A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Vision changes are not listed as a side effect in the UK patient leaflet, so do not assume a new symptom is caused by Mounjaro.
  • Sudden loss of vision, eye pain or a curtain-like shadow needs medical help straight away, not a wait-and-see approach.
  • If you have type 2 diabetes or existing eye disease, tell your prescriber and keep your eye screening appointments.
  • Tell your prescriber about any new or lasting symptom, and report suspected side effects through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.
In this guide

01 · The core answer

Does Mounjaro affect your vision?

Vision changes are not listed as a side effect in the UK patient leaflet for Mounjaro.

Mounjaro is a once-weekly injection of tirzepatide. It activates the GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which helps regulate appetite, slows how quickly the stomach empties and improves the way the body responds to insulin.1

That does not mean a change in your eyesight is imaginary. It means the cause needs working out properly rather than being assumed. Tell your prescriber about any new or lasting symptom.13

02 · Your next step

What to do if your vision changes

Act on how sudden and severe the change is, not on which medicine you take. Treat these as urgent and seek medical help straight away rather than waiting for your next review:

  • sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes
  • a dark curtain or shadow across your field of view
  • new flashing lights or a sudden shower of floaters
  • eye pain, a red eye with reduced vision, or double vision that appears suddenly

For milder changes, such as slightly blurred reading vision or tired, gritty eyes, book an eye test with an optician and tell your prescriber. Do not stop or change your dose on your own without speaking to them first.

If you suspect Mounjaro is responsible, you can report it through the Yellow Card scheme.19

03 · Why vision can change

Why vision can change when you start treatment

Eyesight can shift for reasons unrelated to any medicine, and the timing of a new injection can make a coincidence look like a cause. Starting a weight loss treatment is a big change, and several things often happen at once.

If you are eating and drinking noticeably less than before, it is sensible to keep up your fluids and regular meals. That is good general practice during any reduced-calorie diet, and it is worth discussing with your prescriber if you feel unwell.

Everyday causes of blurred vision include a change in glasses prescription that was already due, eye strain, dry eyes, migraines, allergies, and tiredness. An optician can usually tell these apart quickly. Many of them have nothing to do with your treatment, which is why a simple eye test is a good first step.

04 · Diabetes and eye health

If you have type 2 diabetes or existing eye disease

People with type 2 diabetes should be especially alert to eye changes, whatever treatment they use. Mounjaro is licensed in the UK both for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1 If you have diabetes, you are likely already invited to regular diabetic eye screening, and you should keep those appointments.

Tell your prescriber about any history of eye problems, including diabetic eye disease, before starting. Your prescriber needs your full medical picture to judge suitability. Mention it again if your eyesight changes after you begin treatment.

Your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of diabetic retinopathy.

If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea, your doses may need adjusting when you start Mounjaro because of the risk of low blood sugar. Your prescriber or diabetes team should guide this. Do not adjust those doses by yourself.

05 · Can it be reversed?

Do vision changes go away?

Whether a vision change goes away depends entirely on its cause, so there is no single answer that applies to everyone. Some eye conditions need treatment, and delay can matter.

If your vision changes soon after a dose and you wonder whether to stop, speak to your prescriber first. Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system, and there is no way to speed this up.1 That means stopping will not produce an instant answer, and an eye examination is a faster way to find the cause.

Keep a short note of when the change began, whether it affects one eye or both, whether it comes and goes, and what you were doing. This helps both your optician and your prescriber far more than a general description.

07 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

08 · Safe use and access

Using Mounjaro safely, and how access works

Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary.

If you go private, use a regulated pharmacy. We are GPhC-registered (9012878), supply Mounjaro through official LillyDirect supply, and include ongoing monthly reviews. Never buy from sellers offering to supply without a consultation or prescription, because counterfeit pens are a genuine safety risk.7

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Does Mounjaro affect your vision?
Vision changes are not listed as a side effect in the UK patient leaflet, and blurred vision has many everyday causes. Tell your prescriber about any new or lasting symptom so the cause can be properly investigated, and you can report suspected side effects through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.
Can Mounjaro cause blindness?
Blindness is not listed as a side effect in the UK patient leaflet. Sudden loss of vision from any cause is an emergency, so get medical help straight away rather than waiting. Report any suspected link through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme and tell your prescriber.
Can vision loss from GLP-1 be reversed?
It depends entirely on the cause, which is why any sudden or lasting vision loss needs urgent assessment. Get medical help straight away for sudden vision loss, and speak to your prescriber before changing treatment.
Can blurry vision go back to normal?
Often, yes, when the cause is something simple like tiredness, dry eyes or an out-of-date glasses prescription. It depends on the cause, so an eye test is the best first step. If blurring is sudden, severe or comes with eye pain, get medical help straight away rather than waiting for it to settle.
Does blurry vision from semaglutide go away?
It depends on the cause. Get an eye test, tell your prescriber, and report a suspected side effect via Yellow Card. Urgent changes, such as sudden loss of sight, need immediate medical attention.
What are the most common side effects of Mounjaro?
The most common side effects, affecting more than 1 in 10 people, are nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort. Common effects (up to 1 in 10) include indigestion, reduced appetite, dizziness, reflux, burping, hair shedding and injection-site reactions. Report anything unexpected through Yellow Card and to your prescribing team.
Should I stop Mounjaro if my vision changes?
Do not stop or change your dose without speaking to your prescriber, unless you need urgent medical care for sudden symptoms. Tirzepatide takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system, so stopping will not give a quick answer. An eye test and a prescriber review are the fastest ways to find the cause.
