Can You Take Mounjaro If You've Had Your Gallbladder Removed? (October 2026)

Often, yes: having your gallbladder removed is not named as a reason to avoid Mounjaro, but a GPhC-registered prescriber must review your full history first. Prescribers take extra care if you have had gallbladder problems.1 Mounjaro also slows stomach emptying, so digestive side effects are worth planning for.

A quick overview

What to know
before you start.

  • Gallbladder removal is not listed as a bar to Mounjaro, but prescribers take extra care with gallbladder problems.
  • Always tell the prescriber about your surgery, and any ongoing digestive symptoms, during the consultation.
  • Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, so nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea may be part of your experience.
  • Upper right abdominal pain, fever or yellowing of the skin or eyes needs medical help straight away.
  • Suitability is decided individually, so a free online consultation is the practical next step.
In this guide

01 · The core answer

Can you take Mounjaro without a gallbladder?

In most cases the answer is a cautious yes, decided case by case.

That is why the consultation matters. Say that you have had your gallbladder out, roughly when, and why it was done. Mention any digestive symptoms you still have, plus any pancreas problems and your full medicine list.

02 · Your next step

What should you do next?

First, decide whether you are comfortable with possible digestive side effects. Mounjaro helps regulate appetite and slows how quickly the stomach empties.1 If your digestion already changed after surgery, you may notice this more, so raise it openly rather than hoping it will not matter.

Second, if you are ready to be assessed, you can start a free consultation for the Mounjaro pen. Every order is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, and unsuitable orders are refunded automatically. Our weight loss clinic page explains the wider treatment pathway.

03 · Digestive effects to expect

Digestive effects to expect

Tirzepatide activates the GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which helps regulate appetite and slows how quickly the stomach empties.1 For most people this means feeling fuller sooner and less hungry between meals.

Severe vomiting or diarrhoea can cause dehydration, which can strain the kidneys. Keep fluids up and get medical help straight away if you cannot keep fluids down.1 If you already have loose stools since surgery, tell the prescriber before you start, so the plan reflects your baseline.

04 · Gallbladder warning signs

Gallbladder and pancreas warning signs

Serious side effects are uncommon but need urgent attention. Seek immediate medical help for pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of the skin or eyes, which may indicate gallbladder problems.1

Severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, with or without vomiting, could be pancreatitis: stop using Mounjaro and get medical help straight away.1 You can also report any suspected side effect through the Yellow Card scheme.19

05 · Weight and surgery questions

What results can you expect?

In SURMOUNT-1, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone.2 These are trial averages and individual results vary.

Treatment works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.2

06 · Related surgery and conditions

If you want more detail, see our guides on taking Mounjaro after gallbladder removal and when your gallbladder has been removed. Other history matters too: read about pancreatitis, gastric bypass and gastric sleeve. Our Mounjaro gallbladder removed page covers supply, and next-day delivery details are there too.

How ordering works

How ordering works at EverydayMeds

Three steps, with our pharmacy team alongside you.

  1. EverydayMeds online consultation on a mobile phone

    Step 1: Online consultation — 5–10 minutes

Complete a confidential health questionnaire covering BMI, medical history and current medication. No payment is taken until you're approved.

  2. A clinician ready to review an online consultation

Step 2: Prescriber review — usually same day

A UK registered prescriber checks your suitability against the licensed criteria (BMI ≥30, or ≥27 with a weight-related condition) and contraindications, and confirms your starting dose.

  3. An EverydayMeds delivery box

    Step 3: Next-day tracked delivery

Dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy in temperature-controlled packaging with needles and a sharps bin included. Orders approved by 3pm for next-day tracked delivery.

Start your free consultation

Prescription and dispatch follow clinical approval. Confirm current delivery options when ordering.

Afterwards you're not on your own: dose-change reviews are built in before each step up, our pharmacist team is available for side-effect questions, and repeat orders re-check suitability rather than auto-shipping.

Your questions, answered

Mounjaro price UK — frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Mounjaro prices, NHS access and ongoing treatment.

Ask our pharmacy team
Can I use weight loss injections without a gallbladder?
Often yes, but it is assessed individually. Prescribers take extra care with gallbladder problems, but gallbladder removal itself is not named as a reason to avoid Mounjaro. Tell the prescriber about your surgery, current digestive symptoms and medicines during the consultation so they can decide whether treatment is suitable for you.
Who cannot take Mounjaro?
You should not take Mounjaro if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, or if you are pregnant or trying to conceive. Mounjaro must not be used during pregnancy, and it should be stopped at least one month before trying to conceive. If you become pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly. Prescribers take extra care with a history of pancreatitis, severe gut or digestive disease, diabetic retinopathy or gallbladder problems. Always share your full history and medicines.
Can I still lose weight with Mounjaro after gallbladder removal?
In SURMOUNT-1, people taking tirzepatide alongside diet and exercise lost on average 15% of their body weight on 5mg, 19.5% on 10mg and 20.9% on 15mg over 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% with lifestyle changes alone. These are trial averages and individual results vary; your prescriber can discuss realistic expectations for you.
Will Mounjaro make digestive symptoms worse after gallbladder surgery?
It may for some people, because Mounjaro slows how quickly the stomach empties. Severe vomiting or diarrhoea can also cause dehydration, so keep fluids up and get medical help straight away if you cannot keep fluids down. Tell your prescriber about any existing symptoms before starting.
Which symptoms need urgent help while on Mounjaro?
Seek immediate medical help for pain in the upper right abdomen, fever or yellowing of the skin or eyes, which may signal gallbladder problems. Severe, persistent stomach pain spreading to your back, with or without vomiting, could be pancreatitis: stop using Mounjaro and get medical help straight away. Signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face or throat and difficulty breathing, need medical help straight away.
Do I need to tell the prescriber I had my gallbladder removed?
Yes. Your full medical history is part of the free online consultation, and gallbladder history is something prescribers weigh carefully. Every order is reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, and unsuitable orders are refunded automatically, so being thorough protects you.
