Does GLP-1 Help Menopause? What It Can and Cannot Do (October 2026)
GLP-1 medicines can help with menopause-related weight gain, but they do not treat menopause itself. Mounjaro is licensed in the UK for weight management and type 2 diabetes, not for hot flushes or other hormonal symptoms, and it can be prescribed alongside HRT. Our guide to Mounjaro and menopause covers the detail. Current as of October 2026.

01 · Core answer
Is a GLP-1 medicine relevant to you in menopause?
A GLP-1 medicine is relevant if you are struggling with weight that has built up around the menopausal transition and you meet the licensed criteria for treatment. It is not relevant if your main problem is hot flushes, night sweats, low mood or poor sleep, because these medicines are not licensed to treat those symptoms. That distinction matters, and it is where many online articles blur the picture.
Weight gain around menopause is common and driven by hormonal and metabolic change, which can make diet-only approaches slower.1 If that describes your situation, a medicine that makes you feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals may make a reduced-calorie diet easier to follow. That is a weight benefit, and it may make you feel better in yourself, but it is a different thing from treating the underlying hormonal change.
Mounjaro's eligibility criteria are the same at any adult age, and it can be prescribed alongside HRT — there is no known interaction, though oral medicines in general can be absorbed more slowly when you start treatment.1 So being menopausal does not rule you in or out. Your BMI, your health conditions and your medical history do that.
02 · Next steps
The decisions most readers are actually facing
Most people reading this are weighing up two separate questions. The first is whether their menopause symptoms are being managed properly. The second is whether weight management treatment is appropriate on top of that. Treat them separately and the picture becomes much clearer.
| Your main concern | Where to start | Where a GLP-1 medicine fits |
|---|---|---|
| Hot flushes, night sweats, mood changes | Your GP or a menopause specialist, who can discuss HRT and other options | Not a treatment for these symptoms |
| Weight gain that diet alone has not shifted | A weight-management assessment against the licensed criteria | May support a reduced-calorie diet if you are eligible |
| Both symptoms and weight | Tell every prescriber about all your medicines, including HRT | Can be prescribed alongside HRT, with no known interaction |
| Unsure whether you are in perimenopause | A GP appointment before any weight-loss treatment decision | Wait until your symptoms are properly assessed |
If weight is your concern, the practical route is an online consultation with a GPhC-registered prescriber.
For a focused look at weight specifically, read our page on Mounjaro and menopause weight gain. If your question is about symptoms, see Mounjaro and menopause symptoms.
03 · Before you decide
What to do before you decide
Start by writing down your symptoms and every medicine you take, including HRT, supplements and anything bought over the counter. Tell your prescriber everything you take, including HRT.1 That list is the most useful thing you can bring to any consultation, because it lets the prescriber judge suitability properly.
Next, be realistic about what you want from treatment. If you want to lose weight and you are eligible, a GLP-1 or GLP-1/GIP medicine is a legitimate option. If you want relief from hot flushes, speak to your GP about menopause treatment first. Many people want both, and the two can be run side by side. Our own overview of whether GLP-1 can help menopause gives another angle.
Finally, remember that treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2

04 · How GLP-1 medicines work
How GLP-1 medicines work
GLP-1 medicines work on appetite and digestion, which is why their benefit is about weight rather than hormones. Understanding the mechanism makes it easier to see why they may help one part of the menopause experience and leave others untouched.
Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly. Tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1 In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.1
Notice what is missing from that description. Nothing in it involves oestrogen, progesterone or the temperature-regulating systems linked to hot flushes. These are gut-hormone medicines. They act on how hungry you feel and how quickly food leaves your stomach. Mounjaro is licensed for weight management and type 2 diabetes, not for hormonal symptoms.
This distinction is useful rather than disappointing. If your weight has crept up and your appetite has changed, a medicine that quietens hunger between meals addresses something real. If your sleep is broken by night sweats, you need a different conversation with a different kind of clinician.
This dual action is what distinguishes Mounjaro from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide (Wegovy/Ozempic).1
Because these are prescription-only medicines, the sensible route is a proper assessment. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.1 That review is where your menopausal status, your other medicines and your goals get weighed up together.
One more practical point on mechanism: because stomach emptying slows, oral medicines can be absorbed more slowly when you start treatment. That is why telling your prescriber about all your tablets matters, HRT included. It is a reason to share information, not a reason for alarm, and the prescribing team can talk through anything that applies to you.
In short, think of a GLP-1 medicine as a tool for appetite and weight, used alongside food and activity changes. It is not a hormone therapy, and it is not a substitute for one.
