How to Dispose of Mounjaro Pens Near Me (UK Guide, October 2026)

To dispose of a used Mounjaro pen, put it straight into a purpose-made sharps bin, never the household bin or recycling. When the bin is full, arrange a collection through your local council's clinical waste service or ask a nearby pharmacy or GP surgery whether it takes sharps bins, because arrangements differ by area.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Used pens go into a sharps bin straight after use, not into household rubbish or recycling.
  • Where to take a full bin depends on your area: council collection, pharmacy or GP surgery schemes all exist.
  • Phone a pharmacy or your council before you travel with a full bin, as not every branch accepts them.
  • Pens in use should be discarded after 30 days (not above 30°C) out of the fridge, so check the date on your pen.
  • Our orders include needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance, so you start with the right equipment.
In this guide

01 · The short answer

What to do with a used Mounjaro pen

Put the used pen into a sharps bin straight away, and keep the bin upright on a stable surface where children and pets cannot reach it. Do not put pens in the household bin, the recycling or the toilet. The pen leaflet gives the manufacturer's disposal instructions, so keep it to hand.13

Each KwikPen holds four weekly doses, so you will usually have a pen to dispose of about once a month.1 Once in use, a pen can be kept out of the fridge at a temperature not above 30°C for up to 30 days after first use, and must then be thrown away.1 If you do not yet have a bin, you can add a sharps container to your order.

02 · Your next step

Which disposal route suits you?

The right route depends on where you live and what your local services offer.

RouteBest forWhat to check
Council clinical waste collectionPeople who would rather not carry a full binWhether your council offers it and how to request it
Pharmacy take-backPeople who pass a pharmacy regularlyWhether that branch accepts sharps bins; phone first
GP surgery or clinicPeople who already attend regularlyWhether the surgery runs a sharps scheme
Local household waste siteA fallback if the above are unavailableWhether the site accepts sharps; many do not

03 · Finding a drop-off point

Finding where to dispose of pens near you

Many councils run an assisted collection for people who inject at home, and some will supply a bin as well.

If your council does not offer it, ask your usual pharmacy. Some pharmacies take sharps bins as a local service, but this is not universal and it is not something every branch must provide. Ring ahead and ask three things: do you accept full sharps bins, do you need me to bring a particular type of bin, and are there set times?

Your GP surgery may also help, particularly if you have a long-term condition and use injectables. Ask at reception rather than turning up with a bin unannounced.

04 · Pharmacies and sharps bins

Do Boots and other pharmacies accept sharps bins?

Some pharmacies are commissioned locally to take sharps from patients, while others are not. The only reliable answer comes from the branch you plan to visit.

When you ring, say that you are bringing a sealed, full sharps bin from a prescribed injectable. Do not leave a bin on a counter or doorstep without agreement, and never hand over loose pens. Our guides on recycling Mounjaro pens and on the Mounjaro stockist cover related questions.

05 · Sharps bin basics

Using and sealing your sharps bin

Use a bin designed for sharps, with a secure lid and an opening that stops things falling back out. Place each used pen in whole, without trying to take it apart, bend it or recap it. Handling the needle is how most accidental injuries happen.

Stop filling the bin when it reaches the fill line marked on it, then close and lock the lid as the instructions on the bin explain. Do not squash the contents down, and do not reach inside. Label it if your collection service asks you to, and keep it somewhere cool and out of sight until collection.

If a needle injury happens, wash the area with soap and water and seek advice from a pharmacist, your GP or NHS 111.

06 · Alternatives to a sharps bin

Can I use something instead of a sharps container?

A purpose-made sharps bin is the right choice, and we do not recommend making your own. Household bottles and tubs are not designed to resist puncture or to be handled by waste workers, and your council or pharmacy may refuse them.

Sharps bins are usually low-cost, and some are provided free through prescribing services. Needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance are included with every EverydayMeds order, so you do not need to source one separately. If you need a spare, you can order a 1 litre sharps container.

07 · Old and unused pens

How to get rid of old or unwanted Mounjaro pens

Treat an old pen exactly like a used one: it goes into the sharps bin, whether or not it still contains medicine. A pen in use should be discarded after 30 days (not above 30°C) out of the fridge.1 Keep pens in the fridge at 2–8°C until first use and never use one that has been frozen.1

Do not try to empty a pen out or use up the remainder. If you have stopped treatment and have unused pens, ask the pharmacy that supplied them how to return them.

How ordering works

How ordering works at EverydayMeds

Three steps, with our pharmacy team alongside you.

  1. EverydayMeds online consultation on a mobile phone

    Step 1: Online consultation — 5–10 minutes

Complete a confidential health questionnaire covering BMI, medical history and current medication. No payment is taken until you're approved.

  2. A clinician ready to review an online consultation

Step 2: Prescriber review — usually same day

A UK registered prescriber checks your suitability against the licensed criteria (BMI ≥30, or ≥27 with a weight-related condition) and contraindications, and confirms your starting dose.

  3. An EverydayMeds delivery box

    Step 3: Next-day tracked delivery

Dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy in temperature-controlled packaging with needles and a sharps bin included. Orders approved by 3pm for next-day tracked delivery.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
How do I get rid of old Mounjaro pens?
Place old pens, used or unused, into a sharps bin without taking them apart, then use your council's clinical waste collection or a pharmacy that accepts sharps bins. Do not use household bins or recycling. A pen in use should be discarded after 30 days (not above 30°C) out of the fridge.
Does Boots pharmacy accept sharps bins?
It depends on the branch and on local arrangements, so we cannot confirm it for every Boots or other pharmacy. Some pharmacies take sharps bins as a local service and others do not. Phone the branch first, say you have a sealed full bin, and ask whether and when they accept it.
Can I take a full sharps bin to a pharmacy?
Sometimes, but not every pharmacy offers this. Ring ahead and check, then bring the bin sealed and locked, never loose pens. If the branch cannot help, ask your council about clinical waste collection, which usually removes the need to carry the bin at all.
Where can I dispose of sharps for free in the UK?
Free routes include council clinical waste collections, some pharmacy take-back schemes and some GP surgery services, depending on where you live. Availability and rules differ by area, so check your council's website or ask your pharmacy. Do not put sharps in household waste or recycling.
What do I do with my sharps bin when it is full?
Stop filling at the fill line, close and lock the lid, and keep the bin upright and out of reach of children. Then arrange a council collection or take it to a pharmacy or surgery that accepts sharps bins. Check locally before you travel.
What can I use instead of a sharps container?
We recommend a purpose-made sharps bin rather than a substitute. Household containers are not designed to resist punctures and may be refused by collectors. Sharps bins are low-cost, are sometimes provided free, and a sharps bin is included with every EverydayMeds order.
How do I get rid of sharps at home?
Place each used pen whole into a sharps bin straight after the injection, without recapping, bending or dismantling it. Store the bin upright on a stable surface, away from children and pets. When full, lock the lid and arrange collection through your council or a local pharmacy.
Can I recycle Mounjaro pens?
Used pens count as sharps and should not go into household recycling. Some manufacturer or pharmacy schemes may exist, so ask the pharmacy that supplied your pen. Otherwise, use a sharps bin and a clinical waste route.
