GLP-1 Plus: What It Is and Whether It Works (October 2026)
"GLP-1 Plus" is normally the name of an over-the-counter supplement, not a prescription GLP-1 medicine. Brands such as Plus+Ultra and Epigenetics sell capsules or powders under similar names. They are not regulated as weight-loss treatments and have no trial evidence comparable to tirzepatide or semaglutide.20 Licensed GLP-1 treatment needs a prescriber's review.

A quick overview
What to know
before you start.
-
"GLP-1 Plus" is a marketing name, usually for a supplement. It is not a medicine and not the same thing as Mounjaro, Wegovy or Ozempic.
-
Supplements sold as natural GLP-1 boosters are not equivalents and are not substitutes for prescribed treatment.
-
Licensed options include Mounjaro and Wegovy injections and, now, two GLP-1 tablets. All are prescription-only.
-
If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea, speak to your prescriber before changing anything, as doses may need adjusting.
In this guide
01 · The core answer
What is GLP-1 Plus?
GLP-1 Plus is a product name, not a medicine. It is used by several supplement sellers for capsules, powders or sachets marketed to support appetite, gut health or blood sugar. There is no single standard formula, so two products with similar names can contain quite different things. Always read the label of the exact product you are looking at.
Many of these products are marketed around ingredients such as berberine, probiotics or fibre blends. They are described as supporting the gut-brain pathway or natural fullness. That is marketing language. Supplements of this type are not medicines, are not regulated for this use and have no comparable trial evidence.20
The name also confuses people because the real GLP-1 hormone is a genuine gut hormone. Prescription medicines imitate it. A supplement that borrows the term does not copy the hormone, and it does not deliver the effect that licensed medicines have shown in trials.
02 · Side by side
GLP-1 Plus supplements versus prescription GLP-1 treatment
| Question | "GLP-1 Plus" style supplement | Prescription GLP-1 treatment |
|---|---|---|
| What is it? | A dietary supplement with a marketing name | A licensed medicine such as tirzepatide or semaglutide |
| Does it act on GLP-1 receptors? | Not as the licensed medicines do; "natural GLP-1 boosters" are not equivalents | Yes. Tirzepatide activates GIP and GLP-1 receptors, and semaglutide acts on GLP-1 |
| Trial evidence for weight loss | None comparable | Large named trials, such as SURMOUNT-1 for tirzepatide |
| Clinical assessment | None; available without a consultation | Reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber |
| Dosing | Not standardised | Set by the licence, with stepped titration |
| Cost framing | Low-cost supplement, no clinical oversight | Varies by medicine and dose; see our live prices |
03 · Your next step
Is this relevant to you, and what should you do next?
If you want a supplement for general digestive health, that is a personal choice. If your goal is meaningful weight loss, a supplement is a different category from the medicines that have been tested for it. Judge it that way, not by the name on the tub.
If you meet the licensed criteria and want clinically proven treatment, the next step is a free online consultation. The Mounjaro pen starts at £169.99 for the 2.5mg dose; new customers save £40 on their first order with code FIRST40. Our weight loss clinic page explains the wider options, including Wegovy.
04 · Natural GLP-1 claims
Natural GLP-1 claims: what to be sceptical of
Be sceptical of any product that says it boosts, mimics or replaces GLP-1 and promises dramatic weight-loss claims. "Natural GLP-1" supplements, such as berberine products, are not medicines, are not regulated for this use and have no comparable trial evidence.20
Sellers often borrow the names of prescription drugs, such as the phrase "nature's Ozempic". That borrows credibility without borrowing the evidence.
A few questions help you test any claim:
- Is there a named, published trial of the finished product, not just of one ingredient in isolation?
- Does the seller explain who should not take it, or does it suit everyone?
- Is anyone reviewing your health history before you buy?
- Does the advert promise specific results? Genuine clinical information says results vary.
Most supplement pages fail these tests. That does not make every ingredient harmful. It means you are buying without the oversight, evidence or accountability that come with a licensed medicine.
05 · NAD and other add-ons
NAD+ and GLP-1: do they go together?
NAD+ and GLP-1 are different things, and combining their names does not create a proven combination. NAD+ is a molecule involved in how cells produce energy. It is sold as a supplement and sometimes marketed alongside GLP-1 products as a way to support energy or ageing.
There is no evidence that an NAD+ supplement adds to, replaces or improves a GLP-1 medicine. If a product pairs NAD+ with GLP-1 language, treat it as a marketing bundle.
Unlicensed combinations and injectable products sold outside the regulated system carry extra risk. Anyone offering to supply a prescription medicine without a consultation or prescription is a warning sign. Check the seller on the GPhC register before buying, and report suspected counterfeit products or side effects through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.7
If you already take supplements and are considering a prescription GLP-1 medicine, tell the prescriber. No supplement is required with Mounjaro, but eating much less can leave gaps, so a standard daily multivitamin is a reasonable safety net. Discuss anything beyond that with a pharmacist. Oral supplements, like other oral products, may be absorbed more slowly when you start treatment.
06 · Reviews and brand claims
GLP-1 Plus reviews: how to read them
Reviews of GLP-1 Plus products tell you about customer service and delivery more reliably than they tell you about effectiveness. Experience with a supplement does not tell you how a licensed medicine would work for you.
Our guide to Steiger Pro reviews on Trustpilot explains what such ratings can and cannot show.
When reading any review of a supplement:
- Look for whether the reviewer says what else they changed, such as diet, exercise or a prescription medicine.
- Be wary of reviews that quote specific results. Individual results vary even with licensed treatment.
