01 · The core answer
Can GLP-1 medicines help with hypertension?
Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly. GLP-1 medicines are not licensed to treat high blood pressure. In the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1 If your main problem is high blood pressure, your GP has well-established treatments designed for it, and those remain the first-line conversation.
Where GLP-1 treatment becomes relevant is when you also live with excess weight. Weight sits alongside blood pressure in many people's health picture, so a prescriber treating weight will usually want to know your readings. Our page on Mounjaro for hypertension goes deeper on that specific question.
02 · Your decision
Is this relevant to you, and what should you do next?
It is relevant if you have high blood pressure and a weight problem that you are already considering treating. It is much less relevant if you are hoping a GLP-1 injection will replace your blood pressure tablets. It will not, and you should never stop or change a prescribed blood pressure medicine without speaking to the clinician who prescribed it.
A sensible path looks like this. First, keep your latest blood pressure readings handy. Second, check whether you meet the weight criteria for treatment: the licensed range starts with a BMI of 30 or above, or between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure. Third, complete a free consultation so a GPhC-registered prescriber can review your whole medical picture, including any tablets you take.
If you are ready to look at that route, our weight loss clinic explains how it works. The Mounjaro pen starts at a standard price of £169.99 per month for the 2.5mg starter, and new customers save £40 on their first order with code FIRST40. Prices checked 10 October 2026.
| Your situation | Reasonable next step |
|---|---|
| High blood pressure, healthy weight | Speak to your GP about blood pressure treatment; GLP-1 treatment for weight is not designed for you |
| High blood pressure plus excess weight | Discuss weight management with your GP or complete a consultation so a prescriber can review suitability |
| Already on blood pressure tablets and starting a GLP-1 medicine | Tell your prescriber; keep taking your tablets unless told otherwise; keep monitoring |
| Suspected intracranial hypertension | Specialist care; this is not a use of Mounjaro we can advise on |
03 · What GLP-1 medicines are
What GLP-1 medicines are and how they work
GLP-1 medicines mimic a natural gut hormone involved in appetite and blood sugar. Tirzepatide goes a step further. It is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.2
In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet. It is about appetite, stomach emptying and insulin response. Lowering blood pressure is not a licensed use, so any change in blood pressure is best seen as a possible knock-on of weight change rather than a promised effect.
Mounjaro comes as a pre-filled multi-dose pen (KwikPen) in strengths of 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.1 Wegovy, containing semaglutide, is a single-action GLP-1 medicine with its own ladder of 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg. You can compare it on the Wegovy pen page.
04 · Weight loss and blood pressure
How weight loss relates to blood pressure
Weight loss is one of several factors that can influence blood pressure.
What the weight-loss evidence does show is this. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 These are trial averages, and individual results vary.2
That is a weight result, not a blood pressure result. It would be wrong to translate it into a promised drop in your readings. Some people lose weight and see their blood pressure improve markedly. Others see little change. Treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2
Why does this matter practically? If your GP has told you your blood pressure is high and you start losing weight, your readings may change over the following months. That is a good reason to keep getting them checked, so that any medicines you take can be reviewed rather than left unchanged by default.
05 · Can they raise blood pressure?
Can GLP-1 medicines cause high blood pressure?
High blood pressure is not on the list of side effects in the UK Mounjaro patient leaflet. Tell your prescriber about any new or lasting symptom.13 Our dedicated page on whether Mounjaro causes hypertension looks at the question from that angle.
The same caution applies to Wegovy, which people often ask about. Check the product's leaflet for its listed effects, and do not rely on forum posts or social media for answers. If you notice a new symptom after starting treatment, such as a pounding headache or an unusually high home reading, tell your prescriber. Get medical help straight away for a racing heart, and for breathing problems or rapid swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, which can be signs of a severe allergic reaction. Your prescriber can look at the whole picture, including other medicines, caffeine, stress, sleep and salt intake, all of which can move a reading.
You can also report suspected side effects yourself through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19 Reports help regulators spot patterns, and you do not need to be certain the medicine caused the problem to make one.
If you ever have a very high reading together with chest pain, severe headache, confusion, or vision changes, treat it as an emergency and get medical help straight away rather than waiting for a pharmacy callback.
