A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • A brand is the product name; the active ingredient is what matters clinically: tirzepatide, semaglutide, liraglutide or orforglipron.
  • Mounjaro is a once-weekly pen that activates both GIP and GLP-1 receptors, unlike single-action semaglutide brands.
  • Saxenda and similar liraglutide products are daily injections, unlike once-weekly Mounjaro and Wegovy.
  • All of these are prescription-only: they need a consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.

01 · The short answer

Which brands are GLP-1 medicines in the UK?

The GLP-1 brands you are most likely to meet in the UK are Mounjaro, Wegovy, Ozempic and Saxenda, plus newer oral options. The ingredient, not the brand, determines how the medicine works.

BrandActive ingredientForm and frequencyWhat to know
MounjaroTirzepatidePre-filled KwikPen, once weeklyActivates GIP and GLP-1 receptors; licensed in the UK for weight management and type 2 diabetes1
WegovySemaglutidePen, once weeklyDose ladder 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg, 2.4mg; 2.4mg is the maintenance dose18
OzempicSemaglutidePen, once weeklyLicensed for type 2 diabetes only; it is not a UK weight-loss medicine, and a regulated UK pharmacy will not supply it for weight loss
Saxenda and similar liraglutide productsLiraglutideDaily injectionSupplied at 6mg/ml; a daily injection, unlike once-weekly Mounjaro and Wegovy

02 · Your next step

Which brand is relevant to you?

The right brand is a prescriber's decision, based on your health history, your goals and what you tolerate. You cannot simply pick from a list, because every product here is prescription-only.

If you are weighing up weight management, the practical question is usually tirzepatide versus semaglutide. Both are licensed, regulated and effective alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity, and neither replaces them. Our weight loss clinic explains how a consultation works, and the Mounjaro pen page shows current prices and availability. The standard 2.5mg starting pen costs £169.99 per month, and a new customer's first 2.5mg pen is £129.99 with code FIRST40.

03 · Brand versus ingredient

Brand name versus active ingredient

A brand name belongs to a manufacturer; the active ingredient is the substance doing the work. Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly.1 Wegovy and Ozempic are two brands of semaglutide.

This matters because the same ingredient can appear under different brands with different licences and dose ladders. Wegovy and Ozempic share an ingredient, yet they are not interchangeable products, and each has its own dosing instructions. Never swap one for another without a prescriber's guidance.

Our tirzepatide brands page covers the Mounjaro ingredient specifically.

04 · Mounjaro (tirzepatide)

Mounjaro: the dual-action brand

Mounjaro is a once-weekly pen that activates both GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which is what sets it apart from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide.1 Together these actions help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties and improve the way the body responds to insulin. Most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.

So strictly speaking, tirzepatide is a GIP and GLP-1 medicine rather than a pure GLP-1 one, though it is routinely grouped under the GLP-1 heading because it acts on that receptor.

It comes as a multi-dose KwikPen in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg. Everyone starts on 2.5mg once a week, which is about letting your body adjust rather than weight loss itself. After at least four weeks the dose rises to 5mg, then can step up in 2.5mg increments at minimum four-week intervals, to a maximum of 15mg weekly. Many people settle at 5mg, 10mg or 15mg; higher is not automatically better.

In the SURMOUNT-1 trial, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone. These are trial averages, individual results vary, and the medicine works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2

05 · Wegovy and Ozempic

Wegovy and Ozempic: the semaglutide brands

Wegovy and Ozempic are both semaglutide, a single-action GLP-1 medicine given as a once-weekly injection. They are different products, so the brand name on your prescription matters.

Wegovy's pens come in 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg strengths. The 2.4mg dose is the licensed maintenance dose for weight management.18 You can see current availability on the Wegovy pen page, where a first pen is £99.99 as a first-order price.

Ozempic is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes only; it is not a UK weight-loss medicine, and prescribing it privately for weight loss is off-label. A regulated UK pharmacy will not supply Ozempic for weight loss. NHS access to Wegovy runs through specialist weight-management services; ask your GP.

