A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Mounjaro is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, so training belongs in your plan from the start.
  • Build the week around resistance work, then add moderate cardio and daily walking you can sustain.
  • Protect protein and keep meals small and easy to digest, because the medicine slows how quickly the stomach empties.
  • Start gently on 2.5mg, expect tiredness after injections, and scale training to how you feel.
  • If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea, or have a health condition, speak to your prescriber before changing your routine.
In this guide

01 · The core answer

Can you work out on a GLP-1?

Yes. Exercise is part of the licensed use of Mounjaro, which is prescribed alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.1 In the SURMOUNT-1 trial, people taking tirzepatide did so alongside diet and exercise, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2 Individual results vary.

The practical question is not whether to train but how. Appetite falls, so you eat less, and a lower intake changes how training feels. A routine that suits this phase is built on three things: resistance work, moderate cardio and plenty of ordinary movement.

02 · What to do

A simple weekly structure

Type of activityRole on a GLP-1Examples
Resistance trainingThe priority: keeps you strong and helps protect muscle as weight comes offSquats, rows, press-ups, hinges, resistance bands, dumbbells
Moderate cardioSupports heart health and energy without draining you when intake is lowBrisk walking, cycling, swimming, an easy jog
Daily low-impact movementAdds up across the week and is kind to joints as weight fallsWalking, gentle yoga, stretching, stairs
Rest and recoveryMatters more when you are eating lessSleep, lighter days after injection day

Aim to do resistance work on most weeks' training days, in short sessions you can repeat consistently. Consistency beats intensity, especially in the early weeks.

03 · Your next step

What to do next

If you are already prescribed a GLP-1, start gently and build up. If you are still deciding on treatment, our weight loss clinic explains how a free online consultation works, and you can see current options for the Mounjaro pen there.

04 · Strength training

Strength training on Mounjaro

Resistance exercise two or more times a week is worth prioritising while on a GLP-1. Some of any rapid weight loss comes from lean tissue, and protecting muscle protects your metabolism and strength.

Choose compound movements that use several joints at once: squats or sit-to-stands, hip hinges, rows, presses and carries. Bodyweight, bands and dumbbells are enough. A beginner does not need a gym; a few well-chosen exercises, done with good form and gradually made harder, will do more than an ambitious plan you abandon.

Keep sessions short while you are on the lower doses and your appetite is changing. Stop a set if you feel dizzy or unusually weak, and eat before trying again. If you faint, get medical help straight away. Our related guide on exercising on a GLP-1 goes into more detail on building routines.

05 · Cardio and low impact

Cardio and low-impact movement

Moderate cardio, such as brisk walking, is a sensible part of regular activity on a GLP-1. Think brisk walking, cycling or swimming at a pace where you could still hold a conversation. Daily walking is the easiest habit to keep and carries the lowest risk of overdoing it.

Low-impact options are kind to the joints as your weight changes. Gentle yoga, mobility work and stretching also help on the days when injection side effects leave you flat. Mild nausea, altered appetite and tiredness in the first days after each injection are the commonest early effects and usually settle.13

06 · Fuelling your workouts

How to fuel workouts on a GLP-1

Fuel training with small, protein-led meals you can tolerate, because appetite is lower and the medicine slows how quickly the stomach empties.1 If you are training while eating much less than usual, protein and activity are the two things worth protecting.

Practical habits that tend to help:

  • Plan protein into every meal, even when you are not hungry. Lean meat, fish, eggs, beans and dairy all work, and our page on Greek yoghurt on Mounjaro shows one easy option.
  • Eat something light and easy to digest before training rather than a large meal, which may sit heavily on a slower-emptying stomach.
  • Eat again after a session even if appetite is low, so recovery is not left to chance.
  • Sip fluids through the day, particularly if nausea or reduced eating is making you drink less.
  • Avoid training hard on an empty stomach if you feel light-headed.

If nausea, vomiting or poor appetite is making it difficult to eat enough to train, tell your prescriber rather than pushing through.

07 · Around injection day

Timing workouts around injection day

You can train on any day, but many people notice side effects in the days after each dose. Mild nausea, altered appetite and tiredness are the commonest early effects and usually settle.13 Plan lighter sessions for those days and your harder sessions for when you feel best.

There is no best time of day to inject. Mounjaro works the same morning or evening, with or without food, and what matters is the same day each week.1 Many people choose a weekend morning so early side effects fall on days off, which also keeps training days free of them.

