How Soon Can I Take Mounjaro? Starting, Early Doses and Results (October 2026)
You take Mounjaro once a week, on the same day each week, so the next injection is due when that day comes round again, not sooner.1 A new patient can start as soon as a GPhC-registered prescriber approves the order and the pen arrives, usually the next day.
One pen. Four weekly doses.

A quick overview
What to know
before you start.
-
Mounjaro is a once-weekly injection; the next dose falls on your usual injection day, and the pen is not designed for shorter gaps.
-
You can start as soon as a prescriber approves your consultation and your pen is delivered; we offer free next-day tracked delivery.
-
Do not take extra doses, or combine two 2.5mg doses to make 5mg. Ask your prescriber about any timing problem.
-
If you need to move your injection day, speak to your prescriber or pharmacist first, or read the patient leaflet.
In this guide
01 · Starting
How soon can I start Mounjaro?
You can start as soon as a prescriber has reviewed your health questionnaire and approved treatment, and your pen has arrived. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. Orders placed by 3pm are dispatched the same day, and delivery is free and next-day in temperature-controlled packaging. Your first pen will be the 2.5mg starter strength.
There is no waiting list on our side: all six doses are in stock. Your first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40 (standard price £169.99). You can see current doses and prices on the Mounjaro pen page.
Treatment is only for adults who meet the licensed criteria and whom a prescriber judges suitable. That is the real limit on how soon you can start. If you are switching from another provider, say so in the consultation, because your prescriber needs to choose a safe dose to continue on.
02 · Next injection
How soon can I take the next Mounjaro dose?
The next dose is due on your usual injection day, a week after the last. Mounjaro is a once-weekly medicine, and the pen is built around that rhythm.1 There is no licensed schedule for taking it every few days, every other day or in half-weekly portions.
Our companion guide on the next dose of Mounjaro goes through the same question from the perspective of someone already on treatment.
| Situation | What the licensed instructions point to | Who to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Starting treatment | Begin on the 2.5mg pen once a prescriber approves you | Your online consultation |
| Routine weekly dose | Same day each week | Patient information leaflet |
| Injection day is a day early | Allowed if at least 3 days (72 hours) have passed since your last dose; then keep to once weekly on the new day | Prescriber or pharmacist |
| Wanting to move your injection day | Agree it first so the gap stays safe | Prescriber or pharmacist |
| Combining two 2.5mg doses to make 5mg | Not a licensed approach; do not do it | Prescriber |
| Missed dose | Take it as soon as you can within 4 days (96 hours) of the scheduled time; if more than 4 days have passed, skip it and take the next one on your normal day. Never take two doses within 3 days of each other | Prescriber or pharmacist |
If you are already on treatment and still unsure, read the broader weight loss clinic guidance or message our team, who can pass questions to the prescribing team.
03 · Taking a dose early
Can I take my Mounjaro a day early?
Yes, you can move a dose earlier, for travel or a change in routine, as long as there are at least 3 days (72 hours) between two doses.13
What is clear is the principle. Mounjaro is licensed once weekly.1 Treat the injection day as a fixed appointment. Shifting a single dose slightly for a holiday is one thing. Turning it into a regular habit, or injecting every few days to "speed things up", is another, and it is not what the product is designed for.
If you ever take a dose sooner than planned by mistake, tell your prescriber. They can advise how to continue, and you should report any unusual symptom through the Yellow Card scheme.19
04 · Changing injection day
Can I change my Mounjaro injection day?
Yes, you can change your weekly injection day if needed, as long as at least 3 days (72 hours) have passed since your last dose.13
People usually want a new day because their working week changed, because side effects cluster at the weekend, or because a trip clashes with the old day. Whatever the reason, the principle stays the same: after the change, return to once weekly on the new day from then on.
Our guide to the best time to take Mounjaro covers morning versus evening, and which day suits different routines.
A few practical habits keep the day steady:
- Set a repeating phone reminder, or log each dose in the GLPTrackr companion app.
- Keep your pen and sharps bin together so injection day is simple.
- Tell your prescriber at the monthly review if the day keeps slipping.
05 · Extra and combined doses
Can I take two 2.5mg doses to make 5mg?
