How Long Before GLP-1 Is Out of Your System? (October 2026)

For Mounjaro (tirzepatide), it takes roughly four to five weeks to clear your system after your final dose, and there is no way to speed this up. The medicine has a half-life of about five days, so levels fall gradually rather than stopping overnight.1

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Mounjaro takes roughly four to five weeks to clear after your last dose, because levels fall gradually rather than switching off.
  • Water, detox products, supplements and fasting do not speed clearance, and nothing needs doing while the medicine clears.
  • Other GLP-1 medicines clear at different speeds, so check the product information for the specific medicine you took.
  • Appetite and weight can change as levels fall, so plan a conversation with your prescriber before you stop.
  • Tell any clinician, surgeon or dentist you have taken a GLP-1 injection recently, and report new symptoms through Yellow Card.
In this guide

01 · The core answer

How long does GLP-1 stay in your system after your last dose?

For Mounjaro, the answer is roughly four to five weeks. Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear the system — there is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1

That is a different question from "how long until I feel it wearing off". The felt effect on appetite usually fades before the last traces have left your body. Think of clearance as a slope, not a cliff edge. Each passing week leaves less medicine in your body than the week before.

If you are thinking about stopping, the useful question is not how to flush the medicine out. It is what you want to happen next, and who should help you plan it. A short conversation with your prescriber before your final injection is the single most helpful step.

02 · Comparing medicines

Clearance by type of GLP-1 medicine

"GLP-1" covers several medicines, and the answer changes with each one.

MedicineHow it is takenHow long it takes to clear
Mounjaro (tirzepatide)Weekly injection, 2.5mg to 15mgRoughly four to five weeks after the final dose1
Wegovy (semaglutide)Weekly injection, 0.25mg up to 2.4mgFigures vary — your prescriber can advise, or check the Wegovy product information18
Liraglutide (Saxenda and similar products)Daily injection, supplied at 6mg/mlFigures vary — your prescriber can advise

03 · Your decision

If you are thinking of stopping: what to do next

Speak to the prescriber who supplied your medicine before you stop. They can talk through your reasons, whether a lower dose or a pause fits better, and what monitoring makes sense. At EverydayMeds, ongoing monthly reviews and side-effect support are part of the service, so you do not need to make this decision alone.

If you are already well past your last dose and want to restart, do not guess where to begin. Everyone starts Mounjaro on 2.5mg once a week, and your prescriber will advise how that applies to you after a break.1

04 · What half-life means

What half-life means for clearance

A half-life is the time it takes for the amount of a drug in your body to fall by half. It explains why clearance is gradual rather than sudden. Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days.1

After each half-life, the remaining amount halves again. The curve flattens as it goes. That is why the figure given for "fully clear" is longer than the time you will notice a difference.

The date of your last injection, not the date you decide to stop, starts the clock.

If you want the detail on the same question for Mounjaro specifically, our guide on Mounjaro out of system goes through it step by step, and how long GLP-1 is in your system covers the wider class.

05 · Can you speed it up?

Can you get GLP-1 out of your system faster?

No. There is no way to speed up clearance, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1

  • Drinking lots of water. Staying hydrated is sensible, particularly if you have had nausea or sickness, but it does not remove the medicine from your body faster.
  • Detox teas, cleanses and juice fasts. These have no established effect on clearance. Some can cause stomach upset or dehydration.
  • Supplements marketed as natural alternatives. These are low-cost supplements with no clinical oversight, dosing is not standardised, and they are not a substitute for a licensed medicine. Dramatic weight-loss claims on these products should be treated with caution.
  • Extra exercise or sweating. Being active is good for you, but it does not clear the medicine faster.

If you see a seller offering to supply a "flush" product or a GLP-1 without a consultation or prescription, treat that as a warning sign. The MHRA publishes counterfeit alerts and runs the Yellow Card scheme for reporting problems.7

Our related guides on getting Mounjaro out of your system faster and how to flush Mounjaro out of your system explain the same point in more detail, including why the honest answer is time.

06 · What happens after stopping

What happens to your body after you stop GLP-1?

Over the weeks as levels fall, the effects on your appetite and digestion fade. Tirzepatide works by activating the GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which help regulate appetite and slow how quickly the stomach empties.1 As the medicine clears, that help is gradually withdrawn. Many people notice hunger returning or portions creeping up. Mounjaro manages weight; it does not cure the biology behind it. In SURMOUNT-4, people who stopped tirzepatide after 36 weeks regained on average 14% of body weight over the following year, while those who continued treatment lost a further 5.5% on average. Stopping should always be planned with your prescriber, with diet and activity habits ready to carry the load.

Results vary, and they depend on what you eat, your activity, your sleep and the dose you were on. The habits you built while on treatment are what you carry forward.

Practical steps that help many people:

  • Tell your prescriber before your final dose so they can plan follow-up with you.
  • Keep protein and regular meals in your routine, and keep moving.
  • Weigh yourself on a consistent schedule and judge by trend, not by a single reading.
  • Keep your food diary or tracking habit going. The free GLPTrackr companion app can help you track your journey.

If you notice any new symptom after stopping, do not assume it is connected or unconnected. Discuss it with your prescriber and report suspected side effects via the Yellow Card scheme.19

07 · Withdrawal and side effects

Are there withdrawal symptoms from stopping GLP-1?

Withdrawal symptoms are not listed in the UK patient leaflet; tell your prescriber about any new or lasting symptom.13 If you feel unwell after stopping, speak to your prescriber rather than searching forums for an explanation.

It is common to confuse two different experiences. One is the return of appetite, which is the medicine's effect fading rather than a withdrawal symptom. The other is a new physical symptom, which deserves a proper conversation. Report suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme, which is how regulators learn about real-world effects.19

Mild nausea, altered appetite and tiredness in the first days after each injection are the commonest early effects while on treatment, and they usually settle.1 Those are linked to taking the medicine, not to stopping it.

