How to Get Mounjaro Out of Your Body (Timeline and Next Steps, October 2026)

You cannot flush Mounjaro out faster: tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after your final dose it takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear your system, and nothing needs doing while it does.1 Water, exercise and supplements do not change that timescale. Prices checked 11 October 2026.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Mounjaro (tirzepatide) has a half-life of about five days and takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear after the last dose.
  • There is no way to speed clearance up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.
  • Effects and side effects fade gradually as levels fall, so stopping is a planned conversation with your prescriber, not a detox.
  • Talk to your prescriber before stopping, and before restarting after any gap, because the right restart dose is a clinical decision.
  • Report any new or worrying symptom to your prescriber and through the Yellow Card scheme.
In this guide

01 · The timeline

How long does it take to get Mounjaro out of your system?

It takes roughly 4–5 weeks after your final injection for Mounjaro to clear your system. The active ingredient, tirzepatide, has a half-life of about five days, meaning the amount in your body keeps falling steadily rather than switching off on a set day.1

Because the medicine is taken once a week, you will already have some in your body whenever you take a new dose. After the last injection, the level declines week by week. That is why appetite and side effects change gradually rather than overnight.

02 · Myths

What does not speed Mounjaro out of your body

Nothing you drink, take or do will clear Mounjaro faster; the half-life sets the pace.1 Detox plans, cleanses and supplement stacks therefore have no clinical basis for this purpose, and several carry their own risks because they have no clinical oversight.

Common ideas about clearing Mounjaro:

  • Drinking lots of water. Staying hydrated is sensible, particularly if you have had nausea or sickness, but it does not shorten the 4–5 week clearance.
  • Exercise. Activity supports your health and sits alongside the treatment, but it does not remove the medicine from your body faster.1
  • Supplements marketed as "natural" alternatives. These are low-cost supplements with no clinical oversight. Dosing is not standardised, and they are not a way to clear a prescription medicine.
  • Fasting or cutting food drastically. This is not a route to clearance, and it can make you feel worse. Speak to your prescriber if you struggle to eat.

Anyone online offering a product that "flushes" tirzepatide is selling something the medicine's own product information does not support. Be equally cautious about anyone offering to supply Mounjaro without a consultation or prescription; the MHRA publishes counterfeit medicine alerts and runs the Yellow Card scheme.7

03 · Your decision

Should you stop, pause or carry on?

Whether to stop is a decision to make with your prescriber, because stopping changes how the treatment is working alongside your diet and activity.

  • You are having side effects. Mild nausea, altered appetite and tiredness in the first days after each injection are the commonest early effects and usually settle.1
  • You have reached your goal. Talk through a plan before your final dose, so you know what to expect as the medicine clears.
  • You are not seeing results. If you have lost less than 5% of your starting weight after 6 months on the highest dose you can tolerate, your prescriber will discuss whether continuing or stopping is right for you.1
  • You have had a gap in doses. This is a clinical conversation with your prescriber, not a guess.

If you are a patient with us, our team can help with dose changes, side-effect support and monthly reviews. If you are new, you can start your free consultation, which is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.

04 · Side effects as it clears

How to get rid of Mounjaro side effects

Mounjaro side effects usually ease as your body adjusts, or as the medicine clears if you stop; you cannot clear them faster by any detox. The commonest early effects are mild nausea, altered appetite and tiredness in the first days after each injection, and these usually settle.1

What you can sensibly do is talk to your prescriber. Because tirzepatide stays in your system for roughly 4–5 weeks after a final dose, an effect that began while you were on treatment may continue for some time after the last injection.1 That does not mean something is wrong, but it is worth telling your prescriber about it.

If the problem is dose-related, your prescriber can hold the current dose longer before stepping up.

Report any side effect, especially a new or unexpected one, through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19 If a symptom is severe or you are worried, contact your GP, your prescriber, or NHS 111. For severe, persistent stomach pain, pain in the upper right abdomen with fever or yellowing of the skin or eyes, or swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing, get medical help straight away.

05 · Stopping cold turkey

Can you stop Mounjaro cold turkey?

You can stop at any time, because the medicine clears gradually on its own over roughly 4–5 weeks, but you should tell your prescriber rather than simply disappearing from treatment.1 Stopping is not a medical emergency, and the half-life means there is no sudden drop on the day of your missed injection.

What changes is what the treatment was doing for you. Tirzepatide activates the GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which help regulate appetite and slow how quickly the stomach empties.1 As the medicine clears, that support fades. Some people notice their appetite return gradually over the following weeks.

Your prescriber can discuss what to expect for you, based on your history, dose and goals.

If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea for diabetes, tell your prescriber or diabetes team before you stop, because doses of those medicines may need adjusting when other treatment changes. Do not change them yourself.

06 · Effects of stopping

What are the side effects of stopping Mounjaro?

Mounjaro manages weight; it does not cure the biology behind it, so as the medicine clears, its support for appetite fades.

In SURMOUNT-4, people who stopped tirzepatide after 36 weeks regained on average 14% of body weight over the following year, while those who continued treatment lost a further 5.5% on average.14 Stopping should always be planned with your prescriber, with diet and activity habits ready to carry the load.

If a new symptom appears after stopping, treat it the same way you would on treatment: tell your prescriber and report it via Yellow Card. Do not assume it is caused by the medicine leaving your body, and do not assume it is harmless.

