GLP-1 Needle Guide: Choosing, Using and Disposing of Pen Needles (October 2026)

A GLP-1 needle is a fine, sterile, disposable tip that screws or clicks onto your pen and delivers the medicine just under the skin. Shorter, thinner needles are the usual choice for weight-loss pens, and used needles go straight into a sharps container, never the household bin. Needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance come with every EverydayMeds order. Guidance checked 9 October 2026.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • A GLP-1 needle is a disposable, sterile tip. Use a new one for every injection and never share a pen or needle.
  • Check the pen's own leaflet for the needle it is designed for, and ask a pharmacist before swapping to a different type.
  • Mounjaro is injected under the skin once a week, rotating between the stomach, thigh and (if someone else injects) the upper arm.
  • Put used needles in a sharps container straight away, keep it out of children's reach, and ask your council or pharmacy how to hand it in.
  • Needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance are included with every EverydayMeds order.

01 · The core answer

Which needle do you need for a GLP-1 pen?

You need the needle type your pen was designed for, used once and then discarded. GLP-1 pens are injected into the fat layer just under the skin, so the needle only has to be short and fine. Length and thickness (called gauge) are printed on the needle pack, and your prescriber or pharmacist can tell you which suits your build and your pen.

Two decisions matter most. First, is the needle compatible with your specific pen? Second, are you comfortable with the length? Shorter needles are the common starting point, and some people prefer something longer if a clinician advises it. Our guides on what size needle suits a weight loss injection and the Mounjaro injection needle go deeper on length and gauge.

PenHow often it is injectedWhat to know about needles
Mounjaro KwikPen (tirzepatide)Once weekly, in strengths from 2.5mg to 15mgNeedles, sharps bin and guidance come with every EverydayMeds order. Follow the pen's leaflet.
Wegovy pen (semaglutide)Once weekly, on the ladder 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg, 2.4mgUse the needle type specified for that pen. Check the leaflet or ask your pharmacist.
Liraglutide pens (Saxenda and similar)Daily injection, supplied at 6mg/mlDaily use means more needles and more sharps disposal. Follow the product leaflet.

Whatever you use, never reuse a needle and never share a pen, even with someone on the same medicine.

02 · What to do next

What should you do next?

If you already have a prescription, check that your needles, sharps container and instructions arrived together, and read the pen leaflet before your first injection. If you are still deciding on treatment, our weight loss clinic explains the options. When you are ready, the Mounjaro pen starts with a 2.5mg pen at £169.99 standard price, and your first 2.5mg order is £129.99 with code FIRST40. Every later order is £25 off the standard price (code DOSE25).

03 · Needle length and gauge

Needle length and gauge explained

Length is how far the needle reaches into the skin, and gauge is how thick it is. A higher gauge number means a thinner needle. Most people using weight-loss pens choose a short, fine needle, because the medicine only needs to reach the fat just under the skin, not the muscle beneath it.

Shorter needles often need little or no skin pinch, which many people find simpler. Longer needles are available and may be advised by a clinician, for example where there is more tissue to pass through or where a shorter needle feels unreliable. Neither choice is right for everyone, so the pack information and your prescriber matter more than a general rule.

Thinner needles tend to feel more comfortable, but gauge and length are only part of comfort. Technique, relaxed muscles, a fresh needle and rotating sites all help. If injections regularly hurt or leak, mention it at your review rather than changing needles at random.

If you want length-specific detail, we have separate guides on how long a Mounjaro needle is, a medium-length needle for Mounjaro and a longer needle for Mounjaro, including when each might be discussed.

04 · Where to get needles

Where can you get needles for a GLP-1 pen?

The simplest route is to get them with your medicine. Needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance are included with every EverydayMeds order, so you should not need to hunt for them separately. If you need more, you can add pen needles and a sharps container from our shop.

Many people ask whether they can buy needles for an Ozempic pen. Pharmacies can supply pen needles, and some are sold without a prescription, but you should still match the needle to the pen. We do not supply Ozempic, which is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes and is not a UK weight-loss medicine, so check that pen's leaflet or ask your pharmacist which needle it is designed for. Never force a needle onto a pen it does not fit.

Be cautious with marketplace listings and sellers offering to supply needles or medicine without a consultation or prescription. Needles must be sterile and sealed. Do not use a pack that is damaged, open or past its printed expiry date.

