A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Diabetes is not required: Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults as well as for type 2 diabetes.
  • Eligibility is based on BMI, plus a weight-related condition if your BMI is between 27 and 30.
  • Prediabetes and type 2 diabetes both count as qualifying weight-related conditions.
  • NHS access is being phased in over several years, so many people choose regulated private treatment.
  • Every order is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, and the consultation is free.
In this guide

01 · Eligibility

Who can get Mounjaro without diabetes?

Adults who meet the weight-management criteria can be prescribed Mounjaro without diabetes. The licence covers a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition. Examples include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. It must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.1

A prescriber assesses your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding if it is suitable.11 If you are unsure where you stand, see our guides on getting Mounjaro if you're pre-diabetic and the weight needed to qualify.

02 · NHS or private

NHS or private if you're not diabetic?

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition. The primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.46 Full rollout is expected to take years, so many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment.

Privately, the Mounjaro pen starts at £169.99 for the 2.5mg starter, and your first order is £40 less with code FIRST40. Every later order is £25 off the standard price. All six doses are in stock.

03 · How it works

04 · Diabetes versus weight use

Two licensed uses, one medicine

Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injection made by Eli Lilly. It comes in a pre-filled KwikPen in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.1 In type 2 diabetes it improves blood sugar control (HbA1c) and supports weight loss. If you have diabetes, tell your prescriber and your usual diabetes team so care stays joined up.8

05 · How it works

Why it suits people without diabetes

Tirzepatide activates two gut-hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1. Together they help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties and improve the body's response to insulin. Most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.1

06 · What trials show

What the weight-loss trial found

In SURMOUNT-1, 2,539 adults taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, versus 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone. For someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg. These are trial averages and individual results vary.2

07 · Why you may be refused

Why you might be refused

The usual reason is not meeting the licensed criteria: a BMI below 27, or between 27 and 30 with no weight-related condition. A prescriber also reviews your medical history and current medicines.1 If you are declined, you are refunded automatically. See also whether you have to be obese.

Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. This page is information, not a substitute for medical advice.

08 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Can I take Mounjaro without being diabetic?
Yes. Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 to 30 with a weight-related condition. A GPhC-registered prescriber reviews your BMI, medical history and current medicines first, and it is used alongside diet and activity changes.
How can I get Mounjaro without diabetes?
Complete a free online consultation. A GPhC-registered prescriber reviews your answers, and if Mounjaro is suitable it is dispensed and delivered. Alternatively, ask your GP about NHS access, which is being phased in over several years.
Can you get Mounjaro on the NHS if not diabetic?
Yes, but access is phased. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus a weight-related condition. The primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions.
Why would you be refused Mounjaro?
Most commonly because you fall outside the licensed criteria, such as a BMI under 27, or 27 to 30 without a weight-related condition. A prescriber also checks your medical history and current medicines. Unsuitable orders with us are refunded automatically.
Who should not take Mounjaro?
You should not take Mounjaro if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, and it should not be used during pregnancy or while trying to conceive. Your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems. Always share your full medical history and medicine list during consultation. Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. Tell the prescriber about every condition and medicine, including contraception. Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which can reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed, so switch to a non-oral method, or add a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.
What are the common side effects of Mounjaro?
The most common side effects, affecting more than 1 in 10 people, are nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort, and most ease within days to a few weeks as the body adjusts.13 Discuss any new symptom with your prescriber, and report suspected side effects through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19
Does prediabetes qualify me for Mounjaro?
Prediabetes is listed as a weight-related condition. With a BMI between 27 and 30, having prediabetes can make you eligible, and with a BMI of 30 or above you qualify on BMI alone. A prescriber makes the final decision.
