Do GLP-1 Medicines Affect Medication Absorption? (October 2026)

Yes, GLP-1 medicines can change how quickly some oral medicines are absorbed, because they slow stomach emptying. This matters most when you start treatment or increase the dose. Tell your prescriber about everything you take, especially warfarin, insulin and sulfonylureas. No adjustment is needed for paracetamol.1 Current as of October 2026.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Slower stomach emptying can change how quickly some oral medicines are absorbed, mainly when you start or raise the dose.
  • Warfarin, other narrow-margin medicines, insulin and sulfonylureas are the ones to flag to your prescriber first.
  • Oral contraceptives can be less well absorbed, so switch to a non-oral method, or add a barrier method such as condoms, for 4 weeks after starting and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.
  • Iron is not listed in the Mounjaro patient leaflet as an effect of the medicine, so tell your prescriber about any iron or supplements you take.
  • Paracetamol needs no adjustment.

01 · The core answer

Do GLP-1 medicines affect how other medicines are absorbed?

They can, mainly through timing. Tirzepatide, the active ingredient in Mounjaro, activates GIP and GLP-1 receptors, and one result is that the stomach empties more slowly.1 Because Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, it can affect how quickly some oral medicines are absorbed, particularly when you start treatment or increase the dose.1

The product information says this is most relevant when you start treatment or increase the dose.1 For a deeper look, see our guide on whether Mounjaro affects absorption of medication.

02 · Your next step

What should you do if you take other medicines?

Tell the prescriber about everything you take before your first dose, including prescription medicines, over-the-counter products and supplements. Our online consultation is free and every order is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, so this is the right moment to raise it.

Do not change or stop any existing medicine yourself. If you are already on treatment, mention each dose increase to your prescriber, because the timing effect is most relevant at those points.1

03 · Why absorption timing changes

Why does slower stomach emptying change absorption?

Mounjaro helps regulate appetite, slows how quickly the stomach empties and improves the way the body responds to insulin.1 The slowed emptying is why most people feel fuller sooner and stay less hungry between meals.

The same mechanism is behind the interaction advice. A tablet taken by mouth normally leaves the stomach and moves on to be absorbed. If the stomach holds it for longer, some oral medicines may be absorbed more slowly.1

This is a timing question first.

Each GLP-1 medicine has its own product information, so check the one you are prescribed rather than assuming they all behave identically.

04 · Iron and nutrient absorption

Do GLP-1 medicines affect iron absorption?

Iron is not listed in the Mounjaro patient leaflet as a side effect, but oral supplements, like other oral products, may be absorbed more slowly when you start treatment.13

Treatment is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.1 Eating less overall is a separate issue from absorption, and it is the reason to keep your diet varied and to talk to your prescriber at your monthly review if you are worried about what you are eating.

If you take iron on prescription, for example after a diagnosis of low iron, do not stop it. Tell your prescriber you take it and ask whether anything about timing needs thought. If you notice a new symptom after starting treatment, discuss it with your prescriber and report it through the Yellow Card scheme.19

05 · The contraceptive pill

What about oral contraceptives?

Mounjaro can reduce the absorption of oral contraceptives, because stomach emptying slows.7 The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.1

The MHRA has published guidance on contraception with GLP-1 and GIP medicines.7 If you use the pill, raise it in your consultation so the prescriber can discuss what suits you. Do not rely on guesswork about whether your pill is still working as intended.

06 · Diabetes and narrow-margin medicines

Which medicines need the most care?

The product information singles out warfarin and other narrow-margin medicines, insulin and sulfonylureas.1 A narrow margin means the gap between too little and too much of the medicine is small, so a change in timing deserves attention.

For insulin and sulfonylureas, doses may need reducing to avoid low blood sugar.1 That is not the same as saying they cannot be used together. It means your prescriber should know, and may adjust doses, particularly when you start treatment or step up.1

No adjustment is needed for paracetamol.1

If you have type 2 diabetes, bring your current medicine list and any home monitoring readings to your consultation. That gives the prescriber what they need to plan with you.