08 · Why the timing matters

Why clearance time matters in practice

Because the medicine stays in your body for weeks, some situations need planning well beyond your final injection.

Surgery, endoscopy and dental work. Slower stomach emptying is part of how this medicine works, which is why anaesthetic and procedure teams want to know about it.1 Tell the team that you take or recently took a GLP-1 injection. Follow the instructions they give you, and do not stop or restart on your own initiative.

Oral contraception. The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.1 Ask your prescriber or pharmacist what to do about contraception, including after you stop.

Other medicines. If you also use insulin or sulfonylureas, doses may need adjusting because of the risk of low blood sugar.1 That does not mean they cannot be combined. It means your clinician should be involved when you start and when you stop.

Alcohol. There is no direct interaction between Mounjaro and alcohol, but drinking on a reduced appetite and emptier stomach can hit harder than usual. If you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea, alcohol increases the risk of low blood sugar. Checking the basics such as sleep and alcohol is also part of the advice when weight loss plateaus.1

09 · Missed doses and gaps

Missed doses, gaps and restarting

A gap in your injections is not the same as stopping on purpose, but the same logic of gradual clearance applies. The missed dose rule is simple. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can within 4 days (96 hours) of the scheduled time, then carry on with your usual day. If more than 4 days have passed, skip the missed dose entirely and take the next one on your normal day — never take two doses within 3 days of each other.1

You can also change your weekly injection day if needed, as long as there are at least 3 days between two doses.1

If you have been off treatment for a while and want to restart, your prescriber will advise on the right strength. The licensed ladder starts low for tolerability, and many people settle at a maintenance dose of 5mg, 10mg or 15mg, but higher is not automatically better.

10 · How we support you

Support from EverydayMeds if you are unsure

Stopping, pausing or restarting is a clinical decision, and it is best made with the prescriber who knows your history. EverydayMeds is a GPhC-registered UK online pharmacy (registration 9012878), and every order starts with a free online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.

Aftercare includes ongoing monthly reviews, dose-titration and follow-up assessments by the prescribing team, and side-effect support. Repeat orders re-check suitability, and there is no auto-shipping, so nothing is sent without your say-so. Our support team is available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, by email, account portal chat or phone.

11 · Common myths

Myths about GLP-1 clearance

"It is out of your system once the effects wear off." Not so. The felt effect can fade while traces remain. Use the roughly four to five weeks figure for Mounjaro as your guide to when it has fully cleared.1

"You can flush it out." No. There is no way to speed clearance up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1

"Everyone clears it at the same speed." Medicines differ, and individuals differ. The half-life is a guide, not a personal timetable. Your prescriber can advise if you have particular health conditions.

"People can smell it." Smell is not on the list of side effects in the UK patient leaflet. If you notice a new symptom, discuss it with your prescriber and report it through the Yellow Card scheme.19

For the related question of how long the medicine takes to begin working, see how long before GLP-1 works, and for the opposite end of the timeline see how long GLP-1 stays in your system.

12 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
How long does GLP stay in your system after stopping?
For Mounjaro, it takes roughly four to five weeks to clear after your final dose, because tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days. For other GLP-1 medicines the timescale differs, so check the product information or ask your prescriber. Your last injection date starts the clock, not the day you decide to stop.
How long does it take for a GLP-1 to wear off?
You may notice the appetite effect fade before the medicine has fully cleared. For Mounjaro, complete clearance takes roughly four to five weeks after the last dose. The change is gradual, because levels fall over several weeks rather than switching off. How quickly you notice it varies from person to person.
What happens to your body after you stop taking GLP-1?
As levels fall, the effects on appetite and stomach emptying fade, so many people notice hunger returning. In SURMOUNT-4, people who stopped tirzepatide after 36 weeks regained on average 14% of body weight over the following year, while those who continued treatment lost a further 5.5% on average. Results vary. Speak to your prescriber before your last dose, keep up protein, regular meals and activity, and judge your weight by trend rather than single weigh-ins. Report new symptoms via Yellow Card.
Are there withdrawal symptoms from stopping GLP-1?
Returning appetite is the medicine's effect fading, not withdrawal. If you feel unwell or notice a new symptom after stopping, discuss it with your prescriber and report suspected side effects through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.
Does drinking water help remove Mounjaro?
No. Staying hydrated is sensible, especially if you have had nausea, but water does not speed up how quickly Mounjaro leaves your body. For Mounjaro, the product information states there is no way to speed clearance, and nothing needs doing while it clears.
Is it safe to drink alcohol while taking GLP-1 medication?
There is no direct interaction between Mounjaro and alcohol, but drinking on a reduced appetite and emptier stomach can hit harder than usual, and alcohol adds calories that work against your goals. If you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea, alcohol increases the risk of low blood sugar. Moderation is the sensible rule; ask your prescriber if you are unsure.
What not to mix with Mounjaro?
Do not add unlicensed products or change doses yourself. Tell your prescriber about everything you take. Insulin or sulfonylureas may need dose adjustments because of low blood sugar, and Mounjaro can reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed: switch to a non-oral method or add a barrier method for 4 weeks after starting and for 4 weeks after each dose increase. These are not blanket bans, but they need clinical guidance.
What are the most common side effects of Mounjaro?
The most common side effects — affecting more than 1 in 10 people — are nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort. If side effects trouble you, speak to your prescriber and report them via Yellow Card.
Can you smell when someone is on a GLP-1 medicine?
Smell is not on the list of side effects in the UK Mounjaro patient leaflet. If you notice any new symptom while taking or after stopping a GLP-1 medicine, discuss it with your prescriber and report it through the Yellow Card scheme.
