Foods That Promote GLP-1: What Actually Helps (October 2026)
Protein-rich foods, soluble fibre and healthy fats are the foods most often said to promote your body's own GLP-1: eggs, fish, Greek yoghurt, oats, beans, lentils, olive oil and nuts. The effect is modest and food cannot match a prescribed GLP-1 medicine. Guidance current as of October 2026.

A quick overview
What to know
before you start.
-
Protein, soluble fibre and unsaturated fats are the food groups most often linked with gut-hormone release, and they are also sensible everyday choices.
-
Food works gently and indirectly. It is far less powerful than a licensed GLP-1 medicine such as Mounjaro.
-
No food is banned on Mounjaro, but smaller, slower, protein-first meals tend to suit treatment best.
-
Supplements sold as natural GLP-1 boosters are not equivalents and not substitutes for prescribed treatment.
-
Tea and coffee are fine on treatment, but no drink has been shown to replace medicine.

01 · The core answer
What foods promote GLP-1?
The foods most often named are protein sources, soluble-fibre foods and unsaturated fats. They overlap heavily with ordinary healthy-eating advice, which is the honest way to read the claim: build meals around them because they are filling and nutritious, not because they act like a drug.
GLP-1 is one of the natural gut hormones that help regulate appetite and slow how quickly the stomach empties.1 Eating triggers some release of it in everyone. Whether a particular food changes that in a way you would notice day to day is a different question.
| Food group | Examples | Why it is mentioned | Practical note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lean protein | Eggs, fish, chicken, turkey, Greek yoghurt, cottage cheese | Protein is commonly linked with fullness and gut-hormone release | Also supports muscle when appetite is low |
| Soluble fibre | Oats, barley, beans, lentils, chickpeas | Fermented by gut bacteria, which is said to signal gut cells | Build up gradually to avoid bloating |
| Vegetables | Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, leafy greens | Fibre and bulk for fuller meals | Cooked veg is often gentler on a slow stomach |
| Unsaturated fats | Olive oil, avocado, nuts, oily fish | Fats are linked with gut-hormone signalling | Small portions; they are calorie-dense |
| Fermented foods | Plain yoghurt, kefir | Support a varied gut microbiome | Choose unsweetened versions |
Treat the table as a shopping prompt, not a prescription. The reasons given are general explanations rather than proven, dose-specific effects, and individual responses differ.
02 · Is this relevant to you?
Food versus a GLP-1 medicine
Food nudges a natural process; a GLP-1 medicine activates the receptors directly and continuously. That is why diet alone rarely produces the results seen in trials of licensed treatments, which work alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2
03 · Protein and eggs
Protein, eggs and GLP-1
Protein is a sensible all-round answer to this question, and eggs are a reasonable everyday source. Do eggs increase GLP-1? Protein foods are generally associated with gut-hormone release and fullness, but no single food is a booster in its own right.
Can you eat scrambled eggs on a GLP-1 medicine? Yes. No food is banned on Mounjaro. Many people feel worse after very fatty, fried or very sugary food, so scrambled with little added butter is usually easier than a large fry-up. Smaller, slower meals tend to work better.11
Other useful protein choices include fish, poultry, Greek yoghurt, cottage cheese, tofu and pulses. Aim to include a protein source at every meal. That matters on treatment because muscle protection depends on it, and it is harder when appetite is low. We cover the wider picture in our guide to foods that support GLP-1.
04 · Fibre and gut bacteria
Fibre, prebiotics and your gut
Soluble fibre is the second pillar. Oats, barley, beans, lentils and chickpeas are the classic examples, with vegetables such as broccoli and Brussels sprouts adding bulk. The common explanation is that gut bacteria ferment these fibres and the by-products signal cells in the gut. It is a plausible, widely repeated mechanism, but the size of the effect on your own GLP-1 is unclear.
What is certain is that vegetables and fibre are part of sensible eating on treatment: prioritise protein at each meal, vegetables and fibre, and regular fluids.11
Practical tips:
- Add fibre gradually; a sudden jump can cause wind and bloating.
- Pair beans or lentils with protein so the meal stays balanced.
- Drink enough water as fibre intake rises.
- If a food sits heavily, try a smaller portion rather than cutting the whole group.