- Check whether the seller has a real, checkable address, return terms and contact details.
- Treat before-and-after photographs and influencer posts as advertising.
For a pharmacy, you can do something better than reading reviews. The GPhC public register lets you confirm that a pharmacy is registered. Ours is registered with the GPhC under number 9012878.12
07 · DPP-4 and insulin
GLP-1 with DPP-4 inhibitors or insulin
Combining GLP-1 treatment with other diabetes medicines is a decision for your prescriber or diabetes team, not something to settle from a supplement label.
For insulin and sulfonylureas, the position is clear: doses may need adjusting because of the risk of low blood sugar. Alcohol also increases the risk of low blood sugar if you take insulin or a sulfonylurea.1 Tell the prescriber about every medicine and supplement you take, including over-the-counter products, before starting treatment.
Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1 Which licence applies, and what else you take, shapes the safe plan.
08 · Licensed GLP-1 options
The licensed GLP-1 options in the UK
If your interest is real GLP-1 treatment, the licensed options are injections and, since 2026, tablets. All are prescription-only.
Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a once-weekly injectable made by Eli Lilly. It is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes, and comes as a pre-filled multi-dose KwikPen in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.1 Tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1
In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone. These are trial averages. Individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2
Wegovy (semaglutide) is a once-weekly injection with pens of 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg. Titration steps up after at least four weeks, reaching the 2.4mg maintenance dose from week 17.18 You can see the Wegovy pen if you want to compare. SURMOUNT-5 is the trial that compared tirzepatide directly with injected semaglutide.15
Wegovy tablets and Foundayo are once-daily GLP-1 tablets. Wegovy tablets contain semaglutide and need a strict empty-stomach routine. Foundayo contains orforglipron, can be taken at any time of day, with or without food and without water restrictions.
There is no tablet form of Mounjaro. Tirzepatide is injection-only in the UK.1 Other licensed options work differently: orlistat blocks some dietary fat absorption and produces smaller average losses, and Saxenda (liraglutide) is a daily injection.
09 · Tablets compared
GLP-1 tablets: what the trials show
Each tablet has its own trial, and the results should not be set against each other or against Mounjaro as if they were head to head.
In the OASIS 4 trial, adults taking semaglutide 25mg tablets for 64 weeks lost on average 13.6% of their body weight, compared with 2.2% on placebo. The most common side effects are digestive: nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, indigestion and stomach pain, along with headache and tiredness. Gallstones and hair loss are listed as common.22
In the ATTAIN-1 trial of 3,127 adults without type 2 diabetes, people taking the highest dose of orforglipron for 72 weeks lost on average 12.4% of their body weight, compared with 0.9% on placebo. The trial used capsules, and the UK 17.2mg tablet corresponds to the highest trial dose, so tablet and capsule doses are not comparable milligram for milligram.23
No trial has compared Mounjaro directly with either tablet. The practical differences matter as much as the averages: Wegovy tablets need a strict empty-stomach routine every morning, Foundayo has no food or water rules, and Mounjaro needs one injection a week. A prescriber will check which option is suitable for your health, your other medicines and your routine.21
Foundayo may make oral contraceptive pills less effective: switch to a non-oral method or add a barrier method for 30 days after starting and for 30 days after each dose increase.21
10 · Safety and who should not
Safety: who should not take GLP-1 medicines
Whether a GLP-1 medicine is safe for you depends on your health, your other medicines and your history, which is why it is prescription-only. You should not take Mounjaro if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, and it should not be used during pregnancy or while trying to conceive. Your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems. Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. Always share your full medical history and medicine list during consultation.
Hydration matters more than usual on treatment: reduced appetite means less fluid from food, and vomiting or diarrhoea can dehydrate you quickly, which is the main route to the rare kidney problems reported with this class. If nausea or vomiting is persistent or you cannot keep fluids down, contact your clinical team — dehydration needs prompt attention.
Supplements are not risk-free either. Without an assessment, nobody checks whether a product suits your conditions or interacts with your medicines. If you notice any new symptom on any product, speak to a pharmacist or prescriber and report it through the Yellow Card scheme.19
Treatment is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, and individual results vary. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.
11 · Living well on treatment
Habits that matter more than any supplement
The habits around treatment shape results far more than any capsule. No food is banned on Mounjaro, but some choices make treatment easier and more effective. Prioritise protein at each meal, vegetables and fibre, and regular fluids. Many people feel worse after very fatty, fried or very sugary food, and large portions sit heavily because the stomach empties more slowly. Smaller, slower meals work better.
Some of any rapid weight loss comes from lean tissue, and protecting muscle protects your metabolism, strength and appearance. The two levers are adequate protein, with a source at every meal, and resistance exercise two or more times a week. This matters more, not less, as the dose rises and appetite falls.
Increased physical activity is part of the licence, not an optional extra. The evidence-backed pattern is regular moderate activity, such as brisk walking, plus resistance work for muscle. Start where you are and build. Exercise also protects against regain if you later stop treatment.
There is no interaction between Mounjaro and caffeine, so coffee and tea are fine. "Coffee rules" circulating on social media have no clinical basis. Alcohol has no direct interaction, but drinking on a reduced appetite and emptier stomach can hit harder than usual.

Mounjaro comes through official LillyDirect supply, sourced directly from Eli Lilly's UK distribution, and all six doses are in stock. Ongoing monthly reviews are included, and our free GLPTrackr app helps you track your journey.
NHS access to Mounjaro is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first. Many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.4
14 · Serious side effects
Serious side effects: when to get help straight away
Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1
