Does Creatine Suppress Appetite? What We Know (October 2026)

Creatine is not an appetite suppressant, and there is no established evidence that it directly switches off hunger. It is a sports supplement, not a licensed weight-management medicine. Some people feel less hungry, some feel hungrier, and many notice no change, usually because training and diet shift at the same time. Medicines that do reduce appetite work through gut-hormone pathways. Current as of October 2026.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Creatine is not licensed or sold as an appetite suppressant, and a direct hunger-reducing effect is not an established one.
  • Reported hunger changes are mixed, and training, sleep, stress and diet changes often explain them better than the supplement itself.
  • If you want a medicine that reduces appetite, licensed options work on gut-hormone pathways, not on muscle energy stores.
  • Supplements sold as natural GLP-1 boosters are not equivalents and do not substitute for prescribed treatment.
  • Persistent unusual hunger or loss of appetite deserves a conversation with a pharmacist or GP.
In this guide

01 · The core answer

Does creatine suppress your appetite?

No, creatine does not reliably suppress appetite. Anyone telling you it works like a diet pill is overstating the case.

That said, people do report appetite changes after starting it. The reports point in both directions. Some say they eat less, some say they feel hungrier, and many say nothing changes. Mixed reports are exactly what you would expect when the cause is not the supplement itself but everything that tends to start alongside it.

02 · Your next step

Is this relevant to you, and what should you do next?

It depends on why you are asking. There are really three situations, and each has a different next step.

Your situationWhat is likely going onSensible next step
You started creatine and feel hungrierTraining harder, sleeping differently or eating differently, rather than a proven effect of the supplementKeep a simple food and training diary for a few weeks and look for patterns
You started creatine and feel less hungryPossibly stress, routine, hydration or timing changes; not an established effect of creatineMake sure you are still eating enough protein and fluids; speak to a pharmacist if it persists
You want your appetite reduced to lose weightA supplement is the wrong tool; licensed treatment works through different pathwaysLook at regulated options with a prescriber

If your goal is genuine appetite control, the licensed route is a prescribed treatment reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. You can read how that works on our weight loss clinic page, or see the Mounjaro pen.

03 · Why reports are mixed

Why people report such different appetite effects

The honest reason is that creatine rarely arrives alone. People usually start it at the same moment they begin a new training block, tighten their diet or change their routine. Any of those can move hunger up or down, and the supplement takes the credit or the blame.

Harder training tends to raise the body's demand for food. If you lift more often or with more intensity, feeling hungrier is a normal response and has little to do with the tub on your shelf. Equally, people who begin a structured plan often become more aware of their eating, which can feel like reduced appetite when it is really increased attention.

Sleep, stress, caffeine, hydration and meal timing all play in as well. A person who begins creatine in the same week as a stressful project and an early-morning gym habit will notice appetite shifts that have many possible causes.

The accurate position is that a direct appetite-suppressing effect is not established.

04 · Hunger after starting creatine

Feeling hungrier after starting creatine

If you feel hungrier, the first thing to look at is your training, not the supplement. More effort in the gym asks more of your energy intake, and appetite often follows. That is a sign the body is responding to demand, not evidence of a hidden side effect.

Practical steps help whatever the cause. Build meals around protein and fibre, because they tend to keep you satisfied for longer. Keep fluids up through the day, as thirst can sometimes be mistaken for hunger. Plan snacks rather than grazing, and avoid leaving long gaps followed by large meals.

If you are trying to lose weight and the hunger is getting in the way, that is a useful signal. It may mean the plan is too aggressive, or that willpower alone is not enough for you. A pharmacist can talk through options, and a prescriber can assess whether regulated treatment is suitable.

Report any new or worrying symptom to your prescriber or pharmacist. If you think a medicine or supplement has caused a side effect, you can report it through the Yellow Card scheme.19

05 · Weight changes and creatine

Creatine, weight changes and belly fat

Creatine is not a fat-loss product, and it is not a treatment for belly fat. Whether the scale moves up, down or stays put after starting it depends on many things, and scale weight is a blunt measure. It reflects fluid, food in the gut, muscle and fat all at once.

So if you lost weight after starting creatine, do not assume the supplement caused fat loss. The more likely explanation is the surrounding changes: more exercise, better food choices, fewer takeaways, or simply paying attention to what you eat. If the scale went up instead, that too may reflect changes in the body that are not fat gain, and a tape measure or how clothes fit can tell you more.

Likewise, will you look leaner if you stop? Appearance depends on your overall body composition, which is driven mostly by diet, training and sleep. Judging it over a sustained period rather than a few days gives a fairer picture.

If you are weighing up supplements against prescribed treatment for weight management, our guide to creatine and Mounjaro compared sets out how different the two categories are.

06 · Safety and who should be careful

Downsides, doctors and who should be careful

A supplement is not the same as a medicine that has been through licensing, and quality can vary between products. Anyone with an existing medical condition, particularly a kidney condition, anyone taking regular prescribed medicines, and anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding should speak to a pharmacist or GP before starting a supplement. Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. If you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly.

