Does GLP-1 Affect Birth Control? What UK Women Need to Know (October 2026)
Yes, for Mounjaro: it slows stomach emptying, which can reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed. The SmPC advises a non-oral method or an added barrier method around starting and each dose increase. This applies to the pill only, so implants, coils and injections are unaffected.1 Wegovy and Foundayo have their own leaflets.

A quick overview
What to know
before you start.
-
Mounjaro can reduce absorption of oral contraceptive pills because it slows stomach emptying; the advice applies to the pill only.
-
Switch to a non-oral method, or add condoms, for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.
-
Implants, coils and contraceptive injections are unaffected by Mounjaro's effect on stomach emptying.
-
Foundayo has its own, longer window: 30 days after starting and after each dose increase. Never apply one medicine's window to another.
-
Never use Mounjaro in pregnancy. Stop it at least one month before trying to conceive, and tell your prescriber promptly if you become pregnant.
In this guide
01 · The core answer
Does GLP-1 medication affect birth control?
It can affect the contraceptive pill, and the effect is about absorption rather than hormones being "cancelled out". Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which can reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed.1 A pill that is absorbed less well may protect you less reliably, so you need a plan before you start.
The product information gives a clear action. The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase. This applies to the pill only — implants, coils and injections are unaffected.1 The regulator's guidance on contraception with GLP-1 and GIP medicines points the same way.7
02 · Your decision
What should you do if you take the pill?
Tell your prescriber which contraception you use before you start. The decision is usually between two routes, and your prescriber can help you choose.
| Your current method | Affected by Mounjaro's slower stomach emptying? | What the product information points to |
|---|---|---|
| Combined or progestogen-only pill | Yes, absorption may be reduced | Switch to a non-oral method, or add condoms, around starting and each dose increase |
| Implant | No | No change needed for this reason |
| Coil | No | No change needed for this reason |
| Contraceptive injection | No | No change needed for this reason |
| Condoms | No | Can be used as the added barrier method |
If you use a method not listed here, ask your prescriber or pharmacist rather than assuming.
If you are weighing up treatment, our guide to taking birth control while on Mounjaro and the page on using Mounjaro with birth control set out the practical steps. You can start with the Mounjaro pen and free consultation, where a GPhC-registered prescriber reviews your medicines and contraception.
03 · Other medicines
Does the answer change for other GLP-1 medicines?
Yes, the wording differs by medicine, so never copy one medicine's rule onto another. Foundayo (orforglipron) may make oral contraceptive pills less effective: switch to a non-oral method or add a barrier method for 30 days after starting and for 30 days after each dose increase.21 That window is specific to Foundayo, and our Foundayo and the pill guide covers it in full.
The Mounjaro window does not apply to Wegovy, whether injection or tablet. For Wegovy, read the contraception section of its own patient leaflet and ask your prescriber or pharmacist which advice applies to your pill. Ozempic is licensed for type 2 diabetes rather than weight management, and a regulated UK pharmacy will not supply it for weight loss.
04 · Why absorption changes
Why Mounjaro can change how the pill is absorbed
Tirzepatide activates two natural gut-hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1 The slower stomach emptying is the reason behind the contraception advice.
Because the stomach empties more slowly, it can affect how quickly some oral medicines are absorbed, particularly when you start treatment or increase the dose.1 A contraceptive pill depends on being absorbed in a predictable way. That is why the advice is tied to starting and to each dose increase, when the effect on stomach emptying is most likely to change.
This is a medicine-absorption issue. It is not about your body weight, and the product information does not attribute it to weight loss.
For the full picture, see our page on whether Mounjaro decreases the effectiveness of birth control, which looks at the same question from the pill's side.
05 · Pill, implant, coil or injection
Which contraceptive methods are affected?
Only the oral pill is affected. The SmPC states that implants, coils and injections are unaffected.1
That gives you practical choices. Some people keep taking the pill and add condoms for the periods the SmPC names. Others move to a non-oral method for the duration of treatment. Your prescriber, GP or sexual health clinic can help you choose what suits your health and preferences.