No. Dose strengths are fixed by the pen you are prescribed, and joining lower doses to reach a higher one is not a licensed way to use Mounjaro.1 The strengths available are 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg, each as its own pen.1
If a dose seems too strong or too weak, the right move is a conversation with your prescriber, who can change the plan within the licence. That is what our ongoing monthly reviews are for.
06 · Titration timeline
How the dose-escalation phase works
Treatment starts low and climbs, and that gradual build is the main reason you cannot jump ahead. The starting strength is 2.5mg, and after at least 4 weeks the dose can step up, depending on how you respond and tolerate it.1 If you step up after 4 weeks on each of 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg and 10mg, your first four pens cost £959.96 at standard prices, though a new customer's first order is £40 less and every later order £25 less.
Not everyone needs to reach 15mg. Some people settle on a lower maintenance dose because it controls appetite well and suits them. A first year costs £2,711.88 if you stay on 5mg after your 2.5mg starting pen, up to £3,599.88 if you step up through every dose to 15mg, before discounts.
Why not rush? The starter strength is there to let your digestive system adjust. Your prescriber decides each step, guided by the licensed information.4
Repeat orders re-check suitability and nothing ships automatically.
07 · When results appear
How soon does Mounjaro take effect?
Many people notice feeling fuller sooner within the first few weeks, but meaningful weight change builds over months, not days. This is how it works: tirzepatide activates two natural gut-hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1, which help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1 In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.
Because early doses are low, the first weeks are often the gentlest in terms of effect. Appetite changes may be modest at 2.5mg. The picture usually strengthens as the dose climbs.
For evidence, the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults found that people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 These are trial averages, individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them. For someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg.
Read more in our page on Mounjaro time to take effect.
08 · Breaks and short courses
Can I pause or take Mounjaro short term?
You can stop, but speak to your prescriber first: tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear the system.
That has two practical consequences. If you stop for a while, a prescriber should advise which dose is safe to restart on. Never restart at a high strength by yourself.
A short course is possible in principle, since it is your choice. Be realistic about what it can achieve. In SURMOUNT-4, people who stopped tirzepatide after 36 weeks regained on average 14% of body weight over the following year, while those who continued lost a further 5.5% on average.14 Our prescribing team can talk you through stopping, pausing or maintaining at a lower dose.
09 · Pens, storage and travel
Pen life, storage and timing on the move
Once in use, a pen can be kept out of the fridge at a temperature not above 30°C for up to 30 days after first use, and must then be thrown away. Do not use a pen that has been above 30°C or has been frozen.1 Unopened pens are stored in the fridge at 2–8°C until first use and keep until the printed expiry date.13
For travel, the injection day does not change because you are away. Plan so that your pen stays cool and your dose falls on its normal day. If you are flying, read our guides on taking Mounjaro overseas and to Bali for the practical detail. For specific health situations, such as a stoma or other medicines like amlodipine, ask your prescriber before you inject.
Where a question involves insulin or sulfonylureas, remember that doses of those medicines may need adjusting because of the risk of low blood sugar. Tell your prescriber about everything you take.
10 · Serious side effects
Serious side effects: when to get help straight away
Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1
11 · NHS and private routes
NHS or private: how soon can you actually start?
Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).4 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.
Private treatment through a registered pharmacy, ours is GPhC 9012878, lets you start once a prescriber has reviewed you. That review matters, and it is the same suitability check whichever route you take. Prices checked 10 October 2026. If you use the pill, switch to a non-oral method, or add a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase. Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive.
How ordering works
How ordering works at EverydayMeds
Three steps, with our pharmacy team alongside you.

A UK registered prescriber checks your suitability against the licensed criteria (BMI ≥30, or ≥27 with a weight-related condition) and contraindications, and confirms your starting dose.
Step 3: Next-day tracked delivery
Dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy in temperature-controlled packaging with needles and a sharps bin included. Orders approved by 3pm for next-day tracked delivery.
Prescription and dispatch follow clinical approval. Confirm current delivery options when ordering.
Afterwards you're not on your own: dose-change reviews are built in before each step up, our pharmacist team is available for side-effect questions, and repeat orders re-check suitability rather than auto-shipping.
