Weight loss injections in the UK are available through both private and NHS services, although NHS access is restricted and being introduced in phases. For people considering private treatment, cost is a legitimate part of the decision. These prescription-only medicines are available through private clinics and online consultation services, where a clinical team assesses your eligibility based on several factors including your body mass index (BMI), starting body weight, weight loss goals, and any existing weight related health conditions.

Most patients require a calorie controlled diet combined with regular exercise and lifestyle changes to achieve meaningful weight loss while using these treatments. Weight loss injections such as Mounjaro weight loss injections and semaglutide (Wegovy) work as receptor agonists that act on hormone pathways involved in appetite regulation, helping to reduce hunger and support weight management. The SURMOUNT-1 trial found that tirzepatide produced average weight losses of up to 22.5% of initial body weight at 72 weeks, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

The availability of weight loss injections depends on treatment preferences and clinical suitability, with regular monitoring by healthcare professionals essential to ensure safety and effectiveness. Common side effects include nausea and other gastrointestinal symptoms. Suspected adverse reactions can be reported through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme. NHS access to weight-management medicines is restricted and depends on the medicine, eligibility criteria and local service arrangements. Semaglutide and liraglutide are usually provided through specialist weight-management services for up to two years, while tirzepatide does not currently have a fixed maximum treatment period under NHS England's commissioning guidance.

Patients considering weight loss medications should discuss options such as weight loss tablets like orlistat, which works differently by reducing fat absorption, or injectable GLP-1 and GIP receptor agonists. Prior weight loss attempts and initial body weight are key considerations in determining the right treatment. The final dose and maintenance dose are adjusted individually, and some patients may require several months of treatment to lose weight and maintain results.

This guide covers what the main treatments cost, how to compare providers on a like-for-like basis, how to check bundle arithmetic yourself, and the costs that do not appear in any advertised price.

Current Prices

TreatmentStandard price
Mounjaro Injectable Pen£189.99
Wegovy Injectable Pen£134.99

These are standard prices rather than promotional ones, correct at the time of writing, and the live product pages take precedence. Any discount code running at the time is applied at checkout and is separate from the standard price.

One thing worth noting, because it is unusual and works in your favour: Mounjaro is currently priced the same at every strength. On most pricing structures the cost rises as you titrate upwards, so the pen you start on understates what you will pay later. Flat pricing removes that.

What "From" Prices Actually Mean

A "from" price usually represents the lowest-priced option, which may be the starting dose rather than the strength used for longer-term treatment.

If a provider prices by strength, the figure you see on a landing page is the one you will pay for roughly the first month, not the one you will pay in month six. When comparing, always compare the same strength.

How Weight Loss Bundles Work

A bundle is several pens bought together, sometimes covering consecutive strengths as you titrate upwards. A two-pen bundle might cover the first two strengths, a three-pen bundle the first three.

The appeal is obvious: fewer orders, and a price presented as a saving. Two things are worth understanding before buying one.

How to Check a Bundle Actually Saves You Money

This takes thirty seconds and is worth doing every time, because bundle prices are not always updated when single-pen prices change.

  • Note the bundle price.
  • Note the current standard price of each pen in it.
  • Add the single prices together.
  • Subtract the bundle price from that total.

If the result is positive, the bundle saves you that much. If it is negative, the bundle costs more than buying the pens separately.

That last outcome is not hypothetical. Bundles are usually priced once and then left alone, so when single-pen prices change, the saving can shrink, disappear or reverse without anyone noticing. A stated saving on a page is not the same as a saving you have calculated.

The Clinical Reason to Think Twice

The financial check is the easy part. The harder question is whether you will use all of it.

A bundle assumes a titration path your prescriber has not yet agreed. You may not tolerate the second strength, you may hold at one strength longer than the bundle assumes, or you may stop treatment altogether.

Once prescription medicines have been dispensed, they generally cannot simply be returned for resale, so a bundle can leave you with unused medicines if your treatment changes.

For a first order in particular, a single pen is the lower-risk purchase even where a bundle looks cheaper per pen.

