A quick overview
What to know
before you start.
-
Carry pens in cabin baggage, never the hold, in the original box with your name on the pharmacy label.
-
Unopened pens stay in the fridge at 2–8°C; an in-use Mounjaro pen can be kept not above 30°C for up to 30 days.
-
Never freeze a pen. A pen that has been frozen must not be used.
-
Stomach effects can feel like travel sickness; they are most likely after starting or increasing a dose.
-
Plan repeat orders well before you leave. Your prescriber re-checks suitability each time and nothing ships automatically.
In this guide
01 · The short answer
Can you travel with weight loss injections?
Yes. Weight loss injections are ordinary prescription medicines, and the practical job is keeping the pen at a safe temperature and proving it is yours. For Mounjaro, that means the fridge range of 2–8°C for unopened pens, no freezing, and a limit of 30 days (not above 30°C) out of the fridge once a pen is in use.1
Most of the difficulty is logistics rather than medicine. Airlines, airports, countries and insurers each set their own rules. Check the airline and the destination's rules before you travel, and ask your prescriber if anything is unclear.
02 · What to decide
The decisions you are actually facing
Most travellers have to settle three questions before they leave. Each has a clear starting point.
| Question | What to do |
|---|---|
| Which pen goes with me? | Take the pen currently in use if the trip fits inside its 30-day window. Take sealed pens only if you have a way to keep them cold. |
| How do I carry it? | Cabin baggage, original box, pharmacy label showing your name, insulated bag, sharps container. |
| When do I inject? | Stay on your usual day where you can. If the day has to move, you can change it as long as at least 3 days (72 hours) have passed since your last dose. |
| What if I feel sick? | Treat it as a possible medicine effect first and follow the stomach-effects advice. If you cannot keep fluids down, contact your clinical team, as dehydration needs medical help straight away. |
| Do I need cover? | Ask your travel insurer how they want a prescribed injection and its condition declared. |
If you are not yet on treatment and are planning around a holiday, our weight loss clinic explains how the free online consultation works. Starting a new medicine immediately before a trip is something to discuss with the prescriber, because stomach effects are most likely at the start. Existing patients can order a Mounjaro pen ahead of time. Delivery is free next-day tracked in temperature-controlled packaging, with same-day dispatch when ordered by 3pm.
03 · Cabin baggage and security
Packing injections in cabin baggage
Keep your pens in your cabin baggage, not the hold, because the pen must never freeze and you need it to hand if bags are delayed or lost. Hold areas can get very cold, and a frozen pen must not be used.1 Treat this as the first rule of travelling with any injectable.
Keep the pen in its original box. The pharmacy label shows your name and the medicine, which is the simplest proof that the pen was prescribed to you. Every order from us comes with needles, a sharps bin and injection guidance, so you can see exactly what you are meant to be carrying.
A practical packing list for a trip:
- The pen in its original box, with the pharmacy label showing your name.
- An insulated medical travel bag, with a cool pack kept from touching the pen directly.
- Pen needles, plus spares in case of loss or damage.
- A small sharps container or a way to dispose of used needles safely at your destination.
- A note of your prescriber's contact details and your usual injection day.
- The patient information leaflet from the box.
At security, say that you are carrying prescription injectable medicine and show the label if asked. Airlines and airports differ in how they treat medical items, so check the airline's medical-supplies guidance before you travel. If you want a letter from your prescriber, ask in good time rather than the day before you leave.
04 · Keeping pens cool
Keeping unopened and in-use pens at the right temperature
Unopened pens should be kept cold: the product information says to keep Mounjaro pens in a fridge at 2–8°C and never freeze them.1 That affects how you pack, because the risk on a trip is not only heat. Putting a pen straight against ice or a frozen gel pack can freeze it.
Wrap the pen, or use a bag with a divider, so that it sits near the cool pack but never touches it. At a hotel or rental property, put the bag in the fridge as soon as you arrive, away from the freezer compartment and the back wall where items can freeze.