If you change your injection day, you must leave at least 3 days (72 hours) since your last dose.1 If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can within 4 days (96 hours) of the scheduled time; if more than 4 days have passed, skip it and take the next one on your normal day — never take two doses within 3 days of each other.

08 · Doses and plateaus

Dose steps and plateaus

Everyone starts on 2.5mg once a week, and this starting dose is about letting your body adjust, not about weight loss itself.1 Treat those weeks as a time to build the habit of training, not to push hard. Each step up the dose ladder may change your appetite and energy again, so scale sessions to match.

Weight loss on Mounjaro is not linear, and plateaus of a few weeks are normal as the body adapts to a lower weight. Within the licence, the responses are to review food intake honestly, protect protein and activity, check the basics such as sleep and alcohol, and discuss with your prescriber whether a dose step-up is appropriate. A plateau is not a reason to double doses or add unlicensed products.

Trials measured results at 72 weeks, so think in months, not days, and judge progress by trend rather than individual weigh-ins.2 Strength, stamina and how your clothes fit are useful measures alongside the scales.

09 · Health conditions

When to check with a professional first

Speak to your prescriber or GP before starting a new training programme if you have a heart, joint or other long-term health condition.

If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea, doses may need adjusting because of the risk of low blood sugar, and exercise can add to that risk. Do not change those medicines yourself; ask your prescriber or diabetes team. Mounjaro is licensed for weight management and for type 2 diabetes. If you have diabetes, tell your prescriber and your usual diabetes team so care stays joined up.1

Report any new or worrying symptom to your prescriber, and you can report suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.19

10 · Staying on treatment

Building habits that last

The habits you build while on treatment are the ones most likely to matter afterwards. After a final dose, tirzepatide takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1 Whether and when to stop is a decision to take with your prescriber, who reviews your response over time.

Training for strength, eating enough protein and moving daily are the parts of the plan that stay with you. The technology behind GLP-1 medicines explains how they work.

11 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Can I workout on GLP-1?
Yes. Mounjaro is licensed to be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, so exercise is part of the plan. Start gently on the lower doses, include resistance training and moderate cardio, and eat enough to recover. If you have a health condition or take insulin, check with your prescriber first.
What workouts suit someone on a GLP-1?
A mix suits most people: resistance training such as squats, rows and presses, moderate cardio like brisk walking or cycling, and daily low-impact movement. Keep sessions short and repeatable while your appetite is lower, and make them harder gradually as your energy and dose settle.
How do I fuel workouts on a GLP-1?
Eat small, protein-led meals you can tolerate, and have something light before training rather than a large meal. The medicine slows how quickly the stomach empties, so heavy food may feel uncomfortable. Eat again afterwards even if you are not hungry, and speak to your prescriber if nausea stops you eating enough.
What are the most common side effects of GLP-1?
The most common side effects of Mounjaro, affecting more than 1 in 10 people, are nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort. They are most likely when starting or increasing a dose and usually ease within days to a few weeks. If they are interfering with eating or training, tell your prescriber. For severe, persistent stomach pain, get medical help straight away. Report suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.
Is GLP-1 safe?
Mounjaro is a licensed prescription medicine, supplied only after a consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, who checks whether it is suitable for you. Like all medicines it has side effects, listed in the patient information leaflet. Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention: for severe, persistent stomach pain, upper right abdominal pain with fever or yellowing of skin or eyes, or signs of a severe allergic reaction, seek immediate medical help.
Do I have to stay on GLP-1 forever?
There is no fixed answer; it is a decision with your prescriber, who reviews your response over time. After a final dose, tirzepatide takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system. Habits like strength training and regular protein intake are worth keeping whichever way you decide.
Can I use Mounjaro if I have type 1 diabetes and exercise?
Speak to your diabetes care team, because exercise affects blood sugar and plans must be individual. Mounjaro is licensed for weight management and type 2 diabetes. If you use insulin, doses may need adjusting around activity, so never change them yourself without professional advice.
How do I start GLP-1 for weight loss in the UK?
Complete a free online consultation, which a GPhC-registered prescriber reviews to decide whether treatment is suitable. If approved, everyone begins on 2.5mg once a week and steps up gradually. See our weight loss clinic page for how the process works and what is involved.
