A quick overview
What to know
before you start.
-
Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which may be involved in sulfur burps, though this cannot be confirmed in your case.
-
No food, banana or home remedy has been proven to stop sulfur burps.
-
Severe or persistent abdominal pain, repeated vomiting or feeling very unwell needs medical help straight away, not a food swap.
-
You can report any side effect through the Yellow Card scheme, and new symptoms should always be mentioned to your prescriber.

01 · Your next step
What to do about sulfur burps on Mounjaro
Start by noting when the burps happen, then tell your prescriber. Useful details are the day of your injection, your current dose, when you last increased it, and what you ate beforehand. A short note over a week or two gives your prescriber far more to work with than 'I have bad burps'.
Lists of foods to avoid are widely shared online, but none are proven to work, so treat them as things to try rather than fixes.
A sensible, low-risk approach looks like this:
- Keep a simple food and symptom diary. It shows whether the burps follow particular meals, large portions or injection day. This is observation, not treatment.
- Keep taking Mounjaro as prescribed. Do not skip, split or alter doses yourself.
- Contact your prescriber if the burps persist, worsen after a dose step, or come with other symptoms.
- Report the side effect through the Yellow Card scheme19.
If you want a longer walk-through of how this tends to feel over time, our week-by-week sulfur burps guide covers the stages, and our overview of GLP-1 sulfur burps looks at the wider drug class.
02 · Dose
Dose, timing and talking to your prescriber
Dose is the main lever your prescriber has. Everyone starts on 2.5mg weekly, and after at least 4 weeks the dose can rise to 5mg, then by 2.5mg steps at minimum 4-week intervals up to 15mg, depending on response and tolerability1. Those are minimum gaps, not targets.
Higher is not automatically better. Many people settle at 5mg, 10mg or 15mg, and your prescriber guides the pace1. That is a decision for a clinician reviewing you, not something to improvise.
Injection timing does not change how the medicine works. There is no 'best' time of day, and it works the same morning or evening, with or without food1. Many people pick a weekend morning so early side effects fall on days off1. If you want to move your day, leave at least 3 days (72 hours) between doses1.
Already treated with us? Our monthly clinical reviews and side-effect support exist for exactly this. Mounjaro is prescription-only and supplied after a free online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, so you can raise sulfur burps with the same team. New to treatment, or comparing options? See our weight loss treatments or start your free consultation.
03 · Ordering
Getting Mounjaro with side-effect support
Ordering takes three steps:
- Free online consultation. A short health questionnaire, with no charge and no obligation.
- Prescriber review. A GPhC-registered prescriber reviews it. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full.
- Dispensing and delivery. Our registered pharmacy dispenses, with same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm and free next-day tracked delivery in temperature-controlled packaging.
You can compare routes at our main Buy Mounjaro page. Our medicine comes through official LillyDirect supply, so you receive genuine KwikPens direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution.
04 · Why it may happen
Why sulfur burps may happen on Mounjaro
The most plausible link is slower stomach emptying. Tirzepatide activates GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which help regulate appetite and slow how quickly the stomach empties1. Most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals.
Many websites go further and say food sits in the stomach, gut bacteria ferment it, and hydrogen sulphide gas is released. That explanation sounds reasonable, but it is not established, so treat it as a possibility, not a fact.
Mild nausea, altered appetite and tiredness in the first days after each injection are the commonest early effects and usually settle1. Burping is a digestive symptom that people often notice in the same window, around injection day and after dose increases, but you should judge your own pattern with your prescriber. Burping is listed as a common side effect in the UK Mounjaro patient leaflet, affecting up to 1 in 10 people; tell your prescriber about any new or lasting symptom, and you can report suspected side effects through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.
05 · Foods and remedies
What to eat, what to avoid, and what about bananas?
There is no proven food that stops sulfur burps, and no proven food that causes them in everyone.
What not to eat with sulfur burps? Online lists commonly name eggs, red meat, dairy, onions, garlic and cruciferous vegetables, and also fried or very rich meals. These are common suggestions, not tested rules. If you try cutting something, change one thing at a time for a short period and use your diary to see whether anything shifts. If nothing changes, there is no reason to keep restricting a food.
Do bananas help sulfur burps? A banana is a gentle food some people tolerate when their appetite is low, but that is a comfort choice, not a treatment.
What stops sulfur burps immediately? Nothing reliably does, and promises of instant relief should make you cautious. The honest immediate step is to eat and drink without rushing, note what you had, and speak to your prescriber if it keeps happening.
One important point: Mounjaro is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet1. If you start cutting many foods out, you risk under-eating or an unbalanced diet. Keep changes modest, and ask your prescriber before making big dietary shifts.
06 · How long it lasts
How long do sulfur burps last?
There is no reliable timescale for sulfur burps.
Think in patterns instead. Do the burps ease between injections, return after a dose step, or stay constant? A symptom that fades as your body adjusts is a different conversation from one that never improves, and your prescriber will want to know which you have.
If you are weeks in and the burps are not easing, raise it at your next review. Your prescriber can discuss whether to hold your current dose for longer before stepping up. Doses can increase at a minimum of 4-week intervals1, so there is no requirement to rush.
If you stop treatment, tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so it takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear the system, and there is no way to speed this up1. Never stop or change treatment on your own because of one symptom without speaking to your prescriber first. The same applies to the injection routine: if you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can within 4 days (96 hours) of the scheduled time, otherwise skip it1.
07 · Is it serious?
Do sulfur burps mean I am sick or have pancreatitis?
Sulfur burps on their own do not tell you that you have a serious illness, and we cannot diagnose anything from one symptom. Equally, a symptom that is simply unpleasant should not be dismissed if it arrives with other changes.
Get medical help straight away if burping comes with severe or persistent abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, or you feel very unwell. Please do not wait to see whether a diet change helps in those situations. If you are worried about pancreatitis specifically, read our page on pancreatitis and Mounjaro and speak to a clinician.
Sulfur burps and diarrhoea. If both happen together, tell your prescriber, because digestive symptoms in combination are worth a review. If you swing the other way, our page on constipation on Mounjaro may help.
Always report side effects you experience. The MHRA Yellow Card scheme accepts reports from patients as well as professionals19. Tell your prescriber about any new or lasting symptom and report it through the Yellow Card scheme.
08 · Safe habits
Safe habits while you sort it out
Keep the basics of your treatment right so you are not adding variables. Inject once a week on the same day, under the skin of the stomach area (at least 5cm from the belly button), the front of the thigh, or the back of the upper arm if someone else injects. Rotate the site each dose1.
Store pens in a fridge at 2–8°C and never freeze them. Once in use, a pen can stay out of the fridge not above 30°C for up to 30 days, after which it should be discarded1.
Finally, judge progress sensibly. Weight loss on Mounjaro is gradual, and trials measured results at 72 weeks, so think in months2. In SURMOUNT-1, people lost on average 15% of body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone, and individual results vary2. A side effect that makes the medicine hard to live with is worth solving with your prescriber, not just enduring.
09 · Serious side effects
Serious side effects: when to get help straight away
Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1
