A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Weight loss injections are prescription-only: a chemist, high-street or online, must have a prescriber assess you first.
  • Mounjaro, Wegovy and daily liraglutide are the licensed injection types you will see mentioned at UK chemists.
  • Pharmacy prices differ: across the UK pharmacies we track, the same-dose gap runs from £27 to £41.
  • Check any seller on the GPhC register; fake pens have reached the UK and some contained insulin.
  • You can complete a free online consultation with us, with free next-day tracked delivery.
In this guide

01 · The short answer

Can you get weight loss injections from a chemist?

Yes, but only through a prescription route. A chemist, whether a high-street branch or an online pharmacy, can supply a weight loss injection once a prescriber has reviewed your health, BMI and current medicines.

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a once-weekly prescription medicine from Eli Lilly, licensed in the UK for weight management in adults.1 It is supplied as a multi-dose KwikPen in six strengths from 2.5mg to 15mg. Our guide to weight loss injections explained covers the whole category, and our page on GLP-1 injections at a chemist looks at the wider drug class.

So the practical question is not whether a chemist can supply one, but which chemist, at what price, and how quickly you can get through assessment. Branch availability varies, and not every high-street pharmacy offers weight management injections, so ring ahead before you travel.

02 · Your options

High-street chemist, online pharmacy or something else?

The safest routes all end in the same place: a registered pharmacy dispensing against a prescription. The table sets out the realistic options.

RoutePrescription needed?What to know
High-street chemist with a weight management serviceYes, after an in-branch or linked online consultationBoots' Mounjaro dose prices range from £179.00 to £339.00 per month, as we track them. Appointment times and local stock vary.
Registered online pharmacy (such as ours)Yes, after an online consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriberStandard Mounjaro pens run from £169.99 at 2.5mg to £329.99 at 15mg per month; delivery is free and next-day.
NHS weight managementYes, via your GP or a specialist serviceAccess is being phased in over several years; eligibility is narrower than for private treatment.
Supplements sold as "natural" alternativesNoLow-cost supplement, no clinical oversight. They are not injections and are not equivalent to licensed medicines.
Social media, salons, unverified websitesOften none offeredUnsafe. Fake pens have caused hospitalisations. Avoid completely.

If you want to compare the high-street route with an online one in detail, our page on Mounjaro from a chemist goes through it, and there is a separate explainer on how to buy Mounjaro from a registered pharmacy.

03 · Cost

What do chemist weight loss injections cost?

Prices differ noticeably between pharmacies, even for the same pen. Across the UK pharmacies we track (checked 10 October 2026), the cheapest and dearest Mounjaro pen at any dose run from £143.96 to £339.00 per month. For the 2.5mg starting pen alone, providers run from £143.96 to £179.99. For the same dose, the gap between providers ranges from £27 to £41.

With us, the Mounjaro pen costs £169.99 per month at 2.5mg and £218.99 at 5mg. A new customer's first 2.5mg pen costs £129.99 with code FIRST40, and the new-customer discount applies to a first order at any dose, so switching at 15mg means a first order of £289.99. After that, every later order is £25 off the standard price (code DOSE25).

Planning beyond the first month matters because the dose steps up. If you step up after 4 weeks on each dose, your first four pens (2.5mg to 10mg) cost £959.96 at standard prices. A first year costs £2,711.88 if you settle at 5mg, up to £3,599.88 at 15mg. These totals are before discounts: a new customer's first order is £40 less, and every later order is £25 less. If you settle at 7.5mg, 10mg or 12.5mg, your monthly price is £279.99, £290.99 or £319.99 respectively.

The consultation is free, and the price shown is the price paid, with no hidden fees. You can pay by Visa, Mastercard or Klarna, and pay-monthly options exist with no subscription lock-in.

04 · Which injections exist

Which weight loss injections can a chemist supply?