05 · Menopause and weight gain
Why weight changes around menopause
Weight gain around menopause is common and driven by hormonal and metabolic change, which can make diet-only approaches slower.1
It also explains the frustration. You may be eating much as you always did and moving as much as you always did, yet your body responds differently. That is not a failure of willpower. The hormonal and metabolic background has shifted, and the same effort produces a slower result.
This is also why the question "how do I get rid of menopausal belly fat quickly" needs a cautious answer. There is no quick fix. Rapid-loss promises, whether from supplements or social media, tend to overreach. Steady change, built on diet, activity and, where appropriate, licensed medicine, is the realistic route.
The same applies to the idea that weight gain is inevitable. It is common, but it is not a reason to feel stuck. If your weight is affecting your health or confidence, you can ask for support. That might mean a conversation with your GP, a structured diet and activity plan, or an assessment for treatment if you meet the criteria.
If you are weighing up whether a medicine could fit, our page on Mounjaro for menopause weight gain goes into the practical side. For the wider picture of how these medicines support weight loss in general, read how GLP-1 supports weight loss.
Finally, consider timing. If you are in perimenopause and your symptoms are still unclear, it is worth getting them assessed before making decisions about weight treatment. A clinician can tell you whether other causes, such as thyroid problems, need checking. We would rather you had the full picture than rushed into anything.
The takeaway is that menopause makes weight management harder, not impossible, and support exists for it.
06 · GLP-1 medicines and HRT
Using a GLP-1 medicine alongside HRT
Mounjaro can be prescribed alongside HRT, and there is no known interaction.1
Oral medicines in general can be absorbed more slowly when you start treatment, so it is worth mentioning any tablets you take.
What should you do in practice? Tell your prescriber everything you take, including HRT.1 Include the type, whether it is a tablet, patch, gel or another form, and who prescribed it. If your menopause care is with a specialist, let them know too if you start weight treatment. Joined-up information is what makes safe prescribing possible.
Many readers wonder whether they must choose between HRT and a weight-management medicine. They do not. The two address different things. HRT is a menopause treatment. A GLP-1 or GLP-1/GIP medicine is a weight-management treatment. Used together, each does its own job.
Equally, starting or stopping HRT is a decision for you and your clinician, not something to change because of a weight-loss plan. If you are considering both, raise it at a consultation so the prescriber can see the whole picture.
For more on how Mounjaro sits alongside symptom management, see Mounjaro and menopause symptoms. And if you want to see how we handle ongoing care, our monthly reviews with the prescribing team include dose-titration, follow-up assessments and side-effect support.
Repeat orders re-check suitability and there is no auto-shipping, so any change in your HRT can be flagged at the next review.
07 · What the trial evidence shows
What the trial evidence shows
The main trial evidence for Mounjaro is about weight loss in adults generally, not about menopause specifically. That is an important limit, and it keeps expectations honest.
In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 These are trial averages — individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2
At 72 weeks, 85% of participants on 5mg, 89% on 10mg and 91% on 15mg had lost at least 5% of their body weight. Half of participants on 10mg and 57% on 15mg lost at least 20% of their body weight.2
What do those numbers mean for you? They show what the medicine did on average in a large group of adults taking it with diet and exercise. They do not tell you what will happen to you, and trial averages do not predict your own result. Your response depends on your dose, your diet, your activity and your body.
A worked example helps with scale. For someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg. That is simply arithmetic on a trial average, not a forecast, and many people lose less.
It is also worth noticing the comparison arm. Lifestyle changes alone produced a much smaller average loss over the same period.
Your prescriber will review your progress and your dose with you at regular intervals rather than leaving you to guess.
08 · What GLP-1 medicines don't treat
What GLP-1 medicines do not treat
GLP-1 medicines are not licensed to treat menopause symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats or low mood. In the UK, Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1 Menopause symptom relief is not on that list.
A person who loses weight may sleep or move more comfortably, and that is a welcome knock-on, but it is not the same as the medicine treating the underlying cause of hot flushes.
So what if you notice a change in a symptom after starting treatment? Perhaps a flush feels better, or perhaps it feels worse. Discuss any new or changing symptom with your prescriber, and consider reporting suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.19
For belly weight, the medicine supports overall weight management alongside diet and activity. For symptoms, speak to your GP about menopause treatment, and use our page on Mounjaro and menopause symptoms for more detail.
It is also worth being cautious about celebrity stories. People often ask what well-known women use for menopause. A personal story is not evidence of how a medicine will work for you. Treat it as a conversation starter for your GP rather than a recommendation.
