involves a balance. For some people, mild temporary shedding is an acceptable trade-off; for others it is distressing enough to change plans. Both views are legitimate, and your prescriber should treat them seriously.

If you have a question about switching to another treatment instead, our page on the Wegovy pen sets out that option; remember that hair shedding is linked to rapid weight loss rather than one particular drug, so a switch is not assured to change it in either direction. Ask for a prescriber conversation before acting.

Stopping and restarting also changes the dose ladder: restarts are a prescriber decision. Do not restart at a high dose from leftover pens or from another source. Please talk to us first.

10 · Living with the shedding phase

Coping while your hair recovers

Coping well during the shedding phase is partly practical and partly emotional. Hair changes can feel disproportionately upsetting, particularly alongside other body changes, and it is fair to take that seriously.

On the practical side, handle hair gently, avoid tight styles that pull, and keep up with the nutrition and activity habits that protect lean mass. Losing a significant amount of weight quickly can change facial volume and skin on any method, including diet or surgery, and the counter-measures are adequate protein, resistance exercise and a loss pace guided by your prescriber rather than maximum speed. Skin commonly adapts gradually after weight stabilises.1

On the emotional side, mood deserves attention. Regulators have looked specifically at whether GLP-1 medicines are linked to low mood or suicidal thoughts: the EMA's safety committee reviewed the evidence and concluded in 2024 that it does not support a causal link, and the MHRA keeps this under continuous review.17 That said, any big change in weight, appetite and routine can affect how you feel. Tell your prescriber about any history of depression, and seek help promptly if your mood drops or you have distressing thoughts during treatment.

If you have thoughts of harming yourself or ending your life, get help straight away. Call 999 or go to A&E if you are in immediate danger. In England you can call NHS 111 and choose the mental health option, any time. You can also call Samaritans free on 116 123, day or night. Tell your prescriber about any change in your mood while taking Mounjaro.

Do not suffer in silence about appearance worries. Telling your clinical team about hair shedding helps them judge whether your pace, dose and nutrition are right, and it creates a record you can come back to if shedding continues. Side-effect support is part of our aftercare.

Try keeping a simple log in the free GLPTrackr companion app, available on iOS and Android, noting dose changes, eating patterns and symptoms. Having dates and changes written down makes conversations with a prescriber or GP more productive than trying to remember.

For most people the shedding settles as weight stabilises.1 Regrowth is gradual, so progress is easiest to see over a long stretch rather than week to week. If you are still worried after your weight has levelled off, that is the moment to ask for an assessment rather than wait and wonder.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
How can you reverse Mounjaro hair loss?
Most Mounjaro hair shedding is temporary and settles as weight stabilises, so the focus is on supporting your body rather than a quick fix. Keep protein and overall nutrition balanced, aim for a loss pace your prescriber is comfortable with, keep up resistance exercise, and tell your clinical team if shedding is heavy. Do not alter doses on your own, and avoid products that promise dramatic regrowth.
Is hair loss a side effect of Mounjaro?
Yes. Temporary hair shedding is a recognised side effect, reported as common in trials and linked to rapid weight loss itself rather than a direct drug effect. In the weight-management trials, hair loss was reported by 4.9% of people taking tirzepatide, compared with 1.0% on placebo. Most people do not notice it, and for most it settles as weight stabilises. Report concerns to your prescriber.
How do you reverse GLP-1 hair loss?
The approach is much the same across GLP-1 treatments: support nutrition, particularly protein, avoid unnecessarily rapid weight loss, and speak to the prescriber if shedding is heavy or persistent. For Mounjaro, the shedding is linked to rapid weight loss itself rather than a direct drug effect.
What nutrient deficiencies can contribute to hair loss?
Nutrient shortfalls can contribute to hair loss in general, and eating much less can make them more likely, which is why overall nutrition and protein matter on Mounjaro. Dosing is not standardised and supplements carry no clinical oversight, so check with a pharmacist before taking any. If you are worried, ask your prescriber or GP whether any checks are appropriate.
What to eat to stop hair fall on Mounjaro?
There is no single food that stops hair fall, but a balanced diet with enough protein is the sensible foundation. Build meals around a protein source, add vegetables and whole grains, and eat smaller meals slowly, stopping at the first feeling of fullness. Stay hydrated, and favour plain lower-fat foods if nausea is a problem. A dietitian or your prescriber can tailor this to your needs.
What vegetables are good for hair growth?
A varied diet with plenty of vegetables and whole grains supports overall nutrition and also helps with constipation, a common effect on Mounjaro. Treat vegetables as part of a balanced plate rather than a targeted hair treatment, and pair them with enough protein.
What is the best vitamin to stop hair loss?
We cannot recommend a single best vitamin. Supplements are low-cost and available without assessment, which means no clinical oversight, and dosing is not standardised. If you suspect a deficiency, ask your prescriber, GP or pharmacist whether any checks are appropriate rather than self-prescribing. A balanced diet remains the first step.
What is the number one cause of female hair loss?
There is no single cause that applies to every woman, and hair loss has many possible explanations. On Mounjaro, rapid weight loss itself is linked to temporary shedding. If your hair loss is severe, patchy, or does not settle as your weight stabilises, a GP or your prescriber can assess your pattern and history rather than leaving you to guess.