06 · Intracranial hypertension
GLP-1 and intracranial hypertension: a different condition
Intracranial hypertension is raised pressure inside the skull, which is a different problem from high blood pressure in your arteries. Idiopathic intracranial hypertension, often shortened to IIH, is a specialist neurological and ophthalmic condition, usually managed by a hospital team.
Is a GLP-1 medicine a treatment for it? Not as a licensed use. Anything said about this on the open internet should be treated as a question for your specialist, not a reason to start a medicine.
Weight is often discussed in IIH care, so some specialists may talk to patients about weight management. If that applies to you, the decision belongs with the clinician who knows your scans, eye tests and symptoms. A pharmacy consultation for weight treatment is not a substitute.
A new persistent headache, changes in vision or whooshing sounds in the ears need assessment. Get medical help straight away if you have sudden vision loss. If you suspect a medicine has caused a new symptom, you can report it via the Yellow Card scheme.19
Researchers are studying many possible roles for this drug class beyond weight and diabetes. We cover one such area in our piece on GLP-1 and remyelination, which shows how early-stage ideas differ from approved treatment.
07 · Taking it with blood pressure tablets
Taking GLP-1 treatment alongside blood pressure medicines
Tell your prescriber about every blood pressure medicine you take before starting treatment. This is standard for any prescription, and your consultation asks about it. Your answers are reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, not a scoring script, and an order that is unsuitable is refunded automatically.
Do not stop your tablets because you have started an injection. Equally, do not assume your current dose will remain right for ever. If your weight changes substantially, your GP may want to review your medicines, and home readings help that conversation.
Ask a pharmacist or prescriber about your particular tablets.
One general point is relevant. Tirzepatide slows how quickly the stomach empties.2 If you are on oral medicines of any kind and develop vomiting or diarrhoea on treatment, talk to your prescriber rather than guessing about how your tablets are being absorbed or whether to skip them.
Staying with a treatment plan matters too, and our guide to GLP-1 adherence covers practical ways to do that.
08 · Monitoring at home
Monitoring blood pressure while you lose weight
A validated upper-arm home monitor and a simple written log are the most useful tools you can have. Take readings at similar times of day, seated and rested, and bring the log to your GP or pharmacist. A single odd reading means little. A pattern over weeks means a lot.
GLPTrackr, our free companion app for tracking a GLP-1 journey on iOS and Android, can sit alongside your own notes on doses, weight and how you feel. It does not replace a blood pressure monitor, but it helps you spot how changes line up.
Our prescribing team carries out ongoing monthly reviews, dose-titration and follow-up assessments, with side-effect support. Share your readings at those reviews. If your numbers are rising, or you feel unwell, your prescriber can advise on whether to pause an increase while you speak to your GP.
Mounjaro starts at 2.5mg and steps up after at least 4 weeks on each dose, depending on how you respond. Changes in weight tend to build gradually, so give any assessment of your blood pressure a fair stretch of time rather than judging it after a single pen.09 · Other medicines and claims
Newer drugs, supplements and quick fixes
Be cautious about patches and gut-health products promoted as natural alternatives to GLP-1 medicines. See our reality checks on the GLP-1 plaster and the GLP-1 prebiotic. Low-cost supplements with no clinical oversight are not a substitute for treatment.
You may also have seen the so-called seven-second trick, lists of the worst foods, or drinks said to lower blood pressure quickly. No trick or drink replaces medical assessment. If your readings are persistently high, a clinician should check them. Your GP or pharmacist can give you personalised diet advice, which is better than a generic list.
Likewise, high blood pressure is often linked with diabetes in the same person, and each can make the other harder to manage. That is a good reason to have both looked at together by a clinician.
If you wonder whether these medicines are overhyped, our honest page asks is GLP-1 a con and looks at what the evidence does and does not support.
10 · Serious side effects
Serious side effects: when to get help straight away
Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1
11 · NHS and private access
NHS and private routes to treatment
Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).46 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.
If you have high blood pressure, mention it to your GP when you ask about NHS weight services, because it may count as a weight-related condition. Private treatment through a registered pharmacy is the alternative. EverydayMeds is GPhC-registered (9012878), and our Mounjaro comes through official LillyDirect supply, sourced directly from Eli Lilly, with free next-day tracked delivery and a free consultation.
Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.
