No, Mounjaro should be stopped at least one month before you try to conceive, and it must not be used during pregnancy.1 Tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, so it takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear your system.1 If you become pregnant while on treatment, stop the medicine and tell your prescriber promptly. A quick overview
What to know
before you start.
-
Stop Mounjaro at least one month before you start trying to conceive; it must not be used in pregnancy.
-
Tirzepatide takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear the system, and nothing speeds this up.
-
The pill can be less well absorbed on Mounjaro, so switch to a non-oral method, or add a barrier method such as condoms, for 4 weeks after starting and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.
-
Weight loss can restore ovulation, so you can become fertile sooner than expected. Plan contraception until you choose to stop.
-
Tell your prescriber about any fertility plans, including PCOS or IVF, at your consultation.

01 · The short answer
When to stop Mounjaro before trying for a baby
Stop Mounjaro at least one month before you try to conceive.1 Because tirzepatide has a half-life of about five days, it takes roughly 4–5 weeks to clear after your final dose. There is no way to speed this up, and nothing needs doing while it clears.1
That means the practical rule is simple: stop treatment, then wait at least a month before you try to conceive, and keep using contraception until then. If you want more margin, discuss timing with your prescriber, who can look at your own circumstances.
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Thinking about a baby in the next few months | Talk to your prescriber now and agree a stop date | Ready to start trying | Have your last dose at least one month before you stop contraception |
| Think you may be pregnant on treatment | Stop Mounjaro and tell your prescriber promptly |
| Still on treatment and not trying | Keep reliable contraception in place |
02 · Planning
Weight loss first, pregnancy second
If you are exploring options, start your free consultation.
You can read more on the page about safety while trying to conceive.
03 · Contraception on Mounjaro
Contraception while you are on treatment
Mounjaro slows stomach emptying, which can reduce how well oral contraceptive pills are absorbed.1 The SmPC advises switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method such as condoms, for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.1
This applies to the pill only. Implants, coils and injections are unaffected.7 Reliable contraception matters until you have deliberately stopped treatment, because you do not want a pregnancy to start while the medicine is still in your system.
Our page on getting pregnant on Mounjaro covers this in more depth.
04 · Fertility and PCOS
Fertility, PCOS and weight loss
Mounjaro is not licensed specifically for PCOS, but many women with PCOS meet the licensed weight-management criteria. Weight loss itself is a first-line recommendation that can improve insulin resistance, cycles and symptoms. Improving weight can restore ovulation.
That is why fertility can return sooner than you expect, and why contraception remains important until you choose to conceive. Mention PCOS and any fertility plans in your consultation so your prescriber can plan around them. Our guide on why people struggle to get pregnant on Mounjaro adds context.
05 · Eligibility and NHS
Who Mounjaro is licensed for
Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.1 A prescriber assesses your BMI, medical history and current medicines first.
Mounjaro is also available on the NHS, but access is being phased in over several years. NICE recommends it for adults with a BMI of at least 35 plus at least one weight-related condition, and the primary-care rollout began in June 2025 with the highest-need groups first.4
06 · Other GLP-1 medicines
What about other GLP-1 medicines?
For any other weight-loss medicine, including GLP-1 options, do not assume the same timings apply: your prescriber can advise on the specific product. Our guide to GLP-1 medicines while trying to get pregnant and the page on weight loss medication in pregnancy explain more.
07 · Questions on IVF and egg quality
IVF, egg quality and timing
If you are planning IVF or fertility treatment, tell your fertility clinic and your prescriber that you take Mounjaro, and agree a stop date together.
The general rule still applies: stop at least one month before trying to conceive. Your clinic may ask for a longer gap based on your plan.
Our broader guide, can you get pregnant on Mounjaro, covers more of the background.
08 · After pregnancy
Breastfeeding and restarting
Current prescribing information indicates minimal transfer of tirzepatide into breast milk. Discuss breastfeeding with your prescriber so the decision reflects your circumstances.1
If you want to restart treatment afterwards, a new consultation re-checks suitability.