Understanding Dosage and the Fourth and Final Dose

Weight loss injections typically require careful dosage adjustments to minimise side effects and optimise appetite regulation. Patients often start on a lower dose and gradually increase to a maintenance dose under medical supervision.

Weight-loss injections typically require gradual dose adjustments to improve tolerability and allow the prescriber to identify an appropriate maintenance dose. For medicines such as Mounjaro, each KwikPen contains four weekly doses, but the fourth dose is not necessarily the end of the titration schedule.

It is important to follow your prescriber's guidance closely regarding dosage changes and not to stop taking your medication without consultation, especially if you experience side effects or have existing conditions such as high blood pressure.

Considering Individual Results and Health Conditions

Individual results vary significantly depending on factors like adherence to a calorie-controlled diet, physical activity, and underlying health status. NICE guidance uses lower BMI thresholds, usually reduced by 2.5 kg/m², for people from certain ethnic backgrounds when assessing eligibility for some weight-management medicines.

Patients with conditions such as high blood pressure or other cardiovascular risk factors should undergo an appropriate assessment before starting treatment. Close monitoring by doctors ensures safety and helps tailor the treatment plan to your needs.

The Role of Appetite Regulation and Food Choices

Weight loss injections work by acting on hormones that regulate appetite, helping reduce hunger and calorie intake. However, these medicines are intended to be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Healthy food choices and regular physical activity can support weight management during treatment.

Doctors often recommend structured lifestyle changes alongside medication to support sustained weight loss and prevent weight regain after stopping injections.

Comparing Providers Fairly

Searches for the cheapest weight loss injection, the cheapest place to buy weight loss injections and the cheapest online pharmacy for weight loss injections all want the same thing: a like-for-like comparison. Advertised prices make that harder than it should be.

What to compareWhy it matters
The same strengthA 2.5mg price and a 10mg price are not comparable
Standard, not intro priceFirst-order discounts apply once, then the standard price applies
Whether needles are includedSome prices assume you buy these separately
Consultation or review feesCharged separately by some providers
Delivery, including express optionsCold-chain delivery is sometimes an added cost
Twelve-month totalGives a better picture of your potential overall cost

The twelve-month total is the one that changes decisions. A provider that is a few pounds cheaper on the first pen but charges for needles and express review may cost more across a year than one that looked more expensive up front.

A Note on Branded Programmes

Some weight loss services are marketed under their own brand name rather than the name of the medicine, which makes comparison harder because you cannot immediately see what you are buying.

Two questions cut through it. Which licensed medicine is actually being supplied? A programme's brand name is not the same as the medicine's name. What does the price include, the medicine itself, the assessment, any coaching or app, and delivery?

Once you have those two answers, any programme can be compared with any other on a like-for-like basis.

The Costs That Do Not Appear in the Price

Several real costs sit outside the advertised figure.

Needles. A pen needle is used for each injection and pens do not always ship with them. Some providers include them, others do not, and it is worth checking rather than assuming. A sharps bin for safe disposal is a further small cost.

The second pen. A first-order discount applies once. The figure that matters for budgeting is what you pay from your second order onwards.

Thirteen packs, not twelve. A pen covers four weekly doses, so a year of weekly treatment is 52 doses, which is thirteen packs rather than twelve. Most annual estimates published online quietly assume twelve.

Year two can cost more than year one. Where prices rise with strength, year two can cost more than year one once you settle on a maintenance dose.

Weekly Injections and What You Are Buying

Weekly weight loss injections are the standard format for this class of weight loss treatments. Both Mounjaro and Wegovy injections are taken once a week, and one pen covers four weekly doses.

That means a pen is roughly a month's supply, which is why prices are usually discussed monthly. It also means the cost is continuous rather than one-off, which is the single most important thing to understand before starting.

These prescription-only weight loss treatments require ongoing medical supervision and formal prescriptions from UK-registered healthcare professionals. Weight-management medicines may need to be continued long term when they remain clinically appropriate, with treatment reviewed regularly. Evidence shows that stopping injections typically results in weight regain, so the affordability question is not whether you can afford the first pen but whether you can afford treatment over a longer period.