Think about the dose steps too. Mounjaro doses rise gradually, with at least 4 weeks per dose step depending on how you respond.1 Each increase is another point at which the barrier-method advice applies, so a pill-plus-condoms plan means repeating that cover as you move up. Many people find a non-oral method simpler for this reason.
Never stop a contraceptive without a replacement in place. If you are unsure whether your method counts as oral, ask your pharmacist before your first Mounjaro dose.
06 · Pregnancy and conception
Pregnancy, conception and Mounjaro
Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. If you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly.1
This is why reliable contraception matters while you are on treatment. If you suspect a pregnancy, for example after a missed period or a positive test, stop the medicine and contact your prescriber or GP rather than waiting. Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system. There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1
If you are planning a pregnancy, tell your prescriber at the consultation. They can discuss the timing of stopping treatment and other options. For breastfeeding, current prescribing information indicates minimal transfer of tirzepatide into breast milk, but discuss your circumstances with your prescriber so the decision reflects you.1
07 · PCOS and changing cycles
PCOS, cycles and pregnancy risk
Mounjaro is not licensed specifically for PCOS, but many women with PCOS meet the licensed weight-management criteria, and weight loss itself is a first-line recommendation that can improve insulin resistance, cycles and symptoms.
Eligibility is assessed on the standard BMI criteria. Mention PCOS and any fertility plans in your consultation, because improving weight can restore ovulation.
Keep reliable contraception in place, follow the Mounjaro advice for your method, and raise any change in your cycle with your prescriber. If you are hoping to conceive, Mounjaro should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive.
08 · Vomiting, diarrhoea and the pill
Stomach side effects and your contraception
Digestive side effects are the most common effects of Mounjaro, so they are worth planning around. Like all medicines, Mounjaro can cause side effects, and most are digestive. The most common are nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort. Side effects are most likely when starting treatment or moving up a dose, and for most people they ease within days to a few weeks as the body adjusts.13
Those are also the moments the contraception advice covers.
Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin or eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing.13 You can report suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.19
Our page on Mounjaro, birth control, safety and side effects covers more of this ground.
09 · Weight loss and other options
Birth control, weight loss and alternatives
Whether birth control affects weight is a question for your prescriber or GP, who can look at your own method and history. Mounjaro is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, so contraception choices sit alongside those habits rather than replacing them. Our page on whether birth control suppresses appetite explores that side of the question.
If you are comparing weight-management options, orlistat is a tablet that blocks some dietary fat absorption and produces smaller average losses. Our guide to orlistat, Xenical and birth control explains how it fits with contraception. Other licensed options include Wegovy and Saxenda injections and, newly, GLP-1 tablets, which have their own dosing and checks.
Never combine GLP-1 medicines, unlicensed research peptides or compounded copies with Mounjaro. These combinations have no safety data and no regulated supply chain. If something promises faster results outside a licensed pathway, that is the warning sign.1
10 · Starting safely
How to start treatment with contraception in mind
Plan your contraception before your first dose, not after. Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, and individual results vary.
At the consultation, tell the prescriber which contraceptive you use, any plans for pregnancy, and every other medicine you take. Payment is taken when you place the order; if the prescriber decides the treatment is not suitable, the order is refunded automatically in full. Dispensing is by our registered pharmacy (GPhC 9012878), and delivery is free, next-day and tracked in temperature-controlled packaging. Monthly reviews and side-effect support are part of the aftercare.
Keep your pens in the fridge at 2–8°C and never freeze them. Once in use, a pen can be kept out of the fridge not above 30°C for up to 30 days, after which it should be discarded.1 If you are ready to look into treatment, the weight loss clinic is a place to begin. And if your contraception is the only question, our related page on whether Mounjaro interferes with birth control and the one on whether it can cancel out birth control add more detail.
This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.