05 · Healthy fats
Healthy fats: olive oil, avocado and nuts
Unsaturated fats are the third group commonly listed: extra virgin olive oil, avocado, nuts and oily fish. They are linked with gut-hormone signalling, and they also make meals more satisfying.
The catch is calories. Fats are energy-dense, and treatment is licensed alongside a reduced-calorie diet, so the aim is a sustainable deficit, not a perfect food list.11 A drizzle of oil or a small handful of nuts fits; a large pile does not. And because the stomach empties more slowly on treatment, very rich, greasy meals are the ones many people regret.
If you want a quick view of what other people mean by the phrase, our page on foods that trigger GLP-1 goes through the same groups.
06 · Tea, coffee and drinks
Does any tea increase GLP-1?
No tea has been shown to raise GLP-1 in a way that matters for weight, so be wary of any drink sold on that promise. The reassuring news is that there is no interaction between Mounjaro and caffeine, so coffee and tea are fine.11
Two practical notes apply. Strong coffee on an empty, slower-emptying stomach can aggravate nausea or reflux for some people. High-calorie coffee drinks are also an easy place for the calorie deficit to leak. "Coffee rules" circulating on social media have no clinical basis.
Water matters more. Drinking enough matters more on Mounjaro than usual, because reduced appetite means less fluid from food. Keep water within reach through the day.
07 · Snacks to buy
Good GLP-1-friendly snacks
The best snacks are protein-led, with some fibre, and easy to portion. Think of them as small meals that keep you away from sugary grazing.
- Plain Greek yoghurt with berries and a few oats
- Boiled eggs
- Cottage cheese with cucumber or oatcakes
- Hummus with raw vegetable sticks
- A small handful of unsalted nuts
- Edamame or roasted chickpeas
- Cold cooked chicken or tinned fish on wholegrain crackers
Read labels on products marketed as "GLP-1 snacks". The phrase has no regulated meaning, and sugar or calorie content can still be high. Many people feel worse after very sugary food, so a bar is not automatically a better choice than a boiled egg.11
08 · Supplements and boosters
Natural boosters and "food that works like Ozempic"
No food works like Ozempic. Ozempic is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes — it is not a UK weight-loss medicine, and prescribing it privately for weight loss is off-label. A food-based diet can support appetite control, but it cannot replicate a prescribed GLP-1 medicine. Supplements sold as "natural GLP-1 boosters" are not equivalents and are not substitutes for prescribed treatment.13
Be sceptical of any low-cost supplement promising dramatic weight-loss claims. Dosing is not standardised, there is no clinical oversight, and cheap availability without assessment is a warning sign, not a recommendation.
No supplement is required with Mounjaro. Eating much less can leave gaps, so a standard daily multivitamin is a reasonable safety net while losing weight; discuss anything beyond that with a pharmacist. Oral supplements, like other oral products, may be absorbed more slowly when you start treatment.13

09 · Eating on Mounjaro
If you are on Mounjaro: what to eat
If you are already on treatment, you do not need to chase GLP-1 foods, because the medicine already activates the receptors. Tirzepatide activates both the GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which helps regulate appetite and slow how quickly the stomach empties.1 Most people feel fuller sooner, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.
Your job is to make that reduced intake count:
- Protein at every meal, to protect muscle.
- Vegetables and fibre for fullness and bowel regularity.
- Regular fluids, because vomiting or diarrhoea can dehydrate you quickly.
- Smaller portions eaten slowly.
Some of any rapid weight loss comes from lean tissue, and protecting muscle protects your metabolism, strength and appearance. Resistance exercise on two or more days a week helps, and this matters more, not less, as the dose rises and appetite falls.11
Alcohol has no direct interaction with Mounjaro, but drinking on a reduced appetite and emptier stomach can hit harder than usual, and it adds calories. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, alcohol increases the risk of low blood sugar.
10 · Getting treatment
When food is not enough
If diet changes are not controlling your appetite, there are two routes. Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first.46 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment.

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a prescription-only medicine, used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.
11 · The bottom line
The bottom line
Foods that promote GLP-1 are, in practice, the foods that make good meals: protein, fibre-rich plants, and modest portions of unsaturated fat. Build plates around them because they keep you full and nourished. Expect a gentle benefit at most, and be wary of anyone selling a food, tea or supplement as a substitute for medicine.