Doctors tend to be cautious about supplements generally because evidence, labelling and quality control are less rigorous than for medicines. That is not the same as saying a particular supplement is dangerous. It means decisions should be informed, not driven by marketing.

For general guidance on what is considered good for you, the NHS website is a trustworthy place to check, and your pharmacist can review your supplements against your medicines.

07 · What really reduces appetite

What actually reduces appetite

Medicines that reduce appetite work on the hormonal signals between gut and brain. Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly, licensed in the UK for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1

Tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin. In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.1

That is a completely different mechanism from a supplement that provides raw material for muscle energy. It is also why prescribing involves a consultation and a review by a GPhC-registered prescriber, who checks that the medicine is suitable for you. Treatment is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, and individual results vary.13

If you are curious about the timeline on treatment, see our guide on how Mounjaro suppresses appetite. For a non-injectable licensed alternative, our page on orlistat and appetite explains how it differs.

08 · Supplements and prescribed treatment

Using supplements alongside prescribed treatment

No supplement is required with Mounjaro, but eating much less can leave gaps, so a standard daily multivitamin is a reasonable safety net while losing weight. Discuss anything beyond that with a pharmacist.13

Supplements sold as natural GLP-1 boosters are not equivalents and are not substitutes for prescribed treatment. Oral supplements, like other oral products, may be absorbed more slowly when you start treatment.13 If you already take creatine and are considering treatment, tell the prescriber during your consultation so the full picture is on record. Our page on creatine and GLP-1 treatment goes into this combination further.

Muscle matters more, not less, when appetite falls. Some of any rapid weight loss comes from lean tissue, and protecting muscle protects your metabolism, strength and appearance. The two levers are adequate protein, with a protein source at every meal, and resistance exercise two or more times a week.13 This matters more, not less, as the dose rises and appetite falls.

Hydration also matters. Reduced appetite means less fluid from food, and vomiting or diarrhoea can dehydrate you quickly, so keep water within reach through the day.13

09 · Other substances and appetite

How creatine compares with other things said to affect appetite

Many substances change hunger, but for very different reasons and with very different risks. Creatine sits in a different category from these, because it is a nutritional supplement and not a drug of that kind.

If you are curious about specific cases, we have separate guides, including whether Winstrol suppresses appetite and whether meth suppresses appetite. The aim is not to encourage any of them. Those pages explain the picture so people understand why appetite-suppression claims are rarely a good reason to take anything.

The common thread is simple. Anything that dramatically reduces hunger is acting on the body in a significant way, which is why proper medicines are prescribed and monitored. A supplement that is freely sold without assessment is unlikely to do the same job safely.

10 · Choosing a regulated route

If you want appetite support, choose a regulated route

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions. Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.4

You complete a free online consultation, a GPhC-registered prescriber reviews it, and if approved your order is dispensed by our registered pharmacy (GPhC 9012878). Unsuitable orders are refunded automatically, and delivery is free next-day tracked delivery in temperature-controlled packaging.

Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Does creatine suppress appetite?
Not reliably. Creatine is a sports supplement, not a licensed appetite-control product, and a direct hunger-suppressing effect is not an established one. Some people feel less hungry, others more hungry, and many notice nothing. Changes in training, sleep, stress and diet usually explain appetite shifts better than the supplement does.
Why did creatine make me lose weight?
The supplement may not be the cause. Scale weight reflects fluid, food, muscle and fat together, and people often start creatine while also training harder or eating more carefully. Those changes can move your weight on their own. Measuring over a sustained period, and checking waist or clothing fit, gives a clearer picture.
Is creatine bad for losing belly fat?
Creatine is not a fat-loss treatment, so it will not target belly fat either way. Fat loss depends mainly on a sustainable calorie deficit, regular activity including resistance work, and sleep. If weight management is the goal, speak to a pharmacist or prescriber about regulated options instead of relying on a supplement.
Will I look leaner if I stop creatine?
Appearance depends on overall body composition, which is driven mostly by diet, training and sleep, and short-term changes on the scale are a blunt guide. If you are unsure whether a supplement suits you, a pharmacist can review it alongside your medicines and goals.
Who should never take creatine?
As a general rule, anyone with a medical condition, particularly kidney problems, anyone on regular prescribed medicines, and anyone pregnant or breastfeeding should check with a pharmacist or GP before starting any supplement.
Can I take creatine while on Mounjaro?
No supplement is required with Mounjaro, and anything beyond a standard daily multivitamin should be discussed with a pharmacist. Oral supplements may be absorbed more slowly when you start treatment. Tell your prescriber what you take. Our guide to creatine and GLP-1 treatment covers this in more detail.
What medicines actually suppress appetite?
Licensed weight-management medicines work on gut-hormone pathways. Tirzepatide, the active ingredient in Mounjaro, activates GIP and GLP-1 receptors, helping regulate appetite and slow stomach emptying, so most people feel fuller sooner. It is prescription-only, supplied after a consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, and used alongside diet and activity.
