A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Mounjaro is the brand name; tirzepatide is the active ingredient, made by Eli Lilly.
  • It is a once-weekly injection in a pre-filled pen, used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity.
  • It activates both GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which sets it apart from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide.
  • It is prescription-only, so it needs a consultation reviewed by a prescriber before it can be supplied.
  • NHS access exists but is being phased in over several years; regulated private treatment is the other route.

01 · The definition

What is Mounjaro, in one clear definition?

Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine made by Eli Lilly.1 In the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes.1 It comes as a pre-filled multi-dose pen (KwikPen) in six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.1

The two names do different jobs. "Mounjaro" is the product name on the box. "Tirzepatide" is the active ingredient, the name used in clinical guidance, trial papers and prescribing references.

02 · Is it for you?

Is a definition enough, or is Mounjaro relevant to you?

It depends on why you are asking. If you are considering treatment, the next question is whether you meet the licensed criteria and whether a prescriber judges it suitable for you.

Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber. It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary.1 Our consultation is free and carries no obligation, and the prescriber can decline an order that is not suitable.

If you are ready to look at the practical side, the Mounjaro pen page shows current doses and prices. The starting pen has a standard price of £169.99 per month, and all six doses are in stock. For broader context, our weight loss clinic page covers the wider picture of supported treatment.

03 · How it works

How does Mounjaro work?

Tirzepatide is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once: GIP and GLP-1.1 Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties, and improve the way the body responds to insulin.1

In practice, most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.1 The medicine does not replace eating well or moving more. It makes a reduced-calorie diet easier to follow for many people.

This dual action is what distinguishes Mounjaro from single-action GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide (Wegovy/Ozempic).1 Semaglutide acts on one of those pathways, while tirzepatide acts on both. That is a difference in mechanism. It is not, on its own, a claim about which medicine suits any one person better.

We cover that question separately in our explainer on Mounjaro and lipolysis.

04 · What the trials show

What does the evidence say about Mounjaro?

The headline trial for weight management is SURMOUNT-1. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2

These are trial averages — individual results vary, and treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2

For someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg.

The same trial reported how many people reached key milestones. At 72 weeks, 85% of participants on 5mg, 89% on 10mg and 91% on 15mg had lost at least 5% of their body weight.2 Half of participants on 10mg and 57% on 15mg lost at least 20% of their body weight.2

05 · Who prescribes it

Is Mounjaro available on the NHS?

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years.4 NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first (initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions).46

Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.6

Whichever route you use, the same principle applies. A prescriber decides whether the medicine is suitable, and you are monitored while you take it. Our own aftercare includes ongoing monthly reviews, dose-titration and follow-up assessments by the prescribing team, plus side-effect support.

06 · Practical basics

What does a Mounjaro pen look like and how is it used?

Mounjaro is supplied as a pre-filled multi-dose pen (KwikPen), injected once a week. Each pen is a single strength, and treatment is stepped up in strengths over time as your prescriber advises.

Mounjaro is injected under the skin once a week, on the same day each week. Follow the instructions that come with the pen and the patient information leaflet. Follow the pen's instructions for each dose rather than relying on general advice. Needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance are included with every order from us.

Storage matters too. Pens are kept in the fridge at 2–8°C until first use. Once in use, a KwikPen can be kept out of the fridge at a temperature not above 30°C for up to 30 days after first use, and must then be thrown away. Do not use a pen that has been above 30°C or has been frozen. Our guide to storing Mounjaro has the full detail, and the leaflet is the final word.

If you have seen the word "cartridge" used about the product, our page on the Mounjaro cartridge clears up what the UK product actually is. If you are wondering about how it applies to women specifically, see Mounjaro for her.

07 · Safety basics

Who should not take Mounjaro?

Mounjaro is not suitable for everyone. You should not take it if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, and it should not be used during pregnancy or while trying to conceive. Your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems. Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. If you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly. Always share your full medical history and medicine list during consultation.

One interaction is worth knowing early. The medicine can reduce absorption of oral contraceptives because stomach emptying slows.7 The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.1 Talk to your prescriber about what that means for you.

If you use insulin or a sulfonylurea, doses may need adjusting because of the risk of low blood sugar. That is a conversation for your prescriber, not a reason to change anything yourself.

If you notice a new symptom while taking it, tell your prescriber. Seek immediate medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin or eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. You can report suspected side effects through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.

08 · Stopping and clearance

How long does tirzepatide stay in your system?

Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear the system — there is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1

That long clearance is one reason a once-weekly schedule works. It also means any effect of a dose, including side effects, does not disappear immediately if you stop. If you are thinking of stopping, speak to your prescriber first.

09 · Look-alike claims

Are there natural or cheaper substitutes for Mounjaro?

No supplement is a substitute for Mounjaro. Products sold as "nature's Ozempic" or the "poor man's Ozempic" are low-cost supplements with no clinical oversight, and they are not medicines. Dosing is not standardised, and dramatic weight-loss claims on their labels should be treated with caution.

Counterfeit and unregulated injectable products are a separate risk. Be wary of any seller offering to supply Mounjaro without a consultation or prescription. You can check a pharmacy is genuine on the GPhC register; ours is GPhC 9012878.7

If cost is the issue, our own supply is official LillyDirect, with genuine KwikPens. A new-customer discount applies to first orders and a reorder discount to every future order. The current values and codes are shown on the product page.

10 · Formulary status

Where does Mounjaro sit in UK guidance?

UK guidance covers tirzepatide for both of its licensed uses. NICE has separate recommendations for weight management and for type 2 diabetes.48 Local NHS areas decide how and when to make it available, which is why you may hear it described as being on or off a local list.

Our page on the Mounjaro formulary explains what that term means in practice and how it affects access.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
What does Mounjaro mean?
Mounjaro is the brand name of a prescription medicine whose active ingredient is tirzepatide, a once-weekly injection made by Eli Lilly. In the UK it is licensed for weight management in adults and for type 2 diabetes. The brand name appears on the box; clinicians often use the generic name, tirzepatide.
How would you define tirzepatide?
Tirzepatide is the active ingredient in Mounjaro. It is the first treatment of its kind to activate two natural gut-hormone receptors at once, GIP and GLP-1. Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties and improve the way the body responds to insulin. It is a prescription-only medicine.
What kind of drug is Ozempic, and how does it differ from Mounjaro?
Ozempic is semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes; it is not a UK weight-loss medicine, and prescribing it privately for weight loss is off-label. Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, which activates both GIP and GLP-1 receptors. That dual action is the mechanism difference. Both are prescription medicines, and a prescriber decides which, if either, suits you.
What is known as the "poor man's Ozempic"?
The phrase is used for low-cost supplements marketed as natural alternatives to GLP-1 medicines. They are not licensed medicines, they have no clinical oversight, and dosing is not standardised. They are not an established substitute for Mounjaro or semaglutide. Dramatic weight-loss claims on their labels should be treated with caution.
How do you inject tirzepatide?
Mounjaro comes as a pre-filled KwikPen used once a week. Follow the pen's instructions and the patient information leaflet for each dose, as technique details are set out there. We include needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance with every order, and our prescribing team can answer questions.
Is Mounjaro available on the NHS?
Yes, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the NHS primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first. Many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment instead of waiting.
How long does Mounjaro stay in your system?
Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so after a final dose it takes four to five weeks to clear the system. There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears. Speak to your prescriber before stopping treatment.
