GLP-1 Multi-Ingredient Blend Supplements: What They Are (October 2026)

A multi-ingredient “GLP-1 blend” sold online is almost always an over-the-counter dietary supplement, not a GLP-1 medicine. It combines plant extracts, prebiotics, probiotics and minerals, and contains no tirzepatide or semaglutide. Licensed GLP-1 treatments are prescription-only and supplied after a prescriber review. A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • A GLP-1 blend supplement is a dietary product, not a prescription GLP-1 receptor agonist such as tirzepatide or semaglutide.
  • Supplement dosing is not standardised, and these products have not been through the trials that licensed medicines go through.
  • Mounjaro (tirzepatide) activates both GIP and GLP-1 receptors and is licensed in the UK for weight management in adults.
  • Genuine GLP-1 medicines need a prescriber review; anyone offering them without a consultation or prescription is a red flag.
  • If a product label says GLP-1 but gives no medicine name, treat it with caution and ask a pharmacist.
In this guide

01 · The core answer

Is a GLP-1 blend supplement the same as a GLP-1 medicine?

No. A GLP-1 blend supplement is a different category of product from a GLP-1 medicine, even though the name sounds similar. The supplements on online marketplaces typically combine plant extracts such as green tea and hops, plus prebiotics, probiotics, ginger, aloe and minerals like chromium. They are marketed for general metabolic and digestive support.

A GLP-1 medicine is a prescription-only drug containing a specific active ingredient. Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, which is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1.1 A supplement label that borrows the words “GLP-1” does not contain that medicine.

The marketing often uses phrases like “nature’s Ozempic”. That phrase describes a sales pitch, not an established effect of the product.

02 · Side by side

Low cost is not the same as good value. If a product has no demonstrated effect on weight, a small outlay can still be wasted money, and it may delay you from seeking assessment that would help.

03 · What to do next

What should you do if you want a genuine GLP-1 treatment?

Start with an honest look at whether you meet the licensed criteria and talk to a prescriber. Mounjaro is licensed in the UK for weight management in adults and is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.1 Our free online consultation is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, and unsuitable orders are refunded automatically.

If you decide private treatment fits, you can see current strengths and prices on the Mounjaro pen page with consultation. For broader options, including the Wegovy alternative, our weight loss clinic hub compares the routes side by side.

04 · Why the name confuses people

Why the “GLP-1 blend” name confuses people

The name confuses people because the same three characters now describe both a pharmacology class and a marketing slogan. GLP-1 is a natural gut hormone. Medicines that act on its receptor are called GLP-1 receptor agonists. Supplement sellers have borrowed the term because shoppers now recognise it.

Listings that promise a large number of “ingredients in one” are a common pattern. A long ingredient list does not make a product stronger. It usually means a small amount of many things, with no labelled GLP-1 receptor mechanism.

When a listing gives a brand-like name but no named active ingredient, that is a signal to stop and check.

Tirzepatide’s mechanism is stated in its product information: it activates GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which helps regulate appetite and slows how quickly the stomach empties.1 A blend of herbs and probiotics has no such labelled mechanism.

05 · What the ingredients are

What is typically inside a blend supplement?

Typical contents are botanical extracts, gut-health ingredients and minerals. You will often see green tea extract, hops, cinnamon, ginger, aloe, prebiotic fibres, probiotic strains and chromium. Each of these is sold in its own right as a general wellness ingredient.

None of them is a GLP-1 receptor agonist. Dosing is not standardised, and a label alone cannot tell you what you are taking.

Points worth checking on any label:

  • Is a named active medicine listed? If not, it is not a GLP-1 medicine.
  • Does the seller promise specific results? That is a warning sign.
  • Is there a clear manufacturer, batch information and contact route?
  • Do the ingredients interact with medicines you already take? Ask a pharmacist.

Natural does not mean risk-free. Herbal extracts can interact with prescription medicines; a pharmacist can advise. If you take regular medication, a pharmacist can check a label with you in minutes.

The mechanism of some of these ingredients is sometimes linked to cell-energy pathways in marketing copy. If that interests you, we explain the claim in our piece on AMPK and GLP-1 signalling.

06 · How genuine GLP-1 medicines differ

How genuine GLP-1 medicines differ

Genuine GLP-1 medicines have a named active ingredient, a licence, a fixed dose ladder and a prescriber behind them. Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly. In the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes. It comes as a pre-filled multi-dose pen (KwikPen) in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.1

Wegovy (semaglutide) is the other well-known licensed option. Its pens are 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg once weekly, stepping up after 4 weeks on each of 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg and 1.7mg, so the 2.4mg maintenance dose starts from week 17.18 Liraglutide is a daily injection supplied at 6mg/ml, unlike once-weekly Mounjaro and Wegovy.

You can check that a pharmacy is real on the public register. We are registered with the GPhC under 9012878, and you can verify that on the GPhC register entry.12

The licensed medicines have been studied in large trials. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 These are trial averages and individual results vary. Treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.

07 · Safety and who should not use them

Safety questions: side effects, who cannot take GLP-1 and warnings

Mounjaro is not suitable for everyone. You should not take it if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, and it should not be used during pregnancy or while trying to conceive. Your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems. Always share your full medical history and medicine list during consultation. Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. If you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly. Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which can reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed. The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.

