Do Appetite Suppressants Work? What the Evidence Says (October 2026)

Do appetite suppressants work? Over-the-counter and "natural" products have little reliable evidence behind them, while prescription gut-hormone treatments such as Mounjaro (tirzepatide) have large trials showing meaningful weight loss alongside diet and activity. Results vary, and no supplement is a substitute for a licensed medicine.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Most shop-bought appetite suppressants and supplements lack the trial evidence that licensed prescription treatments have.
  • Mounjaro works on two gut-hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1, to help you feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals.
  • In SURMOUNT-1, average loss on tirzepatide at 72 weeks far exceeded lifestyle changes alone; individual results vary.
  • Dramatic weight-loss claims and "natural Ozempic" marketing should be treated with caution.
  • Prescription treatment is only supplied after a consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.

01 · The core answer

Do appetite suppressants work for weight loss?

It depends entirely on which product you mean. Most over-the-counter products and supplements have weak or inconsistent evidence, and any effect on hunger tends to be small and short-lived. Prescription medicines that act on gut-hormone pathways are a different category, with large published trials behind them.

The most useful way to judge any product is to ask three questions. Is it a licensed medicine? Is there a named, published trial? Does it come with clinical oversight? Most supplements fail all three.

02 · What to do next

Is this relevant to you, and what next?

If you are looking for something that makes a real difference to hunger, the choice is between lifestyle approaches and a licensed prescription treatment. Prescription treatment is for adults who meet the licensed criteria, and it is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

If you think that might apply, our weight loss clinic explains the options. A free online consultation is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, who decides whether treatment is suitable for you. There is no obligation.

03 · How they work

How do appetite suppressants work?

Appetite suppressants aim to reduce hunger, increase fullness or both. Some products act on brain signalling, some add bulk in the stomach, and many simply claim to do so with no robust proof. That is why the label "appetite suppressant" tells you very little by itself.

Licensed prescription medicines are different because their mechanism is documented in the product information. Our guide to how an appetite suppressant works covers the general idea, and pharmaceutical appetite suppressants explains the prescription category.

Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly. In the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1

04 · What prescription treatment does

What a prescription treatment actually does

Tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1

In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.1 This dual action distinguishes Mounjaro from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide (Wegovy/Ozempic).1

It is a gradual effect, not a switch. Weight loss on Mounjaro is gradual by design, with the first weeks an adjustment phase where losses are usually modest.1

05 · What the trials show

What the trial evidence shows

Named, published trials give better evidence than marketing. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2

These are trial averages — individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2

Compare that with a typical supplement: there is usually no comparable named trial, no standard dose and no prescriber reviewing your progress. Trial averages do not predict your own result, but the gap in the quality of evidence is real.

06 · Realistic expectations

How fast do results come?

Think in months, not days. Everyone starts Mounjaro on 2.5mg once a week, and this starting dose is about letting your body adjust, not about weight loss itself.1 Most measurable progress builds from 5mg onward, month by month, and the trials measured results at 72 weeks.2

Experiences differ widely. Some people notice an appetite change in the first week, while others feel little until a higher dose, and both are normal.1 Early loss includes water weight, so the trend over weeks matters more than any single weigh-in.

Plateaus of a few weeks are also normal. The licensed responses are to review food intake honestly, protect protein and activity, check sleep and alcohol, and discuss a dose step-up with your prescriber if you are not yet at maximum. A plateau is not a reason to double doses or add unlicensed products.1

07 · Natural alternatives

Can you mimic Ozempic naturally?

No supplement reproduces what a prescription GLP-1 or GIP/GLP-1 medicine does. Products sold as "nature's Ozempic" borrow the name of a licensed medicine to suggest an equivalence that does not exist. Their marketing often leans on dramatic weight-loss claims, which you should treat with suspicion.

What can genuinely help you feel fuller without a prescription is ordinary and unglamorous. Protein at each meal, high-fibre foods, plenty of water, vegetables that add volume, regular meal timing and enough sleep all make hunger easier to manage. They support a diet. They do not suppress appetite the way a medicine does.

If you are weighing risks, read our guides on whether appetite suppressants are bad and whether they are dangerous, and our overview of appetite suppressants that actually work.

08 · Safety and red flags

Safety and red flags when buying

Be wary of any seller offering to supply a prescription weight-loss medicine without a consultation or prescription. Counterfeit and unregulated products are a recognised risk, and the MHRA publishes counterfeit medicine alerts.7 Check that a pharmacy appears on the GPhC register; ours is GPhC 9012878.

Other warning signs include products that promise specific results, claim to be "clinically proven" without naming a study, or have no ingredient dosing information. If you experience any unexpected symptom after taking any medicine or supplement, speak to a healthcare professional and report it through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.19

09 · NHS and private options

NHS and private access

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).46

Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting. A private route still means a prescriber decides whether treatment is right for you, and unsuitable orders are refunded automatically. Our pen is supplied through official LillyDirect supply, and delivery is free, next-day and tracked.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Is there any appetite suppressant that actually works?
Licensed prescription medicines that act on gut-hormone pathways, such as Mounjaro (tirzepatide), have large published trials showing meaningful weight loss alongside a reduced-calorie diet and activity. Over-the-counter products and supplements do not have comparable evidence. Individual results vary, and a GPhC-registered prescriber must assess whether a prescription treatment is suitable for you.
How do appetite suppressants work?
It depends on the product. Some claim to affect brain signalling, some add bulk in the stomach, and many have no proven mechanism. Mounjaro activates the GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which help regulate appetite and slow how quickly the stomach empties, so most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals.
Are appetite suppressants good for losing weight?
Licensed prescription options can be, when used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them. Shop-bought products and supplements have weak evidence and no clinical oversight, so they are a poor basis for a weight-loss plan. Speak to a prescriber or pharmacist about suitable options for you.
How can I mimic Ozempic naturally?
You cannot reproduce a prescription medicine with a supplement, whatever "natural Ozempic" marketing suggests. You can make hunger easier to manage with protein and fibre at meals, regular eating patterns, water and good sleep. These support a diet but do not work the way licensed GLP-1 treatments do.
Is there a tablet equivalent to Mounjaro?
Mounjaro is a once-weekly injection. Oral GLP-1 options, such as Wegovy tablets and Foundayo, exist as separate licensed medicines with their own product information and are not interchangeable with it. A prescriber can discuss which option suits you.
What is the safest over-the-counter weight loss pill?
No over-the-counter pill is risk-free, and none is a proven substitute for a licensed treatment. Dosing of supplements is not standardised and there is no clinical oversight. Ask a pharmacist before taking anything, particularly if you take other medicines, and report any unexpected effects through the Yellow Card scheme.
What foods act as appetite suppressants?
No food suppresses appetite like a medicine, but some help you feel full. Protein-rich foods, high-fibre foods, vegetables and broth-based soups add volume and satisfaction to meals. They support a reduced-calorie diet rather than replace one, and the effect varies between people.
What is the pill that makes you not want to eat?
There is no single pill that reliably does this for everyone. Prescription options are assessed by a prescriber, who decides what suits you. Be sceptical of any product promising specific results, and never buy prescription medicines from sellers who skip the consultation.
