01 · The short answer
Does Virta prescribe GLP-1 medication?
Virta Health has described GLP-1 medication as part of some of its programmes, alongside its nutrition-led approach. Which programme you can join, and whether medication is included, depends on your employer benefit or health plan. Coverage can change or end, so the only reliable answer comes from Virta or your plan administrator.
02 · Comparison
Virta-style programmes versus the UK route
The main difference is who decides access. In a US employer or insurer programme, your plan largely decides. In the UK, a prescriber decides whether the medicine is suitable for you.
| Question | US employer or insurer programme | UK route |
|---|---|---|
| Who decides access? | Your plan design and the provider's rules | A UK prescriber, against licensed criteria |
| Who confirms terms? | Virta or your plan administrator | The NHS service, or the pharmacy you choose |
| Can coverage end? | It can; confirm with Virta | Private treatment continues while you reorder and remain suitable |
| Medicine | Varies by programme | Mounjaro (tirzepatide) or Wegovy (semaglutide), among others |
03 · Cost
What a GLP-1 costs privately in the UK
The Mounjaro pen costs £169.99 at the 2.5mg starting dose. A new customer saves £40 on their first order at any dose with code FIRST40, and every later order is £25 off the standard price (code DOSE25). All six doses are in stock.
If you step up after 4 weeks on each dose, your first four pens (2.5mg to 10mg) cost £959.96 at standard prices. A first year costs £2,711.88 if you stay on 5mg after your 2.5mg starting pen, up to £3,599.88 if you step up through every dose to 15mg. Your first order is £40 less, and every later order £25 less.
04 · Who prescribes in the UK
Who prescribes GLP-1 medication in the UK?
In the UK, GLP-1 and GIP/GLP-1 medicines are prescription-only, so a qualified prescriber must assess you first. That can be your GP, a specialist such as an endocrinologist, or a prescriber at a regulated online pharmacy. Our guide to which doctors prescribe GLP-1s covers the options in more detail, and a pharmacist prescriber can also be involved.
If your own doctor declines, see what to do when a doctor won't prescribe. The prescriber will review your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether treatment is suitable.1
05 · Licensed eligibility
Who can take Mounjaro, and who cannot?
Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition. Examples are high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. It must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.1
If you fall outside those criteria, or your history raises a concern, the prescriber may decide it is not suitable. Mounjaro is not suitable for everyone. You should not take it if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, and it should not be used during pregnancy or while trying to conceive. Mounjaro should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive, and if you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly. Your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems. Always share your full medical history and medicine list during consultation.13
06 · How Mounjaro works
How Mounjaro works and what trials show
Mounjaro is tirzepatide, a once-weekly injection that activates two gut-hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1. Together they help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties and improve the body's response to insulin. Most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals.1
In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone. For someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg. These are trial averages and individual results vary.2
07 · NHS access
NHS access to Mounjaro
Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition. The primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.46
Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting. Ask your GP where you sit in the local rollout.
08 · Cheaper alternatives
Cheaper alternatives and the "poor man's Ozempic"
"Poor man's Ozempic" and "nature's Ozempic" are nicknames for low-cost supplements such as berberine. They are available cheaply without assessment, have no clinical oversight and are not an established equivalent of a licensed medicine. Dosing is not standardised.
If cost is the concern, compare licensed options instead. A first Wegovy pen costs £99.99 on a first order (see the Wegovy pen), and Mounjaro's first 2.5mg pen is £129.99 with code FIRST40. Tablets such as Wegovy tablets are also licensed; see current tablet prices on the product page. Our weight loss treatments overview sets the options side by side. There is no single "best" weight loss pill; your prescriber can advise which suits you.
09 · How ordering works
How ordering works with us
If you are in the UK and want to be assessed for Mounjaro, ordering takes three steps.
- Free consultation: a short health questionnaire with no charge and no obligation. Start your free consultation.
- Prescriber review: a GPhC-registered prescriber reviews your answers. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full.
- Dispatch and delivery: same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm, then free next-day tracked delivery in temperature-controlled packaging. Saturday delivery is £14.99.
We supply genuine KwikPens through official LillyDirect supply, with monthly reviews and dose-titration support. You can see all doses on the Buy Mounjaro page. Mounjaro is prescription-only, supplied after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. Individual results vary, and this page is information, not medical advice.
How ordering works
How ordering works at EverydayMeds
Three steps, with our pharmacy team alongside you.
Step 1: Online consultation — 5–10 minutes
Complete a confidential health questionnaire covering BMI, medical history and current medication. No payment is taken until you're approved.
Step 2: Prescriber review — usually same day
A UK registered prescriber checks your suitability against the licensed criteria (BMI ≥30, or ≥27 with a weight-related condition) and contraindications, and confirms your starting dose.
Step 3: Next-day tracked delivery
Dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy in temperature-controlled packaging with needles and a sharps bin included. Orders approved by 3pm for next-day tracked delivery.
Prescription and dispatch follow clinical approval. Confirm current delivery options when ordering.
Afterwards you're not on your own: dose-change reviews are built in before each step up, our pharmacist team is available for side-effect questions, and repeat orders re-check suitability rather than auto-shipping.