07 · Dose changes and clearance

When is absorption most likely to matter?

It matters most when you start treatment and whenever you increase the dose.1 Mounjaro starts at 2.5mg and steps up through 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg and 12.5mg to 15mg, so there may be several points to flag with your prescriber.1

It also helps to know that tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days. After a final dose it takes roughly four to five weeks to clear the system, and there is no way to speed this up.1

Our aftercare includes ongoing monthly reviews, dose-titration and follow-up assessments by the prescribing team, plus side-effect support. Repeat orders re-check suitability, with no auto-shipping, so there is a regular chance to update your medicine list.

08 · Telling your prescriber

What should you tell your prescriber?

List every medicine you take, because the useful details are rarely obvious from the name alone. Include prescription medicines, over-the-counter products, vitamins and minerals, and anything you take only occasionally. The patient information leaflet gives the full guidance for the pen.13

  • Anything for blood thinning, such as warfarin
  • Insulin or sulfonylureas for diabetes
  • The oral contraceptive pill
  • Iron or other supplements, even if you think they are minor
  • Any new symptom you notice after starting or increasing a dose

Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, and individual results vary.1

09 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

10 · Access and NHS context

How do you access treatment and get this advice?

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first.46 Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment.

Whichever route you take, the medicines conversation is the same. Our free consultation is a short health questionnaire with no obligation, and a GPhC-registered prescriber reviews it. Supply is official LillyDirect supply, with genuine KwikPens.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Does GLP-1 slow down digestion?
Yes. Mounjaro helps regulate appetite and slows how quickly the stomach empties, which is why many people feel fuller sooner. That same slowed emptying is why some oral medicines may be absorbed more slowly, particularly when you start treatment or increase the dose. Tell your prescriber about everything you take.
Do GLP-1 medicines affect medication absorption?
They can affect how quickly some oral medicines are absorbed, because stomach emptying slows. This is most relevant when you start or raise the dose. Warfarin, other narrow-margin medicines, insulin and sulfonylureas need particular attention, while no adjustment is needed for paracetamol. Always share your full medicine list with your prescriber.
Do GLP-1 medicines affect iron absorption?
Iron is not listed in the Mounjaro patient leaflet as a side effect, but oral supplements may be absorbed more slowly when you start treatment. If you take iron, keep taking it, tell your prescriber, and ask whether timing needs any thought. Report any new symptom to your prescriber and through the Yellow Card scheme.
Can GLP-1 medicines affect the contraceptive pill?
Yes. Mounjaro can reduce the absorption of oral contraceptives because stomach emptying slows. Switch to a non-oral method, or add a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase. Mention the pill in your consultation. The MHRA has published guidance on contraception with GLP-1 and GIP medicines, and it is worth reading alongside that advice.
Can I take insulin or sulfonylureas with Mounjaro?
They are not forbidden together, but doses of insulin and sulfonylureas may need reducing to avoid low blood sugar. Your prescriber should know about them before you start, and again when your dose goes up. Never change a diabetes medicine yourself without clinical advice.
Does magnesium interfere with drug absorption?
Oral supplements, like other oral products, may be absorbed more slowly when you start Mounjaro. Tell your prescriber or pharmacist about any magnesium product you take, including antacids and supplements, and ask whether its timing relative to your other medicines matters.
What are the common side effects of GLP-1 medicines?
The most common side effects, affecting more than 1 in 10 people, are nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort. They are most likely when starting or increasing a dose and usually ease within days to a few weeks. Seek immediate medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain, pain in the upper right abdomen with fever or yellowing of skin or eyes, or signs of a severe allergic reaction. Your prescribing team offers side-effect support, and you can report any suspected side effect through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme. Discuss any new or persistent symptom with your prescriber.