Three licensed injection types come up most often, and each needs a prescription. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is injected once a week.1 Wegovy (semaglutide) is also once weekly, with pens of 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg; the dose steps up after at least four weeks and reaches the 2.4mg maintenance dose from week 17.18 Liraglutide, sold as Saxenda and in products such as Erly, is a daily injection, supplied at 6mg per millilitre, unlike the weekly options.

Which one suits you is a prescriber's decision, not a counter sale. For a broader view of the choices, see our all weight loss treatments page, or read which injection might be the healthiest option for your situation.

Mounjaro differs from semaglutide medicines such as Wegovy and Ozempic because it activates two gut-hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1, rather than one.1 Together these help regulate appetite, slow how quickly the stomach empties and improve the way the body responds to insulin. Most people feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals, which supports a reduced-calorie diet.

05 · Can you buy over the counter?

Can you buy weight loss injections over the counter?

No. Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, supplied only after a consultation reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber.1 Anyone offering a weight loss jab to buy without a consultation or prescription is not operating legitimately, whether in a shop, a salon, a message group or on a website.

The MHRA has seized thousands of fake weight-loss pens in the UK and has issued alerts after falsified Mounjaro pens were identified. Fake pens have caused hospitalisations, and some contained insulin rather than tirzepatide.7 That is the reason a prescription step exists, not an administrative hurdle.

Products described as "natural" or "nature's Ozempic", along with colostrum products, are a different matter. They are sold without a prescription precisely because they are not licensed weight loss medicines. Our page on colostrum weight loss claims explains why dramatic weight-loss claims on such products should be treated with caution. Dosing is not standardised for supplements, and they come with no clinical oversight.

06 · Who is eligible

Who can be prescribed weight loss injections?

Mounjaro is licensed for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition. Examples include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. It must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.111

A prescriber assesses your BMI, medical history and current medicines before deciding whether it is suitable. Who should not take Mounjaro: you should not take it if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, and it should not be used during pregnancy or while trying to conceive. Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. If you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly. Your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems. Always share your full medical history and medicine list during consultation.

What about the NHS?

Mounjaro is available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition. The primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first, initially BMI 40+ with four or more qualifying conditions. Full rollout is expected to take years, which is why many people who meet the licensed criteria choose regulated private treatment rather than waiting.46

Even with a private prescription, a high-street chemist will usually charge the private price rather than the £9.90 NHS prescription charge, which applies only to NHS prescriptions in England. Ask which applies before you book.

07 · What to expect

What results and side effects to expect

Weight loss on Mounjaro is gradual by design. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of 2,539 adults, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 These are trial averages and individual results vary. For someone starting at 100 kg, 20.9% is about 21 kg.

At 72 weeks, 85% of participants on 5mg, 89% on 10mg and 91% on 15mg had lost at least 5% of their body weight. Half of participants on 10mg and 57% on 15mg lost at least 20%.2 Treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.

How long does it take to work? The first weeks on 2.5mg are an adjustment phase and losses are usually modest. Most measurable progress builds from 5mg onward, month by month, so think in months, not days.1 If you have lost less than 5% of your starting weight after 6 months on the highest dose you can tolerate, your prescriber will discuss whether continuing or stopping is right for you.

In the first days after each injection, mild nausea, altered appetite and tiredness are the commonest early effects and usually settle. Early loss includes water weight, so the trend matters more than any single weigh-in.13 For a full side-effect list, read the patient information leaflet, tell your prescriber about any new or lasting symptom, and report suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.19

08 · Dosing and using the pen

How the dose ladder and injection work

Everyone starts on 2.5mg once a week. This starting dose is about letting your body adjust, not about weight loss itself. After at least 4 weeks the dose increases to 5mg, then can step up by 2.5mg at a minimum of 4-week intervals, up to a maximum of 15mg weekly, depending on how you respond and tolerate it. Many people settle at 5mg, 10mg or 15mg; higher is not automatically better.1

The injection goes under the skin once a week, on the same day each week, at any time of day, with or without food. Licensed sites are the stomach area (at least 5cm from the belly button), the front of the thigh, or the back of the upper arm if someone else gives it. Rotate the site with each dose. Each KwikPen contains four weekly doses.13

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can within 4 days (96 hours) of the scheduled time. If more than 4 days have passed, skip it and take the next one on your usual day, and never take two doses within 3 days of each other. You can change your injection day if at least 3 days (72 hours) have passed since your last dose.13

Keep pens in a fridge at 2–8°C and never freeze them. Once in use, a pen can stay out of the fridge at a temperature not above 30°C for up to 30 days, then it must be thrown away. Do not use a pen that has been above 30°C or frozen.1 Needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance come with every order from us.

