A quick overview
What to know
before you start.
-
Strattera is an ADHD medicine, not a weight-loss treatment, and we do not supply it. Its leaflet and your prescriber are the right sources for appetite effects.
-
If your appetite or weight changes noticeably on any medicine, tell the prescriber rather than adjusting the dose yourself.
-
Mounjaro's appetite effect is a documented part of how it works, in a licensed weight-management context.
-
New symptoms can be reported through the Yellow Card scheme.
In this guide
01 · The core answer
Does Strattera affect appetite, and where to check
Appetite is a standard topic to raise with a prescriber when starting Strattera, and the patient information leaflet is the place to confirm how it is described.
The leaflet lists side effects in a structured way and sets out which are more common and which need prompt attention. It also explains what to do if you are worried. The prescriber who started the medicine knows your history, your other treatments and your goals.
02 · What to do next
The decision you are probably facing
Most people asking this question are in one of three positions. Some have just started Strattera and notice they are eating less. Some are thinking about starting it and wonder how it will affect food. A smaller group hope an ADHD medicine might help with weight. Each needs a slightly different next step.
If you have started Strattera and your eating has changed, keep a simple note of what you eat across a typical day and how you feel. Bring it to your next review. Prescribers can adjust timing or plan around meals far better when they see a pattern than when they hear a general worry.
If you are considering starting it, ask your prescriber how they would monitor appetite and weight in your case, and what they would do if eating dropped too far. This is a reasonable question and a good clinician will welcome it.
If you are hoping to lose weight, an ADHD medicine is not a route we would suggest. Weight management has its own licensed treatments, assessed against specific criteria. If that is your goal, our weight loss clinic explains the options, and the Mounjaro consultation page shows how an assessment works for adults who meet the licensed criteria.
03 · At a glance
Strattera compared with appetite-focused medicines
| Question | Strattera (atomoxetine) | Mounjaro (tirzepatide) |
|---|---|---|
| What is it prescribed for? | ADHD, via a specialist or prescriber who manages it | Weight management in adults and type 2 diabetes in the UK1 |
| Is appetite change the intended effect? | Check the leaflet; it is not what the medicine is prescribed for | Yes. Most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals1 |
| Do we supply it? | No | Yes, after a consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber |
They are used for different reasons, and appetite is a main effect of one and a topic to monitor with the other.
04 · Why appetite changes happen
Why ADHD medicines can change how hungry you feel
Many people ask why ADHD medicines reduce appetite. The answer depends on the specific medicine. Different ADHD medicines act on the body in different ways, so assuming that one behaves like another is a common mistake.
This is why a prescriber's review is useful. They can look at the whole picture, including sleep, timing of doses, meals and any other medicines, and suggest what to adjust.
If you want the specific wording for Strattera, open the patient information leaflet or the electronic medicines compendium entry. They describe side effects in regulated language, and they are updated when new safety information appears.
05 · Talking to your prescriber
What to ask your prescriber about appetite
A short, specific list of questions gets better answers than a general worry. These are worth bringing to an appointment or review.
- How will you monitor my weight and eating while I take this?
- What would you consider too much of a change, and what would you do about it?
- Does the time of day I take it matter for appetite and for sleep?
- Is there a way to plan meals around the medicine so I am not skipping food?
- What should I do if the appetite change fades, or if it gets worse?
Individual responses vary widely, and a prescriber who knows you is better placed than a statistic to tell you what is normal for you.
Keep a few days of notes before you go: what you ate, when you took the medicine, how hungry you felt, and how your energy and mood were. Even a rough diary helps. Tell the prescriber about other things you take, including supplements, because they can interact or confuse the picture.
Never stop or change the dose of a prescribed medicine on your own because of appetite alone. If something is troubling you, call the prescriber or the practice and ask for advice. If it feels urgent, contact NHS 111 or your GP.
06 · Evening dosing and other questions
Night-time dosing, withdrawal and other common questions
People often ask whether taking Strattera at night helps with appetite. Timing is a decision for your prescriber, who will follow the product's licensed directions and weigh sleep, side effects and daily routine. Do not move your dose to a different time of day without checking first.