06 · Liraglutide and tablets

Saxenda, liraglutide and the tablet options

Liraglutide, sold as Saxenda and in products such as Erly, is a daily injection supplied at a concentration of 6mg per millilitre. That daily routine is the main practical difference from once-weekly Mounjaro and Wegovy.

Oral options now exist too. Wegovy tablets contain oral semaglutide, and Foundayo contains orforglipron, taken as a film-coated tablet.2021 Tablets suit people who dislike needles, but their trial results should not be compared with the injections as though they were head to head. Check each product page for current prices and availability.

If you want a wider view of needle-based options, our guide to weight loss injection brands compares the pens side by side.

07 · Choosing between brands

How to choose between GLP-1 brands

The brand a prescriber recommends depends on your health history, other medicines and what you have tolerated before. A good consultation covers all of that, not just your BMI.

Practical factors worth raising include: how often you are willing to inject (daily versus weekly), whether you want a pen or a tablet, your current medicines and how you handled earlier treatments. Because tirzepatide slows stomach emptying, it can affect how quickly some oral medicines are absorbed, particularly at the start or when the dose rises. Tell your prescriber about everything you take, especially warfarin or other narrow-margin medicines, insulin or sulfonylureas, where doses may need reducing to avoid low blood sugar.1

Response is also reviewed. If you have lost less than 5% of your starting weight after 6 months on the highest dose you can tolerate, your prescriber will discuss whether continuing or stopping is right for you.

Whichever brand you consider, buy only from a registered pharmacy. We are GPhC-registered (9012878), and you can check any pharmacy on the GPhC register.12

08 · NHS and private access

NHS and private access to GLP-1 brands

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.46

Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting. Private supply is still prescription-only: it follows a free online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, with ongoing monthly reviews. We source Mounjaro through official LillyDirect supply, so you receive genuine KwikPens, and delivery is free, next-day and tracked in temperature-controlled packaging.

Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary, and this page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
What are the main GLP-1 brands?
The main GLP-1 brands in the UK are Mounjaro (tirzepatide), Wegovy and Ozempic (both semaglutide) and Saxenda (liraglutide). Newer tablet options include Wegovy tablets and Foundayo (orforglipron). Mounjaro acts on both GIP and GLP-1 receptors, while the others act on GLP-1 alone. All are prescription-only.
What are the brand names for semaglutide?
Semaglutide is sold as Wegovy (a once-weekly injection) and, in oral form, as Wegovy tablets. Ozempic is also semaglutide, licensed for type 2 diabetes only. They are separate products with their own dose ladders and licences, so they are not interchangeable. Wegovy's ladder runs 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg, stepping up after at least four weeks.
Is there a tablet equivalent to Mounjaro?
There is no tablet containing tirzepatide. Oral GLP-1 options do exist: Wegovy tablets (oral semaglutide) and Foundayo (orforglipron). They are different medicines with their own evidence, and their trial results should not be compared directly with Mounjaro's. Your prescriber can advise whether a tablet suits you.
How much do GLP-1 medications typically cost?
Cost depends on the brand and dose. Across the UK pharmacies we track, Mounjaro pens range from £143.96 to £339.00 per month (checked 10 October 2026). Our standard 2.5mg pen is £169.99 per month.
Is retatrutide better than Mounjaro?
Retatrutide has no UK licence, and Mounjaro must not be combined with unlicensed research peptides, which have no safety data and no regulated supply chain. Mounjaro is a licensed, regulated treatment. Be wary of anyone offering to supply unlicensed products without a consultation or prescription.
Is there a single safest weight-loss drug?
No weight-loss medicine is safe for everyone, so there is no single safest option. Licensed medicines such as Mounjaro and Wegovy come with approved safety information, and a prescriber matches the choice to your health history and other medicines. Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. Report any suspected side effect through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19
Is Mounjaro a GLP-1 medicine?
Mounjaro is usually grouped with GLP-1 medicines, but it is technically dual-action. Tirzepatide activates both GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which distinguishes it from single-action semaglutide brands such as Wegovy and Ozempic.1 The two receptors together help regulate appetite and slow stomach emptying.
Do I need a prescription for any GLP-1 brand?
Yes. Every GLP-1 brand here is prescription-only. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full.