A good rule of thumb is to match the treatment to the problem. Hormonal symptoms go to a clinician who can discuss HRT and other menopause options. Weight goes to a weight-management assessment. The two paths can run in parallel, and a good prescriber will want to know about both.
If you ever feel unwell after starting any medicine, contact your prescriber or GP. For more on what to expect, see our guide to whether Mounjaro helps with menopause.
09 · Eligibility, NHS and private
Eligibility, NHS access and private treatment
Eligibility for Mounjaro is the same at any adult age, so menopause itself neither qualifies nor disqualifies you. What counts is your BMI, your health conditions and a prescriber's judgement of suitability.
On the NHS, Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years.4 NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).4 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.6
If you are unsure whether you qualify on the NHS, ask your GP. They can tell you where local services stand and whether you fit the groups being prioritised. NHS access to Wegovy runs through specialist weight-management services; ask your GP.
If you choose private treatment, here is how ours works. First, you complete a free online consultation, a short health questionnaire with no charge and no obligation. Second, a GPhC-registered prescriber reviews it, not a scoring script. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. Third, our registered pharmacy dispenses your order, with same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm, followed by free next-day tracked delivery in discreet, temperature-controlled packaging.
The consultation is free and the price shown is the price paid, with no hidden fees.
Both NHS and private routes involve a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity alongside the medicine. Whichever you choose, tell the prescriber about your HRT.
10 · Which GLP-1 medicine to consider
Which GLP-1 medicine is good for menopause?
No GLP-1 medicine is licensed or proven specifically for menopause, so the right choice depends on your suitability and goals, not on your menopausal status.
Mounjaro and Wegovy are the two licensed weight-management injections in the UK. Both are once-weekly injections licensed for weight management. They work slightly differently: tirzepatide activates two gut-hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1, while semaglutide is a single-action GLP-1 medicine.1 A prescriber can talk you through which is more suitable.
Doses differ too. Mounjaro comes in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg. Wegovy pens are 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg once weekly, stepping up after at least four weeks and reaching the 2.4mg maintenance dose from week 17, which is the licensed maintenance dose for weight management.18 Titration for both is gradual, and your prescriber sets the pace.
Only the SURMOUNT-5 trial supports a direct tirzepatide-versus-semaglutide comparison.15
There are also daily liraglutide injections, supplied at six milligrams per millilitre, which differ from once-weekly Mounjaro and Wegovy in how often you inject.
Practical factors often decide it. Think about how you feel about weekly injections, your health history, your other medicines including HRT, and cost. You can view the Wegovy pen alongside the Mounjaro option, and our team can help you compare during a consultation.
Avoid supplements marketed as natural alternatives. Low-cost supplements come with no clinical oversight, and dramatic weight-loss claims on them should be treated with caution. A regulated, prescribed medicine is a different category from an over-the-counter product, and our page on GLP-1 and menopause explains why we keep that line clear.
If you are unsure, start with the free consultation. It costs nothing and carries no obligation, and a prescriber will tell you what is suitable.
11 · Safe use and getting support
Safe use and getting support
Safe use starts with an honest consultation and continues with regular reviews. These are prescription medicines, and the way you use them matters as much as whether you take them.
Begin by sharing a full picture. Tell your prescriber everything you take, including HRT.1 Add any other prescriptions, over-the-counter products and supplements. The prescriber uses this to judge whether treatment is suitable and whether anything needs adjusting.
Once treatment begins, you work through the doses gradually. An in-use pen can be kept out of the fridge for up to 30 days (not above 30°C), while unopened pens should be stored in the fridge between 2–8°C until first use and keep until the printed expiry date. The patient information leaflet has full storage instructions.13
Needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance are included with every order, and you should follow the pen's instructions for each injection.
If you notice a side effect, contact your prescriber, and consider reporting it via the Yellow Card scheme.19 This applies to any new symptom, including one you are unsure is linked to the medicine.
Be careful where you buy. Counterfeit and unregulated products are a real risk, and any seller offering to supply without a consultation or prescription should be avoided. EverydayMeds is a GPhC-registered UK online pharmacy, registration GPhC 9012878, and you can verify us on the GPhC register.12
Support does not stop at dispatch. Our aftercare includes ongoing monthly reviews, dose-titration and follow-up assessments by the prescribing team, plus side-effect support. You can reach us Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, by email at support@everydaymeds.co.uk, through the account portal chat, or on 0333 207 0413. The free GLPTrackr app helps you track your journey on iOS and Android.
Payment is by Visa or Mastercard, Klarna or pay-monthly options, with no subscriptions. Repeat orders re-check suitability, so nothing ships automatically.
Individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.
12 · Serious side effects
Serious side effects: when to get help straight away
Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1