09 · Spotting fakes and shortcuts

Spotting fake pens and unsafe shortcuts

Only buy from a pharmacy you can verify on the GPhC register, never from social media, beauty salons or unverified websites. Genuine treatment always involves a prescription and a clinical consultation.712 We are registered with the GPhC under number 9012878, and you can check us on the register.

Genuine UK stock is supplied through Lilly's official distribution to licensed pharmacies. Every pen carries a batch number and expiry date that can be checked.13 A genuine pen arrives cold-chain packaged and the solution inside is clear and colourless. Do not use a pen that has been frozen, looks cloudy or discoloured, has particles in it, or is past its expiry. If anything seems wrong, contact the pharmacy before injecting.

10 · Serious side effects

Serious side effects: when to get help straight away

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Can you get weight loss injections from the chemist?
Yes, but only on prescription. A registered chemist, on the high street or online, can supply a weight loss injection after a prescriber has assessed your BMI, medical history and current medicines. Pens are never sold over the counter. Not every branch offers the service, so check with the pharmacy first, or complete an online consultation instead.
Can you buy over the counter weight loss injections?
No. Mounjaro, Wegovy and liraglutide are prescription-only medicines. Anyone offering to supply a weight loss jab without a consultation or prescription is not legitimate. The MHRA has seized thousands of fake pens, and some contained insulin. Buy only from a pharmacy you can verify on the GPhC register.
How much does Mounjaro cost?
Our standard Mounjaro price is £169.99 per month at 2.5mg, rising to £329.99 at 15mg, and a new customer's first order is £40 less. Across the UK pharmacies we track, pens run from £143.96 to £339.00 per month depending on dose and provider. Prices checked 10 October 2026.
What is the cheapest way to get Mounjaro?
Compare the same dose across registered pharmacies, since the gap between providers runs from £27 to £41 in the pharmacies we track. Then apply any new-customer and reorder discounts.
Who should not take Mounjaro?
Mounjaro is not suitable for everyone. You should not take it if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, and it should not be used during pregnancy or while trying to conceive. Stop it at least one month before trying to conceive, and if you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly. Mounjaro is licensed for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 to 30 with a weight-related condition. Your prescriber will take extra care, or may recommend against treatment, if you have a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy, or gallbladder problems. Always share your full medical history and medicine list during consultation.
How long does it take for Mounjaro to work?
Progress is gradual. The first weeks on 2.5mg are an adjustment phase and losses are usually modest; most measurable progress builds from 5mg onward, month by month. Trials measured results at 72 weeks. If you have lost less than 5% of your starting weight after 6 months on the highest dose you can tolerate, your prescriber will review your treatment.
What are the common side effects of weight loss injections?
For Mounjaro, mild nausea, altered appetite and tiredness in the first days after each injection are the commonest early effects, and they usually settle. The most common side effects, affecting more than 1 in 10 people, are nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort; tell your prescriber about new or lasting symptoms, and report suspected side effects through the Yellow Card scheme.
What should I avoid while taking Mounjaro?
Never use a pen that has been frozen, looks cloudy, or is past its expiry. Tell your prescriber about every medicine you take, and use the injection alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more activity.
Does Day Lewis Pharmacy do Mounjaro?
What individual branches of other pharmacy chains stock varies by location. Ring your local branch and ask whether it offers a weight management service and Mounjaro. If not, a GPhC-registered online pharmacy can supply it after an online consultation.
