A quick overview
What to know
before you start.
-
Always declare amlodipine, and every other tablet, in your Mounjaro consultation so the prescriber can review the combination.
-
Do not stop, skip or change blood pressure tablets yourself because you are starting Mounjaro. Decisions about your dose belong to your prescriber or GP.
-
Mounjaro slows how quickly the stomach empties, which is why a complete medicines list matters.
-
Report any new or worrying symptom to your prescriber, and to the Yellow Card scheme if you suspect a side effect.
In this guide
01 · The short answer
Can you take Mounjaro with amlodipine?
The honest answer is that it depends on you, and the check is done by a person, not a web page. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.1 Part of that review is looking at what else you take. Amlodipine goes on that list, alongside everything else.
A prescriber needs to know your blood pressure readings, your other conditions and the rest of your medicines before deciding.
Declare it, let the prescriber review it, and follow their advice on monitoring.
02 · Your next step
What should you do if you take amlodipine?
Keep taking amlodipine exactly as prescribed until a clinician tells you otherwise. Starting a weight-loss medicine is not a reason to adjust a blood pressure tablet on your own. Stopping or halving a dose without advice can leave blood pressure uncontrolled.
Then do three things:
- List every medicine you take, including the amlodipine strength, other blood pressure tablets, over-the-counter products and supplements.
- Note your recent blood pressure readings if you have a home monitor or recent surgery readings.
- Complete our free consultation, where you declare all of this. A GPhC-registered prescriber reviews it, and unsuitable orders are refunded automatically.
03 · At a glance
What to tell your prescriber
| Information | Why it helps the review |
|---|---|
| Amlodipine and any other blood pressure tablets | Lets the prescriber consider the whole regimen, not a single tablet |
| Recent blood pressure readings | Gives a baseline to compare with as treatment progresses |
| Other conditions, including diabetes | Some diabetes medicines may need dose changes alongside Mounjaro |
| Oral contraceptive use | Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which can reduce absorption of oral contraceptive pills; switch to a non-oral method or add a barrier method for 4 weeks after starting and after each dose increase7 |
| Supplements and over-the-counter products | Completes the picture; many people forget to mention them |
04 · How Mounjaro works
How Mounjaro works, and why it matters for your other tablets
Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable medicine made by Eli Lilly. In the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1
Tirzepatide activates two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1 Most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.
Slower stomach emptying is the part prescribers keep in mind when they review a list of tablets, because it changes how quickly medicines pass through the gut. That is the reason we ask for the full list rather than only the medicines you think are relevant.
05 · Blood pressure medicines
Mounjaro and blood pressure medicines in general
People ask whether Mounjaro can be taken with blood pressure meds as a class, and the safest answer is the same: it is reviewed individually. Amlodipine, losartan, lisinopril and others work in different ways, and a prescriber looks at the specific combination you take.
If your tablet is different, we have separate pages on losartan and Mounjaro and lisinopril and Mounjaro. For cholesterol tablets, see taking Mounjaro with statins.
06 · Medicines list
Why a full medicines list matters
A complete list is the most useful thing you can bring to a Mounjaro consultation. The prescriber can only weigh up what they can see, and a single missing tablet can change the advice.
Medicine classes that prescribers pay particular attention to include diabetes treatments, where doses may need adjusting because of the risk of low blood sugar, and oral contraceptives, where absorption can be reduced.17 Neither of those is a reason to avoid treatment; they are reasons to be open about what you take.
Other medicines can matter too. Our page on Mounjaro and methotrexate shows how we approach a different medicine on the same principle.
Health conditions matter as much as tablets. If you have had an operation, read about taking Mounjaro after surgery. If you have gallbladder problems, see our guide to Mounjaro with gallstones.
07 · Monitoring and reviews
Monitoring, reviews and reporting symptoms
Your treatment is reviewed on an ongoing basis, not just at the start. Our aftercare includes monthly reviews, dose-titration and follow-up assessments by the prescribing team, plus side-effect support. Repeat orders re-check suitability, and nothing ships automatically.
Between reviews, tell your prescriber or GP about any new symptom, especially if it began after a dose change. If you suspect a side effect from any medicine, you can report it through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19
Describe what you notice, when it started and what you take, and let the prescriber assess it.
For severe or urgent symptoms, get medical help straight away: call 999 or go to A&E, or call NHS 111. Keep regular blood pressure checks with your GP practice as usual, because those readings are what guide any changes to your amlodipine.
08 · Titration and dose
How the dose builds up
Everyone starts Mounjaro on 2.5mg once a week; after at least 4 weeks the dose increases to 5mg, and can then step up by 2.5mg at a minimum of 4-week intervals up to a maximum of 15mg weekly, depending on how you respond and tolerate it, and your prescriber will guide the right pace.
For anyone taking regular tablets, each increase is a natural point to check in. Your prescriber can ask how you have been feeling and whether any of your other medicines need a second look. That is part of why we do not recommend buying from sellers that offer to supply without a consultation or prescription.
09 · NHS and private routes
NHS or private: where the medicines check happens
Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).46
Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting. On either route, the medicines review is the same in principle: a clinician looks at everything you take.
If you are already seeing your GP for blood pressure, mention that you are considering Mounjaro. A shared picture helps both prescribers. Our weight loss clinic page explains how a private consultation works.
10 · Genuine supply
Why genuine supply matters if you take other medicines
A medicines review only means something if the pen in your hand is the real product. Counterfeit and unregulated weight-loss injections are a recognised problem, and the MHRA publishes counterfeit medicine alerts.7 If the contents are unknown, nobody can sensibly judge how they interact with amlodipine or anything else.
We supply Mounjaro through official LillyDirect supply, direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution, as genuine KwikPens, with free next-day tracked delivery in temperature-controlled packaging. You can verify our registration on the GPhC register under number 9012878.12
11 · Serious side effects
Serious side effects: when to get help straight away
Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1 Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which can reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed. The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.