Once a pen is in use it is more forgiving. A pen can be kept out of the fridge not above 30°C for up to 30 days, which makes it well suited to short trips, after which it should be discarded.1 Keep the cap on to protect it from light. In a hot destination, not above 30°C is the point to watch: a locked car, a beach bag or a sunny window sill can exceed it quickly, so keep the pen in the shade or an insulated bag.
For unopened pens, store them in the fridge until first use; they keep until the printed expiry date. If you are unsure how an unopened pen has been handled during travel, read the patient information leaflet and ask the pharmacy before using it.13
Wegovy and other products have their own storage rules, which differ from Mounjaro's. Follow the leaflet in the box, and see our guide to Wegovy weight loss injections for how that medicine is supplied.
05 · Fitting a pen to your trip
How trip length fits with a pen
Each KwikPen contains four weekly doses, so a pen normally covers about a month of treatment.1 For a short break, you will usually travel with the pen you are already using and be well inside its in-use window.
Longer trips need more thought. Count the days since you first used the current pen. If the 30-day limit would run out partway through the trip, you will need the next pen with you, and that pen must stay cold until you start it. Your insulated bag and the fridge at your accommodation do that job, so check beforehand that the accommodation has a fridge you can use.
If you run short, contact your clinical team before you leave rather than improvising abroad. Because repeat orders re-check suitability and nothing is auto-shipped, build in extra time for the consultation review and delivery before your departure date. You can read how ordering works on our buy weight loss injections page.
06 · Injection day away
Injecting on holiday and across time zones
Mounjaro is injected under the skin once a week, on the same day each week, at any time of day, with or without food.1 That flexibility is helpful abroad, because you do not need to match a clock time exactly. If you cross time zones, keep to the same calendar day for your own routine and inject at a convenient moment.
You can change your weekly injection day if needed, as long as at least 3 days (72 hours) have passed since your last dose.1
If you miss a dose while away, take it as soon as you can within 4 days (96 hours) of the scheduled time, then carry on with your usual day. If more than 4 days have passed, skip the missed dose entirely and take the next one on your normal day — never take two doses within 3 days of each other.1
Injection sites are the stomach area (at least 5cm from the belly button), the front of the thigh, or the back of the upper arm if someone else gives the injection. Rotate the site each week.1 On a plane, a seat is cramped and the thigh may be easier than the stomach, but it is usually simpler to inject before or after the journey. Follow the pen's instructions for the actual injection technique.
07 · Travel sickness and nausea
Travel sickness, nausea and weight loss injections
Nausea is the most common side effect of Mounjaro, so it can be hard to tell it apart from travel sickness. The most common effects, affecting more than 1 in 10 people, are nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort.1 They are most likely when starting treatment or moving up a dose, and for most people they ease within days to a few weeks as the body adjusts.13
The practical consequence is about timing. If you have just started or just increased your dose, a long journey or a sea crossing may be less comfortable than usual. Ask your prescriber whether to hold your current dose longer before stepping up, because prescribers can do that if a new dose is hard to tolerate.1
Tirzepatide slows how quickly the stomach empties, which helps you feel fuller sooner.1 Large, rich or fatty meals on a travel day can feel worse as a result. Steps that help most people:
- Eat smaller meals slowly and stop at the first feeling of fullness.
- Favour plain lower-fat foods while adjusting.
- Stay well hydrated, especially on flights and in hot weather.
- Avoid lying down straight after eating.
If nausea or vomiting is persistent or you cannot keep fluids down, contact your clinical team — dehydration needs prompt attention. Be especially careful abroad, where you may not have your usual support.
Seek immediate medical help for severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting, for pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of the skin or eyes, or for swelling of the face or throat with difficulty breathing.1 Say that you take Mounjaro to any local doctor. Report any side effect through the Yellow Card scheme.19 For a wider look at risks, read are weight loss injections safe.
