A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Everyone starts on 2.5mg once a week; this dose is for adjustment, not weight loss itself.
  • The dose can step up after at least four weeks at the earliest, to a licensed maximum of 15mg weekly.
  • Many people settle at 5mg, 10mg or 15mg. Higher is not automatically better.
  • Each pen contains four weekly doses, so a pen lasts four weeks.
  • Taking more or less than the pen is designed to deliver is not licensed.

01 · The core answer

The tirzepatide dose ladder, mg per week

Everyone starts Mounjaro on 2.5mg once a week. This starting dose is about letting your body adjust, not about weight loss itself. After at least four weeks the dose increases to 5mg, and can then step up by 2.5mg at a time, no sooner than every four weeks (7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg), up to a maximum of 15mg weekly, depending on how you respond and tolerate it.1

StepWeekly doseWhat it is for
Starter2.5mgAdjustment phase
Step up5mgFirst maintenance option
Titration7.5mgFurther step if needed
Maintenance option10mgCommon settling dose
Titration12.5mgFurther step if needed
Maximum15mgLicensed ceiling

Many people settle at a maintenance dose of 5mg, 10mg or 15mg. Higher is not automatically better, and your prescriber will guide the right pace.1 For a wider view, see our guide on how much Mounjaro per week you may need.

02 · Your next step

What should I do next?

If you are already prescribed Mounjaro, follow your prescriber's titration plan rather than a general chart. If you are considering treatment, a free consultation with a GPhC-registered prescriber decides whether you are suitable and which dose to begin with. The Mounjaro pen 2.5mg starting pen has a standard price of £169.99, and our weight loss clinic explains the full process. You can also read how much Mounjaro costs per week.

03 · Pen strength and units

Pen strength, units and the dial

Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly. It comes as a pre-filled multi-dose pen (KwikPen) in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.1 Each KwikPen contains four weekly doses.13

Worried about syringes or unit conversions? Mounjaro pens are dialled in mg, so see our notes on converting units to mg and 12.5mg and units.13

04 · Dose and weight loss

Does a higher weekly dose mean more weight loss?

In trials, average loss rose with dose, but these are averages, not predictions. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone. These are trial averages — individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2

The pace is gradual. Most measurable progress builds from 5mg onward, month by month, and the early weeks on 2.5mg are usually modest.1 For a realistic weekly picture, read how much to lose per week and Mounjaro kg per week.

05 · Staying within the licence

Staying within the licence

The licensed maximum is 15mg weekly.

Wondering about more than one injection in a week? See Mounjaro two doses per week. If you plateau, the licensed response is to review food intake, protect protein and activity, and discuss a step-up with your prescriber if you are not yet at maximum. A plateau is not a reason to double doses or add unlicensed products.

How ordering works

How ordering works at EverydayMeds

Three steps, with our pharmacy team alongside you.

  1. EverydayMeds online consultation on a mobile phone

  2. A clinician ready to review an online consultation

Step 2: Prescriber review — usually same day

A UK registered prescriber checks your suitability against the licensed criteria (BMI ≥30, or ≥27 with a weight-related condition) and contraindications, and confirms your starting dose.

  3. An EverydayMeds delivery box

    Step 3: Next-day tracked delivery

Dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy in temperature-controlled packaging with needles and a sharps bin included. Orders approved by 3pm for next-day tracked delivery.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Is 2.5mg of tirzepatide enough to lose weight?
The 2.5mg dose is a starting dose for adjustment, not for weight loss itself. Some people notice appetite change and early loss in the first week, while others feel little until a higher dose, and both are normal. Most measurable progress builds from 5mg onward, so your prescriber will usually step up after at least four weeks.
What is the maximum mg of tirzepatide per week?
The licensed maximum is 15mg once a week. You reach it by stepping up from 2.5mg through 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg and 12.5mg, with at least four weeks between steps. Many people settle on a lower maintenance dose, and your prescriber will guide the right pace for you.
How long should I be on 5mg of tirzepatide?
The dose can only step up after at least four weeks on each strength, but there is no fixed length at 5mg. Many people settle at 5mg as a maintenance dose. Your prescriber decides whether to stay or step up based on how you respond and tolerate it.
Is a dose above 15mg too much?
Yes. 15mg once a week is the licensed maximum, and there is no safety data for going beyond it or for taking extra doses. If progress has stalled at your current dose, discuss it with your prescriber rather than adjusting the dose yourself.
Is 10mg of tirzepatide a lot?
10mg is the fourth of six strengths and a common maintenance dose, so it sits in the upper-middle of the ladder rather than at the top. Many people settle at 5mg, 10mg or 15mg. Higher is not automatically better, and your prescriber will guide the right dose for you.
Is tirzepatide stronger than Ozempic?
They are different medicines, so their mg doses cannot be compared directly. Tirzepatide activates two gut-hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1, whereas semaglutide (Wegovy and Ozempic) is a single-action GLP-1 medicine. Ozempic is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes — it is not a UK weight-loss medicine, and the licensed weight-management options are Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and Wegovy (semaglutide 2.4mg). Your prescriber can advise which licensed option suits you.
What happens if I max out on tirzepatide?
Reaching 15mg means you are at the top of the licensed ladder, and no further step-up is available. Your prescriber reviews your response, and if you have lost less than 5% of your starting weight after 6 months on the highest dose you can tolerate, they will discuss whether continuing or stopping is right.
What is the bad side of tirzepatide?
The commonest early effects are mild nausea, altered appetite and tiredness in the first days after each injection, and these usually settle. Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of the skin or eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. Report anything new or lasting to your prescriber, and you can report side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.