Questions about withdrawal symptoms are similar. If you want to stop, speak to the prescriber first, because they can tell you whether to taper and what to expect. The leaflet also explains what to do if you stop or miss doses.
Another frequent question is how the medicine feels if you do not have ADHD, and whether it is an upper or a downer. Prescription medicines are chosen for a diagnosed condition, and taking them without a diagnosis is unsafe and may be illegal if the medicine is not prescribed to you. If you are curious about the effect of a medicine, the leaflet describes it. If you think you may have ADHD, the route is an assessment, not self-treatment.
The same caution applies to "which organ is it hard on" and "what is the downside" questions. Serious or organ-related warnings are set out in the leaflet in a specific section. Read that section in full and contact your prescriber if you notice any warning sign described there.
07 · Eating well on a medicine that dulls appetite
Practical ways to keep eating well if your appetite drops
If any medicine makes you less hungry, a few general habits help, and they are not specific to one product. They are everyday nutrition steps, not clinical instructions, and your prescriber's advice comes first.
- Eat on a routine. Set mealtimes mean you do not rely on hunger cues that may be quieter.
- Choose nourishing foods. If you eat less overall, make each meal count with protein, wholegrains, fruit and vegetables.
- Keep easy options nearby. Yoghurt, nuts, fruit and sandwiches are simple when cooking feels like effort.
- Drink regularly. Thirst can be missed when attention is elsewhere.
- Notice patterns. If appetite returns later in the day, plan a proper meal then.
For children and teenagers, growth matters, so parents should raise any appetite or weight concern with the prescriber and not wait. Do not try to manage it by restricting or forcing food without clinical advice.
These habits are also reasonable for anyone who tends to forget meals when busy, which many people with ADHD report. Good routines help regardless of medicine.
08 · How Mounjaro differs
How Mounjaro's appetite effect differs
Mounjaro is a different kind of medicine, and appetite is part of why it is used. Tirzepatide activates two natural gut-hormone receptors at once, GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.111 In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.
That effect is the intended one, and it comes with licensed criteria, prescriber oversight and a structured dose increase. If you want to understand the timing, our guides on how Mounjaro suppresses appetite and how long it takes to work go through it.
Mounjaro is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary. It is also a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.
On the NHS, Mounjaro is available, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first.46 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment.
If you take Strattera for ADHD and are also considering weight treatment, do not combine decisions on your own. Tell each prescriber about every medicine you use so they can review the whole picture.
09 · Other appetite medicines
Other things that change appetite
Many substances and medicines change appetite, and they are very different from each other.
- Amphetamines and appetite
- Lorazepam and appetite
- Xanax and appetite
- THC and appetite
- Foods people link with feeling fuller
- Orlistat and appetite
The lesson across all of these is the same. An effect on appetite is not the same as a safe or effective route to weight loss. Controlled medicines, recreational substances and supplements with dramatic weight-loss claims carry risks that a prescriber-led, licensed weight-management plan is designed to avoid.
10 · Reporting side effects
Reporting a new symptom or side effect
If you notice a new symptom on any medicine, tell your prescriber, and consider reporting it through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19 You can report for yourself or for someone you care for. Reports help regulators spot patterns, and you do not need to be sure the medicine caused the symptom.
Counterfeit and unregulated products are also a risk when medicines are bought outside regulated routes, and the MHRA publishes alerts about them.7
For anything that feels severe or sudden, get medical help straight away rather than waiting for a routine review.
11 · Using our service
If you are looking at weight treatment with us
EverydayMeds is a GPhC-registered UK online pharmacy (registration GPhC 9012878). If weight management is your goal, the route starts with a free online consultation, a short health questionnaire with no charge and no obligation.
Approved orders are dispensed by our registered pharmacy, with same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm and free next-day tracked delivery in temperature-controlled packaging. Ongoing monthly reviews, dose-titration and side-effect support are part of the service, and repeat orders re-check suitability.
Be sure to list all your current medicines, including any ADHD treatment, in the consultation.
12 · Serious side effects
Serious side effects: when to get help straight away
Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1