You may see the phrase “black box warning” online. That is a US labelling term. UK medicines carry their warnings in the SmPC and leaflet, so those are the documents to read, and a prescriber will talk you through anything relevant to you.

A supplement has no equivalent consultation. Nobody checks your medical history, your current medicines or whether you are pregnant or planning pregnancy before you click buy. That absence of screening is itself the main safety difference.

If you ever have a suspected side effect from any medicine or supplement, you can report it through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19 Discuss any new or worrying symptom with a prescriber or pharmacist rather than waiting.

On the question of whether a GLP-1 medicine is “worth the risk”: that is a personal decision made with a clinician, weighing your health history, your goals and the product information.

08 · Oral liquids, drops and tablets

Oral liquids, drops and tablets sold as GLP-1

Be cautious with any “oral GLP-1 liquid” or drops sold without a prescription. Licensed GLP-1 treatments are injections or prescription tablets, and each has a product licence and a named active ingredient. A liquid or drops with no such name is not one of them.

Licensed tablets do exist. Wegovy tablets (oral semaglutide) and Foundayo (orforglipron) each have their own product information.2021 They are prescription-only and taken as directed in that information, so how to take them is something a prescriber and the leaflet explain, not a seller’s label.

A simple rule applies. If a product claims to be oral GLP-1 but does not require any consultation, it is either a supplement or something worse. Ask a pharmacist before you buy.

09 · Spotting scams and counterfeits

Spotting scams and counterfeit weight-loss products

The main scam signal is a seller offering to supply a prescription GLP-1 medicine without a consultation or prescription. A legitimate prescription route always involves a clinical review. The MHRA publishes counterfeit medicine alerts and runs the Yellow Card scheme for reporting problems.7

Other warning signs:

  • Social media sellers with no pharmacy registration number.
  • Dramatic weight-loss claims or promises of specific results.
  • Unmarked vials, pens without proper packaging, or products with no leaflet.
  • Pressure to pay quickly by bank transfer or gift card.

Before buying from any pharmacy, look it up on the GPhC register. Our Mounjaro comes through official LillyDirect supply, direct from Eli Lilly’s UK distribution, as genuine KwikPens, with free next-day tracked delivery in temperature-controlled packaging.

10 · NHS and private routes

NHS and private routes to a genuine GLP-1 medicine

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).46 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.

If you go private, the sensible comparison is between regulated pharmacies, not between a pharmacy and a supplement. Across the UK pharmacies we track, the cheapest and dearest Mounjaro pens range from £143.96 to £339.00 per month depending on dose and provider (checked 10 October 2026).

After a final dose, tirzepatide takes four to five weeks to clear the system, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1

11 · Other lookalike searches

Other GLP-1 products that are not medicines

GLP-1 has become a label attached to products far outside medicine. You may come across skincare serums, hair products or cosmetic ingredients using the term. A cosmetic serum named in a similar way, such as the topic covered in GLP-1 and Matrixyl skincare claims, is a topical cosmetic, not a hormone-receptor medicine.

The takeaway is consistent: a medicine has a named active ingredient, a licence and a prescriber. Everything else is a different product.

12 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Is a GLP-1 blend supplement the same as Mounjaro?
No. Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine containing tirzepatide, which activates GIP and GLP-1 receptors. A GLP-1 blend supplement is an over-the-counter dietary product made from plant extracts, probiotics and minerals, with no tirzepatide. It is not an established substitute, and it has not been tested to the standard of licensed medicines.
Is GLP-1 the same as Mounjaro?
Not exactly. GLP-1 is a natural gut hormone, while Mounjaro is a medicine. Tirzepatide, the active ingredient in Mounjaro, activates both GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which distinguishes it from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide. So Mounjaro acts on GLP-1 but is not simply GLP-1 itself.
What is the best GLP-1 for weight loss in the UK?
There is no single best option for everyone; the right choice depends on your health, preferences and prescriber advice. Mounjaro and Wegovy are both licensed for weight management.
Who cannot take GLP-1 medicines?
You should not take Mounjaro if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, or during pregnancy or while trying to conceive. Your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems. Always share your full medical history and medicine list during your consultation.
What are the side effects of GLP-1 medicines?
The most common side effects, affecting more than 1 in 10 people, are nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort; most ease within days to a few weeks. Discuss any new symptom with your prescriber, and report suspected side effects through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme. Our prescribing team offers side-effect support as part of ongoing monthly reviews.
How do you take GLP-1 oral liquid?
We do not recommend products sold as oral GLP-1 liquids or drops, because they are not licensed GLP-1 treatments. Licensed options are once-weekly injections or prescription tablets taken as set out in their product information. Ask a pharmacist before buying any liquid with no named medicine.
What does GLP-1 do to your face?
Losing a significant amount of weight quickly can change facial volume, on any method including diet or surgery. Discuss any change that worries you with your prescriber. If you notice a symptom not listed in the patient information leaflet, tell a clinician and report it via Yellow Card.
What is the black box warning for GLP-1?
A black box warning is a US labelling format. UK medicines carry their warnings within the Summary of Product Characteristics and the patient information leaflet instead. A prescriber will go through the relevant warnings with you during the consultation, and you should read the leaflet supplied with your pen.
