GLP-1 Flu: What It Means and What to Do (October 2026)

"GLP-1 flu" is a popular nickname, not a medical diagnosis: it is not influenza, and "flu" is not a listed side effect in the UK patient leaflet, although tiredness, feeling sick and stomach pain are. Some people feel tired or queasy around injection day or after a dose change, and real viral illnesses can also coincide with treatment. If you feel unwell, speak to your prescriber rather than guessing. Information current as of October 2026.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • "GLP-1 flu" is a social-media term, not a diagnosis and not influenza.
  • Feeling rough after an injection or dose change is worth reporting to your prescriber, not toughing out silently.
  • Because Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, a genuine stomach bug can be harder to cope with.
  • Ask your prescriber or pharmacist before skipping a dose when you are ill.
  • You can report any suspected side effect through the Yellow Card scheme.
In this guide

01 · The core answer

Is GLP-1 flu real?

The name is real; the condition is not a recognised one. "Ozempic flu" and "GLP-1 flu" are informal labels. The UK patient leaflet does not list "flu", but it does list feeling sick, feeling tired and stomach pain as very common side effects.

That does not mean your symptoms are imaginary. Feeling unwell has many possible causes, including an ordinary virus, dehydration, eating much less than usual, poor sleep or an unrelated condition. The sensible step is to tell your prescriber what you are feeling and when it started in relation to your injection.

02 · Your next step

What should you do if you feel unwell on Mounjaro?

Contact your prescribing team, especially if symptoms are new, severe, persistent or getting worse. Our aftercare includes ongoing monthly reviews and side-effect support, and a guide to flu-like symptoms on GLP-1s goes into more detail.

Do not change your dose on your own. The prescriber can advise whether to take, delay or adjust your next weekly injection. If you are still deciding on treatment, our weight loss clinic explains how a consultation works.

03 · Why the stomach matters

Why your stomach matters when you are ill

Tirzepatide activates two gut-hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1, and together these help regulate appetite and slow how quickly the stomach empties.1 That slower emptying is part of why most people feel fuller sooner.

It is also why a genuine stomach bug, such as norovirus, deserves care while on treatment. If you are being sick or cannot keep fluids down, contact your clinical team — dehydration needs medical help straight away.

Sip fluids little and often, and ask your prescriber or pharmacist for advice.

04 · Colds, flu and vaccines

Colds, flu jabs and your weekly dose

The honest answer is to ask your prescriber, especially if you are eating and drinking much less than usual.

The patient information leaflet is the place to check anything about taking other medicines alongside Mounjaro, and your pharmacist can help with over-the-counter cold remedies.13 We cover vaccination in our flu vaccine and Mounjaro guide. Tell whoever gives your jab that you are on a weekly injectable.

If you have lost your appetite during a real flu, see whether flu suppresses appetite for context on separating illness from medicine.

05 · Stopping and clearance

Can coming off a GLP-1 make you sick?

Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system. There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1

If you feel unwell after stopping, it is worth getting checked, because the cause may be something unrelated.

06 · Reporting symptoms

How to report a suspected side effect

Any suspected side effect can be reported through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme, whether or not you are sure the medicine caused it.19 Reports help regulators spot patterns that individual patients cannot.

Be wary of anyone offering to supply without a consultation or prescription. Counterfeit medicines are a known concern, and the MHRA publishes alerts.7 Our Mounjaro comes through official LillyDirect supply and is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a prescription-only medicine, used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice. Seek immediate medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis).

07 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

How ordering works

How ordering works at EverydayMeds

Three steps, with our pharmacy team alongside you.

  1. EverydayMeds online consultation on a mobile phone

    Step 1: Online consultation — 5–10 minutes

Complete a confidential health questionnaire covering BMI, medical history and current medication. No payment is taken until you're approved.

  2. A clinician ready to review an online consultation

Step 2: Prescriber review — usually same day

A UK registered prescriber checks your suitability against the licensed criteria (BMI ≥30, or ≥27 with a weight-related condition) and contraindications, and confirms your starting dose.

  3. An EverydayMeds delivery box

    Step 3: Next-day tracked delivery

Dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy in temperature-controlled packaging with needles and a sharps bin included. Orders approved by 3pm for next-day tracked delivery.

Afterwards you're not on your own: dose-change reviews are built in before each step up, our pharmacist team is available for side-effect questions, and repeat orders re-check suitability rather than auto-shipping.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Can GLP-1 make you feel like the flu?
"Flu" is not listed as a side effect in the UK Mounjaro patient leaflet, but feeling tired, feeling sick and stomach pain are listed as very common side effects. Some people feel run-down around injections or dose changes, but the cause may be something else entirely. Tell your prescriber about new symptoms and report them through the Yellow Card scheme.
Can Mounjaro cause flu-like symptoms?
Flu is not listed as a side effect in the UK Mounjaro patient leaflet, but feeling tired, feeling sick, being sick and stomach pain are very common (may affect more than 1 in 10 people), and feeling unwell can also have other causes, including ordinary viruses. If symptoms are new or worrying, speak to your prescriber and consider a Yellow Card report.
Can semaglutide give you flu-like symptoms?
The same advice applies to Wegovy or Ozempic: tell your prescriber about new symptoms, check the patient leaflet, and report suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme. Ozempic is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes — it is not a UK weight-loss medicine.
Can I take GLP-1 if I have a cold?
Ask your prescriber or pharmacist, as the answer depends on how unwell you are and whether you are eating and drinking. Do not alter your dose yourself. Your pharmacist can also confirm whether cold remedies are suitable alongside your treatment.
Should I skip my GLP-1 if I'm sick?
Contact your prescribing team before deciding. They can advise whether to take, delay or adjust your next weekly dose, particularly if you are vomiting or cannot keep fluids down. Self-adjusting is not recommended, and our monthly reviews include side-effect support.
Can GLP-1 medication worsen symptoms of norovirus?
Because Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, a genuine stomach bug can be harder to cope with. Sip fluids, and if you cannot keep fluids down, contact your clinical team — dehydration needs medical help straight away.
Can going off GLP-1 make you sick?
Tirzepatide takes roughly four to five weeks to clear after a final dose, with nothing needed meanwhile. If you feel unwell after stopping, get it checked, as the cause may be unrelated.
Can GLP-1 mess up your stomach?
Because tirzepatide slows how quickly the stomach empties, digestion can feel different, particularly early on or after dose changes. Persistent or severe stomach symptoms should be discussed with your prescriber. Our flu-like symptoms guide has more.