07 · Coming off without regain

How to come off Mounjaro without gaining weight

The honest answer is that no approach is certain to prevent regain, but you can plan the stop with your prescriber and keep the habits the treatment worked alongside. Results vary between people, and trial averages do not predict your own outcome.2 In SURMOUNT-4, people who stopped tirzepatide after 36 weeks regained on average 14% of body weight over the following year, while those who continued treatment lost a further 5.5% on average.14

Practical steps to discuss with your prescriber before your final dose:

  • Choose a plan, not a date at random. Tell your prescriber you want to stop, and ask whether staying on a lower dose is an option within the licence. Many people settle at a maintenance dose of 5mg, 10mg or 15mg, and higher is not automatically better.1
  • Keep your eating pattern in place. The medicine works alongside a reduced-calorie diet, so the routines you built while on treatment are the ones to keep.2
  • Keep up physical activity. It is part of the licensed use of the medicine, not an optional extra.2
  • Judge the trend, not single weigh-ins. Weight naturally moves day to day, and early changes include water weight.1
  • Plan a review. Ask for a follow-up a few weeks after your last injection, once the medicine has had time to clear.

You can track your weight, doses and symptoms with GLPTrackr, our free companion app for iOS and Android, which makes the conversation with your prescriber more specific.

08 · Feeling low afterwards

Why do I feel low after stopping Mounjaro?

Regulators have looked specifically at whether GLP-1 medicines are linked to low mood or suicidal thoughts: the EMA's safety committee reviewed the evidence and concluded in 2024 that it does not support a causal link, and the MHRA keeps this under continuous review.17 Changes in appetite, in how you feel about food and body weight, and in the structure that a weekly routine gave you can all affect mood.

What matters is that you act on it. Tell your prescriber about any history of depression, and seek help promptly if your mood drops or you have distressing thoughts.

If you have thoughts of harming yourself or ending your life, get help straight away. Call 999 or go to A&E if you are in immediate danger. In England you can call NHS 111 and choose the mental health option, any time. You can also call Samaritans free on 116 123, day or night. Tell your prescriber about any change in your mood while taking Mounjaro.

Because tirzepatide takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear, it is also worth telling the prescriber when your last injection was, so they can see how your symptoms fit the timeline.1 Report anything new through the Yellow Card scheme as well.19

09 · Restarting after a break

Is it safe to restart Mounjaro after a 3-week break?

Do not simply resume at your old dose on your own.

For a single missed dose, take it as soon as you can within 4 days (96 hours) of the scheduled time. If more than 4 days have passed, skip the missed dose and take the next one on your normal day, and never take two doses within 3 days of each other.1 That rule is written for one missed dose, not a three-week gap.

Everyone starts treatment on 2.5mg once a week, and the dose then increases after at least 4 weeks in steps up to a maximum of 15mg.1 Your prescriber will decide where you should restart on that ladder, based on how long you were off, your previous dose and how you tolerated it.

If you are an existing customer, contact the team on 0333 207 0413 (Monday–Friday, 9am–5pm) or through your account portal. Repeat orders re-check suitability, and there is no auto-shipping, so your prescriber reviews you before anything is dispatched.

10 · Pens and leftover medicine

What to do with a pen when you stop

When you stop, store any unopened pens in the fridge until the expiry date printed on the box, and throw away an in-use pen after 30 days out of the fridge at a temperature not above 30°C. Keep pens at 2–8°C, never freeze them, and keep the cap on to protect the pen from light.13

An in-use pen can be kept not above 30°C out of the fridge for up to 30 days, after which it should be discarded.13 If an unopened pen has been out of the fridge, check with the pharmacy before using it, rather than relying on a day limit you have seen online, as figures circulating online often come from other countries' labels.1

Return sharps to a sharps bin, which is included with every order, and ask your pharmacy how to dispose of unwanted pens.

11 · If you carry on

If you decide to continue or restart with us

If, after talking to your prescriber, you decide to continue or restart, you can order the Mounjaro pen through a free online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full.

On price, the standard price of one 4-week pen is £169.99 at 2.5mg, £218.99 at 5mg, £279.99 at 7.5mg, £290.99 at 10mg, £319.99 at 12.5mg and £329.99 at 15mg, and prices were checked 11 October 2026. A new customer's first order at any dose is £40 less with code FIRST40, and an automatic £25 reorder discount applies to every future order (code DOSE25). Switching to us at a higher dose? Your first 15mg order is £289.99, and your first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 (standard price £169.99).

If supply matters to you, our page on Mounjaro stock explains the position, and all six doses are currently in stock. Supply is through official LillyDirect, and we use genuine KwikPens.

Ordering works in three steps:

  • Free consultation. A short health questionnaire, no charge and no obligation.
  • Prescriber review. A GPhC-registered prescriber reviews your answers, not a scoring script.
  • Dispatch and delivery. Same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm, then free next-day tracked delivery in temperature-controlled packaging (Saturday delivery £14.99).

You can also compare all weight loss treatments, or return to the main Buy Mounjaro page. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a prescription-only medicine, used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary, and this page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.

12 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1 If you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, do not use Mounjaro: it must not be used during pregnancy and should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive.

How do I get Mounjaro out of my system?
You cannot speed it up. Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after your final dose it takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear, and nothing needs doing while it does. Water, exercise and supplements do not change this. If you are worried about an effect, speak to your prescriber.
How long does it take to get Mounjaro out of the body?
Roughly 4–5 weeks after your last injection. The half-life of tirzepatide is about five days, so the amount in your body falls steadily rather than ending on one day. Effects and side effects fade gradually over that time. There is no way to shorten it.
How long after stopping Mounjaro is it out of your system?
It is out of your system roughly 4–5 weeks after the final dose. Because you inject once a week, you will have had medicine in your body up to the last injection, and the level then declines from that point. Tell your prescriber when your last dose was if you have symptoms.

Yes, you can stop at any time, and the medicine clears gradually over roughly 4–5 weeks.