Wegovy users should also keep the supplied needles with the pen and ask their prescriber or pharmacist if they run short. The Wegovy pen page lists what to expect with an order.

05 · How to inject

How to insert a GLP-1 needle and inject

Mounjaro is injected under the skin (subcutaneously) once a week, on the same day each week, at any time of day, with or without food.1 Always follow the instructions in your pen's leaflet, which show the exact steps for your device.13

A practical routine looks like this:

  • Wash your hands and check the pen label, strength and appearance of the medicine.
  • Attach a new, sealed needle, removing the protective covers as the leaflet describes.
  • Turn the dose knob until the dose indicator shows the correct dose in the window.
  • Clean and let the chosen skin site dry, then insert the needle straight in and press the button as the leaflet instructs.
  • Follow the pen's instructions on how long to hold, then remove the needle and place it in your sharps container.

Licensed injection sites are the stomach area (at least 5cm from the belly button), the front of the thigh, or the back of the upper arm if someone else gives the injection. Rotate the site with each dose.1 Rotating helps avoid lumps and sore patches forming in one spot.

Each KwikPen contains four weekly doses.

06 · Injecting wrong

Can you inject a GLP-1 pen wrong?

Yes, mistakes are possible, but most are minor and avoidable. The common ones are using the wrong site, not rotating sites, reusing a needle, not attaching it fully, or being unsure whether the full dose went in. A calm routine and the leaflet beside you prevent most of them.

If you think you injected incorrectly, do not take an extra dose to compensate. Contact your prescriber or pharmacist, tell them what happened, and let them advise. For timing mistakes, the missed-dose rule applies: if you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can within 4 days (96 hours) of the scheduled time, then carry on with your usual day. If more than 4 days have passed, skip the missed dose entirely and take the next one on your normal day — never take two doses within 3 days of each other.1

If you notice a side effect that is new or worrying, speak to your prescriber and report it through the Yellow Card scheme.19

07 · Needle disposal

GLP-1 needle disposal: how to bin used needles safely

Put each used needle into a sharps container straight after injecting. Do not recap it by hand, do not leave it on a surface, and never put loose needles in household rubbish or recycling, where they can injure bin workers and children.

A proper sharps container has a secure lid and a fill line. Stop at the line, close the lid fully and do not push needles down with your fingers. Keep it somewhere cool, upright and out of the reach of children and pets. A sharps container is a small, low-cost purchase and is also included with our orders.

What happens to a full container depends on where you live. Some councils collect them, some pharmacies or clinics accept them, and arrangements vary by area. Ask your local council or pharmacy before the container is full so you are not stuck with it. Do not use makeshift containers such as drinks bottles unless official local advice says they are acceptable.

The used pen itself also needs thought. Once the pen is finished, has been in use for 30 days, or has been above 30°C, ask your pharmacy or local service how to dispose of it. Our dedicated guide to GLP-1 needle disposal covers the practical steps in more detail.

08 · Storage and travel

Storing pens and travelling with needles

Keep Mounjaro pens in a fridge at 2–8°C and never freeze them. Once in use, a pen can be kept out of the fridge at a temperature not above 30°C for up to 30 days after first use — useful for short trips — and must then be thrown away. Do not use a pen that has been above 30°C or has been frozen. Keep the pen cap on to protect it from light, and never use a pen that has been frozen.1

You can fly with Mounjaro. Carry pens in hand luggage (hold luggage can fall below freezing), ideally in a cool bag with the prescription label or a copy of your prescription.1 Pack spare needles and a small travel sharps container in the same bag. Check destination rules for travelling with prescription injectables before you fly.

Unopened pens should be kept in the fridge and keep until the expiry date printed on the box. If an unopened pen has been out of the fridge, check with the pharmacy before using it rather than relying on a remembered day limit, because figures circulating online often come from other countries' labels.13

Needles are not stored the way medicine is. Keep unused needles sealed, dry and clean, and check the pack for its expiry date.

09 · Your first injection

How to take your first GLP-1 shot and what to expect

Everyone starts Mounjaro on 2.5mg once a week. This starting dose is about letting your body adjust, not about weight loss itself.1 Read the leaflet, set out your pen, a new needle and your sharps container, and give yourself time so you are not rushed.

