  • The 'Ozempic baby boom' is a media label, not a clinical finding.
  • If you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly.
In this guide

01 · The core answer

Can I take a GLP-1 while trying to conceive?

Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. Agree the timing with your prescriber. Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes, and pregnancy planning sits outside what the medicine is for.1

Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear the system — there is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1 Your own stop date should be at least one month before you try to conceive, as agreed with your prescriber.

If you are not yet trying, the most useful step is a conversation now. Tell your prescriber at your monthly review that pregnancy is on your mind, even if it is months away. Our Mounjaro pen consultation is free and reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.

02 · Your next step

What should I do next?

Decide which of three situations you are in, because each has a different answer.

  • Thinking about it in the future: keep taking the medicine as prescribed, use reliable contraception, and raise your plans at your next review.
  • Ready to start trying soon: speak to your prescriber about a stop date now; Mounjaro should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive.
  • Already pregnant or think you might be: stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly.

None of these require guesswork. They require a short conversation with someone who has your medical history.

03 · What GLP-1 medicines are

What are GLP-1 medications?

GLP-1 medicines copy a natural gut hormone that helps regulate appetite and how quickly the stomach empties. Semaglutide (Wegovy and Ozempic) acts on the GLP-1 receptor alone. Mounjaro is different: tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once, GIP and GLP-1.1

Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin. In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.1

Mounjaro is a once-weekly injection in a pre-filled KwikPen with six strengths from 2.5mg to 15mg.1 It is prescription-only and used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

04 · Fertility and hormones

Does Mounjaro affect fertility or hormones?

Mounjaro works by acting on the GIP and GLP-1 gut-hormone receptors, and it slows how quickly the stomach empties.1 Whether that has wider hormonal consequences for you is a question for your prescriber, who knows your history.

If you notice a change in your cycle, new symptoms or anything unexpected, tell your prescriber and report it through the Yellow Card scheme.

05 · The Ozempic baby boom

What is the 'Ozempic baby boom'?

It is a media phrase for stories of people who became pregnant unexpectedly while taking, or soon after stopping, a weight-loss injection. It is a headline, not a clinical finding.

People who start treatment often do so because weight is affecting their health, and many assume they could not easily conceive. Nobody should treat that assumption as contraception. If you are sexually active and do not want a pregnancy, you need reliable contraception whatever your weight or your medical history.

If you are hoping to conceive, the same story is a reminder that you should plan with your prescriber instead of relying on anything you have read online. Treat any individual accounts, including the ones that go viral, as a prompt to ask a clinician, not as guidance.

06 · Contraception while on treatment

Contraception while taking Mounjaro

Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which can reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed.7 The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.1 That matters for two groups: people who do not want to conceive and rely on the pill, and people who are about to stop and try.

Your prescriber can tell you whether your method needs adjusting or backing up with another one, and for how long. Do not stop contraception to start trying until you have a plan for the medicine too.

07 · If you get pregnant

What if I get pregnant while on a GLP-1?

If you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly. A positive test is not an emergency in itself, but Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy.13

Have your pen details, your dose and the date of your last injection to hand, as the clinician will ask. Because tirzepatide takes roughly four to five weeks to clear after a final dose, the medicine does not disappear straight away, and that is useful information to share rather than a reason to panic.1

If you are on Mounjaro through us, tell the prescribing team as soon as you know. Repeat orders re-check suitability, and nothing is shipped automatically, so your supply will not carry on without review. You can report a suspected side effect through the Yellow Card scheme.

08 · Weight and planning

Weight loss, stopping and planning ahead

Trial results give averages: in SURMOUNT-1, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone. These are trial averages, and individual results vary.2

They do remind you that treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them, and those habits are the part you take with you when you stop.

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years, with the highest-need groups first.6 If you are on a private course and planning a pregnancy, ask your GP what ongoing support they can offer.

09 · Questions for your prescriber

Questions worth asking before you start trying

A short list makes the appointment more useful. Write your answers down beforehand, and be honest about your timeline, even if it is vague.

  • When should I take my final injection, given how long the medicine takes to clear?
  • Does my contraception need changing or backing up while I am on treatment, and afterwards?
  • What should I do about diet, activity and monitoring once I stop?
  • Who should I contact if I find out I am pregnant sooner than planned?
  • Are there any other medicines I take that need reviewing before I try?

A good prescriber will welcome these questions. Ongoing monthly reviews are part of how we work, so you do not need to wait for a crisis to bring it up.

10 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1