08 · Travel vaccines and medicines
Travel vaccines, other medicines and contraception
Tell the travel clinic or nurse that you take a weekly weight loss injection, and tell your prescriber which vaccines or preventive medicines you are being offered. That way, any timing or tolerance question is answered by someone with your full record.
Two other medicine points matter when you travel. First, Mounjaro can reduce absorption of oral contraceptives because stomach emptying slows, so ask your prescriber what protection you need, especially if you have vomiting or diarrhoea abroad.7 The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method (such as condoms), for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.1 Second, if you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion), as your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1 Disrupted meals on a travel day make that worth keeping in mind.
09 · Insurance and paperwork
Travel insurance, labels and documents
Whether you must declare a weight loss injection depends on your insurer and the policy wording, so ask them directly. Do not assume either way. Some policies ask about medicines or the conditions behind them, and a missed disclosure can cause problems with a claim. Keep any answer in writing.
For documents, carry what proves the medicine is yours: the original box, the pharmacy label with your name, and the leaflet. If you wish to carry a letter from your prescriber, request it before you leave. If you are asked at a border about the injectable, being calm and having the paperwork in one place helps most.
Countries differ on what medicines may be brought in, and what is routine in the UK may be handled differently elsewhere. Check the official guidance for your destination, and do not rely on forums. If you plan to buy more medicine overseas, be cautious: supply chains differ, and counterfeits are a real risk. We supply genuine Mounjaro KwikPens direct from Eli Lilly's UK distribution through official LillyDirect supply, and the safest course is to take enough of your own supply.
10 · Christmas and long breaks
Christmas travel, long trips and treatment breaks
Holiday periods such as Christmas add pressure on routine: bigger meals, disrupted days and busy transport. Our guide to Christmas on Mounjaro covers the eating side. For travel, the key point is to get your next order sorted early, because dispatch and delivery follow the cutoff of 3pm and we cannot ship a prescription before the prescriber has reviewed it.
If you miss doses, take the missed dose as soon as you can within 4 days (96 hours) of the scheduled time; after more than 4 days, skip it and take the next on your normal day. Speak to your clinical team about restarting. Do not decide on your own to change the dose when you restart.
Everyday support continues while you are away: our team is available Monday–Friday 9am–5pm by email at support@everydaymeds.co.uk, via the account portal chat, or by phone on 0333 207 0413. Ongoing monthly reviews, dose-titration and side-effect support are part of the service. The free GLPTrackr app can help you keep track of injection dates while travelling.
Medicines such as Saxenda are a daily injection, unlike once-weekly Mounjaro and Wegovy, so travelling with them means a daily routine and a supply to match. Other products have their own storage rules, so check the leaflet. If you are curious about different supply routes, see doctor-led weight loss injections.
11 · Before you go checklist
A simple pre-travel checklist
Work through these steps in the days before you leave, so nothing is left to chance on the day.
- Check your supply. Make sure you have enough for the whole trip plus a margin for delays, and that the next order was placed early.
- Check your pen. Note when you started the current pen and whether the 30-day in-use limit falls during the trip.
- Check your dose timing. If your injection day falls on a travel day, decide in advance whether to inject before leaving or after arriving.
- Pack cold, not frozen. Use an insulated bag, keep the pen from touching ice, and keep the cap on.
- Pack paperwork. Original box, label with your name, leaflet and prescriber contact details.
- Plan food. Pick plain, smaller meals for the travel day if you are in a dose-increase phase.
- Know when to get help. Be aware of the serious warning signs, and know where the nearest medical help is.
If you have concerns about your trip, a medicine question or a dose change, use the consultation route rather than guessing. A GPhC-registered prescriber reviews each request, and our pharmacy is registered with the GPhC, number 9012878. You can start at our register online page, and our weight loss injection FAQs answer more everyday questions.
12 · Serious side effects
Serious side effects: when to get help straight away
Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis); pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of skin/eyes (possible gallbladder problems); or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside Mounjaro, watch for low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, confusion) — your prescriber may need to adjust those medicines.1