On timing, there is no "best" time of day. Mounjaro works the same morning or evening, with or without food. What matters is the same day each week. Pick a day and time you will remember. Many people choose a weekend morning so early side effects fall on days off.1 If you need to move your day later, you can change your weekly injection day as long as at least 3 days (72 hours) have passed since your last dose.1

The first weeks are about adjustment, and experiences differ widely: some people notice appetite change and early loss in week one, others feel little until a higher dose, and both are normal. Mild nausea, altered appetite and tiredness in the first days after each injection are the commonest early effects and usually settle.1

Do not expect to feel the injection "working" at a precise moment. Early loss includes water weight, so the trend over weeks matters more than any single weigh-in.

10 · Pace of results

How long after a GLP-1 shot do you feel it?

Appetite effects can appear within days for some people and take longer for others, and there is no fixed point at which everyone notices a change. The medicine works by activating the GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties and improve how the body responds to insulin. In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals.1

Weight loss is gradual by design. The first weeks on 2.5mg are an adjustment phase and losses are usually modest. Most measurable progress builds from 5mg onward, month by month.1 After at least 4 weeks the dose increases to 5mg, and can then step up by 2.5mg at a minimum of 4-week intervals (7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg) up to a maximum of 15mg weekly, depending on how you respond and tolerate it.1

In the SURMOUNT-1 trial, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone. These are trial averages and individual results vary.2 Think in months, not days, and judge progress by trend.

Treatment is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Your prescriber reviews your response, so keep your monthly reviews and raise any injection difficulties there.

11 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. If you take the contraceptive pill, Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which can reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed. Switch to a non-oral method, or add a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
What kind of needle for GLP-1?
Use the sterile, disposable pen needle your pen is designed for, usually a short, fine type for injecting just under the skin. Length and gauge are printed on the pack. If you are unsure which suits you or your pen, ask your prescriber or pharmacist, and change to a new needle for every injection.
Where can I get needles for GLP-1?
Needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance are included with every EverydayMeds order, so they arrive with your pen. If you need extra, you can buy pen needles from us or ask your local pharmacy. Always match the needle to your pen and check the pack is sealed and in date.
Can you buy the needles for Ozempic pen?
Pharmacies can supply pen needles, but you should match them to the pen. We do not supply Ozempic, which is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes and is not a UK weight-loss medicine, so check that pen's leaflet or ask a pharmacist which needle it is designed for. Do not force a needle onto a pen it does not fit, and avoid sellers offering to supply without a prescription.
How do you inject GLP-1?
Attach a new needle, dial the dose until the correct number shows in the window, and inject under the skin following the pen's leaflet. Mounjaro is injected once a week on the same day, at any time of day, with or without food. Rotate between the stomach, thigh and, if someone else injects, the upper arm.
Can you inject GLP-1 wrong?
Yes, but most mistakes are minor, such as reusing a needle or not rotating sites. Never take an extra dose to make up for doubt. If you think something went wrong, contact your prescriber or pharmacist for advice.
How do I take my first GLP-1 shot?
Read the leaflet, set out your pen, a new needle and a sharps container, then follow the steps calmly. Mounjaro starts at 2.5mg once a week, which lets your body adjust rather than driving weight loss. Choose a day and time you will remember and stick with it each week.
What time of day is best to take a GLP-1 shot?
There is no best time of day. Mounjaro works the same in the morning or evening, with or without food. What matters is injecting on the same day each week. Many people choose a weekend morning so early side effects fall on days off, but choose whatever you will reliably remember.
What to expect in the first week of GLP-1?
Experiences differ widely. Some people notice appetite change and early loss in the first week, while others feel little until a higher dose, and both are normal. Mild nausea, altered appetite and tiredness in the first days after each injection are the commonest early effects and usually settle.
How long after a GLP-1 shot do you feel it?
There is no fixed moment. Some people notice reduced hunger within days, others later. Weight loss builds gradually, with most measurable progress from 5mg onward, month by month. Trials measured results at 72 weeks, so think in months and judge by trend rather than single weigh-ins.
How do I dispose of GLP-1 needles?
Place each used needle in a sharps container straight after injecting, close the lid at the fill line, and keep it away from children. Do not put loose needles in household bins. Ask your local council or pharmacy how to hand in a full container, as arrangements vary by area.