The most commonly prescribed weight loss injections in the UK include semaglutide (Wegovy), a GLP-1 receptor agonist, and tirzepatide (Mounjaro), a dual GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonist. These medications mimic naturally occurring hormones to regulate appetite, reduce hunger, and support sustained weight loss when combined with calorie-controlled diets and lifestyle changes.

In clinical trials, semaglutide 2.4 mg produced average weight loss of around 15% at 68 weeks in adults without diabetes, while tirzepatide produced average weight losses of up to 22.5% at 72 weeks in SURMOUNT-1. Orlistat works differently by reducing the absorption of dietary fat. Treatment is reviewed after 12 weeks, and NICE recommends considering whether to stop if at least 5% of initial body weight has not been lost.

NHS access to weight-management medicines depends on the medicine, eligibility criteria and local service arrangements. For tirzepatide, NHS England is introducing access in phases, prioritising people with higher clinical need.

Common side effects include nausea, diarrhoea and constipation. Vomiting or diarrhoea can also lead to dehydration. These medicines have important pregnancy and contraception restrictions, which vary by product. Anyone who is pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding should discuss treatment with their prescriber. Patients should report adverse effects through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.

Private prices vary by medicine, strength and provider. In this guide, the standard prices shown are £134.99 for Wegovy and £189.99 for Mounjaro at the time of writing.

NHS prescriptions require a standard charge of £9.90 in England but may be free in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Annual private treatment costs can exceed £3,600, including medication and associated clinical services.

Understanding factors such as dosage, treatment duration, side effects, eligibility and cost can help you make a more informed decision about weight-management treatment.

The Genuinely Lower-Cost Options

If cost is the deciding factor, there are legitimate ways to reduce it that do not involve an unregulated seller.

Compare treatments, not just providers. Wegovy injection is priced below Mounjaro at standard prices, and both are licensed weekly injections with different active ingredients. Which suits you is a clinical decision, but the price difference is real. You can compare across our weight loss treatments pages.

Consider whether an injection is the right format. Oral GLP-1 treatment is taken as a daily tablet with no cold chain, which removes some associated costs. Our oral GLP-1 options pages set out what is available.

Ask about tablet treatments outside the GLP-1 class. Orlistat works differently and produces a smaller average weight loss, but it costs considerably less and suits some people.

Check NHS eligibility. Criteria are stricter than private ones and waiting times apply, but for some people it is the appropriate route.

Why a Very Low Price Is a Warning Rather Than a Bargain

Any price far below what registered pharmacies charge deserves scrutiny rather than enthusiasm.

An unusually low price should prompt you to check what is included, whether the pharmacy is properly registered, whether the medicine is licensed, and whether an appropriate clinical assessment is taking place.

The MHRA has seized thousands of illegally traded GLP-1 pens, and falsified pens have been found in circulation. Before buying anywhere, check registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council on the GPhC register rather than trusting a logo, look for a named superintendent pharmacist and a UK address, and make sure the assessment can result in treatment being declined if the medicine is not clinically appropriate. Our prescribing and dispensing policy sets out how requests here are reviewed.

What Affects Whether Treatment Is Available to You

Price is only relevant if treatment is appropriate, and that is decided by assessment rather than by purchase.

For several licensed weight-management medicines, the product criteria include a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 to below 30 with at least one weight-related comorbidity. NHS eligibility is more restrictive and depends on the medicine and service pathway. Meeting a BMI threshold does not automatically mean treatment is suitable, since medical history, other medicines and existing conditions all factor in.

An assessment is not a guarantee of supply, and treatment suitability depends on an individual clinical assessment. You can read more about Mounjaro treatment and what the assessment covers.

Questions Worth Asking Before You Buy

  • What is the standard price, not the first-order price?
  • Does that price include needles and swabs?
  • Is there a separate consultation, review or express-review fee?
  • What does delivery cost, and is cold-chain handling included?
  • If I buy a bundle, what happens if I cannot tolerate the second strength?
  • What will this cost me over twelve months at a maintenance strength?

The last one is the question almost nobody asks before starting and almost everybody asks three months in.
